The effect of external turbulence on the boundary layer flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle with a high expansion ratio has been studied numerically. The external turbulence was simulated by the turbulent viscosity e, for which we used the partial differential equation that serves to close the system of boundary layer equations [1–4]. It was found that there exists a critical value cr such that for all e< cr the flow regime in the nozzle remains perfectly laminar, whereas for ecr a laminar-turbulent transition takes place and the boundary layer in the supersonic part of the nozzle becomes turbulent. For postcritical values of e the heat fluxes and friction losses are approximately an order greater than for precritical values. With increase in the Reynolds number, determined from the parameters in the nozzle throat, the value of cr decreases; as the coordinate of the onset of boundary layer formation is displaced in the direction of flow the value of cr increases.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 34–37, January–February, 1906.The authors are grateful to L. The combined effect of the turbulence intensity , the turbulence scaleL, and the Reynolds number Re** on the surface friction coefficientc f in a turbulent boundary layer is studied. The dependence of the relative friction increment on the equivalent turbulence level cq, which takes into account the simultaneous variation in ,L and Re**, is determined. The threshold value cq * below which the value ofc f does not depend on cq is found.Moscow. Positively invariant regions for a problem in phase transitions
Positively invariant regions for the system v t + p(W) x = V xx , W t V x = W xx are constructed where p < 0, w < , w > , p(w) = 0, w , > 0. Such a choice of p is motivated by the Maxwell construction for a van der Waals fluid. The method of an analysis is a modification of earlier ideas of Chueh, Conley, & Smoller [1]. The results given here provide independent L bounds on the solution (w, v).Dedicated to Professor James Serrin on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday

We describe a system in which vortices are shed from a cylindrical free surface approximately centered in a rotating flow. Shedding is controlled by the parameter =2 g/ 2 d, where g, , d denote gravity, rotation rate and the diameter of the free surface. We find vortex shedding for >0.162 and no vortex shedding for < 0.0847. The range depends on the aspect ratio L/d, where L is the column length, in a nonmonotonic fashion. These results are independent of viscosity and surface tension for small values of these parameters. Now at Martin Marietta, Orlando Aerospace, PO Box 5837, Mail Point 150, Orlando, FL 32855, USA

This paper discusses the asymptotic behavior as 0+ of the chemical potentials associated with solutions of variational problems within the Van der Waals-Cahn-Hilliard theory of phase transitions in a fluid with free energy, per unit volume, given by 2¦¦2+ W(), where is the density. The main result is that is asymptotically equal to E/d+o(), with E the interfacial energy, per unit surface area, of the interface between phases, the (constant) sum of principal curvatures of the interface, and d the density jump across the interface. This result is in agreement with a formula conjectured by M. Gurtin and corresponds to the Gibbs-Thompson relation for surface tension, proved by G. Caginalp within the context of the phase field model of free boundaries arising from phase transitions.

In this paper we present an asymptotic analysis of the three-dimensional problem for a thin linearly elastic cantilever =×(0,l) with rectangular cross-section of sides and 2, as goes to zero. Under suitable assumptions on the given loads, we show that the three-dimensional problem converges in a variational sense to the classical one-dimensional model for extension, flexure and torsion of thin-walled beams. For a smooth, bounded domain R, n 3, and a real, positive parameter, we consider the hyperbolic equationu tt +u t u=–f(u)g in with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under certain conditions onf, this equation has a global attractorA inH 0 1 () ×L 2(). For=0, the parabolic equation also has a global attractor which can be naturally embedded into a compact setA 0 inH 0 1 () ×L 2(). If all of the equilibrium points of the parabolic equation are hyperbolic, it is shown that the setsA are lower semicontinuous at=0. Moreover, we give an estimate of the symmetric distance betweenA 0 andA .

We consider singularly perturbed systems , such that=f(, o, 0). o m , has a heteroclinic orbitu(t). We construct a bifurcation functionG(, ) such that the singular system has a heteroclinic orbit if and only ifG(, )=0 has a solution=(). We also apply this result to recover some theorems that have been proved using different approaches.

With time domain reflectometry (TDR) two dispersive parameters, the dielectric constant, , and the electrical conductivity, can be measured. Both parameters are nonlinear functions of the volume fractions in soil. Because the volume function of water ( w) can change widely in the same soil, empirical equations have been derived to describe these relations. In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed based upon the theory of dispersive behaviour. This is compared with the empirical equations. The agreement between the empirical and theoretical aproaches was highly significant: the ( w) relation of Topp et al. had a coefficient of determination r 2 = 0.996 and the (u) relation of Smith and Tice, for the unfrozen water content, u, at temperatures below 0°C, had an r 2 = 0.997. To obtain ( w) relations, calibration measurements were performed on two soils: Caledon sand and Guelph silt loam. For both soils, an r 2 = 0.983 was obtained between the theoretical model and the measured values. The correct relations are especially important at low water contents, where the interaction between water molecules and soil particles is strong.

Let (X, ) and (Y,C) be two measurable spaces withX being a linear space. A system is determined by two functionsf(X): X X and:X×YX, a (small) positive parameter and a homogeneous Markov chain {y n } in (Y,C) which describes random perturbations. States of the system, say {x n X, n=0, 1,}, are determined by the iteration relations:x n+1 =f(x n )+(x n ,Yn+1) forn0, wherex 0 =x 0 is given. Here we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutionx n as 0 andn under various assumptions on the data. General results are applied to some problems in epidemics, genetics and demographics.Supported in part by NSF Grant DMS92-06677.Supported in part by NSF Grant DMS93-12255.

On the influence of transvers-curvature and density in inhomogeneous turbulent free jets
The prediction of turbulent flows based on the k- model is extended to include the influence of transverse-curvature and density on the turbulent transport mechanisms. The empirical constants involved are adjusted such that the best agreement between predictions and experimental results is obtained. Using a transformation the boundary layer equations are solved numerically by means of a finite difference method of Hermitian type. The extended model is applied to predict the axisymmetric jet with variable density. The results of the calculations are in agreement with measurements.

The optical method presented here is based on Wollaston prism differential interferometry using a white light source. It yields high-speed, instantaneous interferograms which directly display the isochoric lines of an unsteady, two-dimensional flow. The setup used is equivalent to conventional reference beam interferometric systems, but remains differential since one of the beams — the reference one — lies inside the undisturbed upstream flow. The method was used to obtain an instantaneous, high speed display of the unsteady flow around a cylinder spanning the test section.List of symbols d Cylinder diameter - t Time - t Interval of time between two consecutive interferograms - M Mach number - Density - P Pressure - P Pressure fluctuation - Angle of the prisms making up the birefringent system - Birefringent angle = () - gl Wavelength - n 0 Ordinary index of the crystal - n e Extraordinary index of the crystal - D Diameter of the spherical mirror - R Radius of the curvature of the spherical mirror - i Fringe width - 2g prism thickness - X Distance between the two beams interfering at the level of the spherical mirror The quantities relating to upstream conditions are indexed

In this paper, based on a similarity that exists between the constitutive relations for turbulent mean flow of a Newtonian fluid and that for the laminar flow of a non-Newtonian fluid, and making use of extended thermodynamics, we develop a generalized nonlinearK- model, whose approximate form includes the standardK- model and the nonlinearK- model of Speziale (1987) as special cases. Our nonlinearK- model, which is frame indifferent, can predict relaxation of the Reynolds stress, unlike most standardK- models. Also, our model is in keeping with that of Yakhotet al. (1992). Most interestingly, the linearized form of our model bears a striking resemblance to the model due to Yoshizawa and Nisizima (1993); however, it has been obtained from a totally different perspective.

Extensional rheological properties are important in characterization and processing of polymeric liquids. The use of entrance pressure drop to obtain extensional viscosity is particularly attractive because it can be applied to both low and high viscosity liquids using the Bagley correction obtained from a conventional capillary rheometer.Low density polyethylene of three different melt index values, including IUPAC-X (a different batch of IUPAC-A), and a high density polyethylene were tested using a commercial capillary rheometer. The entrance pressure drop (P en ) was obtained with a zero-length orifice die with an abrupt contraction. The contraction ratio was 12:1. Predictions from several approximate analyses to calculate the uniaxial extensional viscosity u (using an axisymmetric contraction) from P en were compared. These comparisons are summarized in the appendices.Due to the transient nature of contraction flows, u is also a function of the strain (). This was examined by comparing u from P en (Cogswell's analysis was chosen for convenience) with transient extensional viscosity ( u +) at different magnitudes of from fiber-windup technique (Padmanabhan et al., 1996). u + at 3 was found to be close to u from P en (using Cogswell's analysis) for two LDPE samples that had fiber-windup data available. The magnitude of the strain in the contraction did not vary with strain rate.Dedicated to the memory of Tasos Papanastasiou

A two-velocity and two-temperature model is considered for a continuous medium in relation to the flow of a mixture of gas and particles in the subsonic, transsonic, and supersonic parts of a Laval nozzle. It is assumed that the particles are small, and hence that the coefficients f and q, which define the interaction with the gas, are large (these coefficients are inversely proportional to the square of the particle radius for a Stokes mode of flow). This means that the velocity or thermal lag of the particles relative to the gas is small. The solution is sought as expansions with respect to the small parameters 1=1/f and 2=1/q.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 4, pp. 89–100, July–August, 1973.

This paper is the continuation of article [7]. It gives further results about the asymptotic expression for the solution of higher order elliptic equation in the case of boundary perturbation combined with operator perturbation. When unperturbed problemA 0 is not on the spectrum, the asymptotic expression for the solution of perturbation problemA may be expanded with respect to the small parameter . WhileA 0 is on the spectrum, the asymptotic expression of the solution contains negative powers of the small parameter . The approximation of arbitrary order to the solution is considered and the recursive formula for the general term and the estimation of remainder term are given.

The advantage of our method is its straightforwardness and effectiveness, which is suitable for the above equation, where g(u) need not be restricted to an odd function of u, provided that the reduced equation, corresponding to =0, has a periodic solution. A specific example is presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of our 09 method by comparing our results with numerical ones, which are in good agreement with each other even for relatively large .

Summary Stress-strain relations for different PE melts are measured at 150 °C in an extensional rheometer under the condition of a constant extensional strain rate ( between 0,001 and 1 sec–1). Further, the recoverable (elastic) portion R of the total strain ( in Hencky's measure) is determined and additional measurements with a tensile tester for polymer melts are described. The results show clearly that in extension there is no decrease of the tensile viscosity with increasing deformation rate, in contrast to the well-known pseudoplastic behaviour in shear. Within total strains<1 the tensile behaviour can be described independently from by means of a viscoelastic material function called stressing viscosity . In this range of the relation T (t)=3 s (t) holds, where s (t) is the stressing viscosity in shear in the linear viscoelastic range. For larger tensile strains and not too small branched PB shows a remarkable increase in stress. This work-hardening behaviour is mainly a function of and almost independent from . This additional hardening seems to be due to the branches in branched PE, because linear PE does not show this effect. The discussion of the recoverable tensile strain R gives three regions of tensile rate: Below a critical there is R =0. At times shorter thant ** the equation R = is valid. Within these limits both elastic and viscous portions of the total strain= R + V exist. may correlate with the frequency of the thermally activated position changes of the molecular segments.t ** is assumed to be the time for the entanglements to act as fixed cross-links.In the appendix the influence of the interface tension between PE melt and silicone oil on the results of the tensile experiments is discussed.
