We study numerically the interaction of four initial superfluid vortex rings in the absence of any dissipation or friction. We find evidence for a cascade of Kelvin waves generated by individual vortex reconnection events which transfers energy to higher and higher wave numbers k. After the vortex reconnections occur, the energy spectrum scales as k(-1) and the curvature spectrum becomes flat. These effects highlight the importance of Kelvin waves and reconnections in the transfer of energy within a turbulent vortex tangle.  相似文献

An effective non-equilibrium temperature is defined for (locally) polarized and dense turbulent superfluid vortex bundles, related to the average energy of the excitations (Kelvin waves) of vortex lines. In the quadratic approximation of the excitation energy in terms of the wave amplitude A, a previously known scaling relation between amplitude and wavelength k of Kelvin waves in polarized bundles, namely Ak−1/2, follows from the homogeneity of the effective temperature. This result is analogous to that of the well-known equipartition result in equilibrium systems.  相似文献

A study by computer simulation is reported of the behavior of a quantized vortex line at a very low temperature when there is continuous excitation of low-frequency Kelvin waves. There is no dissipation except by phonon radiation at a very high frequency. It is shown that nonlinear coupling leads to a net flow of energy to higher wave numbers and to the development of a simple spectrum of Kelvin waves that is insensitive to the strength and frequency of the exciting drive. The results are likely to be relevant to the decay of turbulence in superfluid 4He at very low temperatures.  相似文献

We have measured the precession frequency of a vortex lattice in a Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb87 atoms. The observed mode corresponds to a collective motion in which all the vortices in the array are tilted by a small angle with respect to the z axis (the symmetry axis of the trapping potential) and synchronously rotate about this axis. This motion corresponds to excitation of a Kelvin wave along the core of each vortex and we have verified that it has the handedness expected for such helical waves, i.e., precession in the opposite sense to the rotational flow around the vortices.  相似文献

We investigate numerically the Navier-Stokes dynamics of reconnecting vortex rings at small Reynolds number for a variety of configurations. We find that reconnections are dissipative due to the smoothing of vorticity gradients at reconnection kinks and to the formation of secondary structures of stretched antiparallel vorticity which transfer kinetic energy to small scales where it is subsequently dissipated efficiently. In addition, the relaxation of the reconnection kinks excites Kelvin waves which due to strong damping are of low wave number and affect directly only large scale properties of the flow.  相似文献

It is demonstrated theoretically that the counter-rotating quadrupole mode in a vortex of Bose-Einstein condensates can decay into a pair of Kelvin modes via the Beliaev process. We calculate the spectral weight of a density-response function within the Bogoliubov framework, taking account of both Beliaev and Landau processes. Good agreement with experiment on 87 Rb by Bretin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 100403 (2003)]] allows us to unambiguously identify the decayed mode as the Kelvin wave propagating along a vortex line.  相似文献

Processes of vortex reconnection on a helical vortex, which is formed in a swirling flow in a conical diffuser, have been studied experimentally. It has been shown that reconnection can result in the formation of both an isolated vortex ring and a vortex ring linked with the main helical vortex. A number of features of vortex reconnection, including the effects of asymmetry, generation of Kelvin waves, and formation of various bridges, have been described.  相似文献

Kelvin waves (kelvons), the distortion waves on vortex lines, play a key part in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures. We present a weak-turbulence theory of kelvons. We show that nontrivial kinetics arises only beyond the local-induction approximation and is governed by three-kelvon collisions; a corresponding kinetic equation is derived. We prove the existence of Kolmogorov cascade and find its spectrum. The qualitative analysis is corroborated by numeric study of the kinetic equation. The application of the results to the theory of superfluid turbulence is discussed.  相似文献

We study interactions of planetary waves propagating across the equator with trapped Rossby or Yanai modes, and the mean flow. The equatorial waveguide with a mean current acts as a resonator and responds to planetary waves with certain wave numbers by making the trapped modes grow. Thus excited waves reach amplitudes greatly exceeding the amplitude of the incoming wave. Nonlinear saturation of the excited waves is described by an amplitude equation with one or two attracting equilibrium solutions. In the latter case spatial modulation leads to formation of characteristic defects in the wave field. The evolution of the envelopes of long trapped Rossby waves is governed by the driven complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and by the damped-driven nonlinear Schr?dinger equation for short waves. The envelopes of the Yanai waves obey a simple wave equation with cubic nonlinearity.  相似文献

Based on daily satellite-observed outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data, the tropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) associated with the Asian summer monsoon is found to be dominant during the 2005 summer. Such an ISO along with other tropical waves are identified using a wavenumber-frequency spectrum analysis. Some of Significant spectral peaks coincide well with the dispersion curves of the equatorially trapped wave modes from shallow'water theory, with various equivalent depths of 12-200 m, suggesting that actual tropical waves can be detected from observational data. Although the formation mechanism of the ISO is more complicated than those of other tropical waves with higher frequencies, significant spectral peaks that correspond to the ISO with a period of 30-60 days distinctly appear in the OLR spectra. The selective wavenumber-frequency filtering of OLR data is thus performed to isolate the ISO, Kelvin and equatoriai Rossby waves, and the properties and signatures of such tropical waves that control tropical atmospheric variability for the 2005 summer are clearly identified.  相似文献

We discuss nonlinear excitations in an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate which is trapped in a harmonic potential. We focus on axially symmetric solitary waves propagating along a cylindrical condensate. A quasi one-dimensional dark soliton is the only nonlinear mode for a condensate with weak interactions. For sufficiently strong interactions of experimental interest solitary waves are hybrids of one-dimensional dark solitons and three-dimensional vortex rings. The energy-momentum dispersion of these solitary waves exhibits characteristics similar to a mode proposed sometime ago by Lieb in a strictly 1D model, as well as some rotonlike features. We subsequently discuss interactions between solitary waves. Head-on collisions between dark solitons are elastic. Slow vortex rings collide elastically but faster ones form intermediate structures during collisions before they lose energy to the background fluid. Solitary waves and their interactions have been observed in experiments. However, some of their intriguing features still remain to be experimentally identified.  相似文献

We show that the rotation of trapped quantum mechanical particles with a repulsive interaction can lead to vortex formation, irrespective of whether the particles are bosons or (unpaired) fermions. 射频涡旋电磁波等相位面呈涡旋状,是一种携有新自由度-轨道角动量的电磁波。在轨道角动量模式理论分析的基础上,提出了在中心频率6 GHz处产生携有轨道角动量的涡旋电磁波的一种圆微带天线阵新结构,设计了以双层圆形微带天线为阵元组成的圆形阵列天线,通过控制馈源的相位差,得到模式量子数为0,1,2, 3, 4的轨道角动量。仿真结果表明:携轨道角动量的电磁波矢量电场图具有涡旋波阵面的特性,合适的阵列半径和馈线排列分布将产生携有良好轨道角动量特性的涡旋电磁波,而不当的阵列半径或馈线排列分布将出现能量的分散或者相互耦合的问题。  相似文献

A Kolmogorov-type cascade of Kelvin waves-the distortion waves on vortex lines-plays a key part in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures. We propose an efficient numeric scheme for simulating the Kelvin-wave cascade on a single vortex line. This idea is likely to be generalizable for a full-scale simulation of different regimes of superfluid turbulence. With the new scheme, we are able to unambiguously resolve the cascade spectrum exponent, and thus to settle the controversy between recent simulations of Vinen, Tsubota, and Mitani [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 135301 (2003)]] and recently developed analytic theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 035301 (2004)]].  相似文献

We propose a novel metasurface based on a combined pattern of outer C-shaped ring and inner rectangular ring. By Fourier convolution operation to generating different predesigned sequences of metasurfaces, we realize various functionalities to flexible manipulate terahertz waves including vortex terahertz beam splitting, anomalous vortex terahertz wave deflection, vortex terahertz wave splitting and deflection simultaneously. The incident terahertz wave can be flexibly controlled in a single metasurface. We predict that vortex dipoles nested in light beams trapped in graded-index media can undergo closed Berry trajectories, yielding periodic vortex annihilations and revivals along the light-propagation direction. The vortex revivals from vortex-free wave fronts are mediated by Freund stationary point bundles that carry the necessary Poincaré-Hopf indices. Vortex spiraling and spontaneous generation of circular-edge dislocations are also found to occur.  相似文献

The dispersion and excitation mechanisms and the energy distribution of guided waves in a stratified half-space are studied. All possible guided waves excited by a symmetric point source in two or three-layer medium models and their relation to the medium parameters are analyzed in detail. The excitation and propagation characteristics, as well as the energy distribution along the depth direction, of all modes of the surface waves and trapped waves are numerically investigated and analyzed thoroughly not only in the case when the shear wave velocity increases from up to down layers but also when a low-velocity layer is contained in halfspace, especially when the shear wave velocity decreases from up to down layers. It is found that there exist many guided wave modes in the case where the shear wave velocity of each layer increases from up to down layers. However, there is less than one guided wave mode in the case where the shear wave velocity of each layer decreases from up to down layers. The trapped waves exist and propagate along the low-velocity structure in the stratified half-space. It is also found that the characteristic of a mode is related to the source frequency. It is possible that a surface wave at one value of frequency is like a trapped wave at another value of frequency. Finally, the relation of the characteristics of all guided waves (surface waves and trapped waves) to the parameters of media is studied.  相似文献

Phase singularities are a ubiquitous feature of waves of all forms and represent a fundamental aspect of wave topology. An optical vortex phase singularity occurs when there is a spiral phase ramp about a point phase singularity. We report an experimental observation of an optical vortex in a field consisting of 9-keV x-ray photons. The vortex is created with an x-ray optical structure that imparts a spiral phase distribution to the incident wave field and is observed by use of diffraction about a wire to create a division-of-wave-front interferometer.  相似文献
