Modern societies face the challenge that the time scale of opinion formation is continuously accelerating in contrast to the time scale of political decision making. With the latter remaining of the order of the election cycle we examine here the case that the political state of a society is determined by the continuously evolving values of the electorate. Given this assumption we show that the time lags inherent in the election cycle will inevitable lead to political instabilities for advanced democracies characterized both by an accelerating pace of opinion dynamics and by high sensibilities (political correctness) to deviations from mainstream values. Our result is based on the observation that dynamical systems become generically unstable whenever time delays become comparable to the time it takes to adapt to the steady state. The time needed to recover from external shocks grows in addition dramatically close to the transition. Our estimates for the order of magnitude of the involved time scales indicate that socio-political instabilities may develop once the aggregate time scale for the evolution of the political values of the electorate falls below 7–15 months. 相似文献

We study models of strongly correlated electrons in one-and two dimensions. We exactly diagonalize small clusters with general boundary conditions (BC) and integrate over all possible BC. This technique recovers the kinetic energy part of the (extended lattice) Hamiltonianexactly in a grand-canonical formulation. A continuous range of particle densities may be described with this technique and the momentum space can be probed for arbitrary momenta. For the Hubbard Hamiltonian we recover details of the Mott-insulating behaviour for the momentum distribution function at half filling, both in 1D and 2D. Off half-filling the shape of thecanonical Fermi surface is strongly distorted in 2D with respect to thegrand canonical Fermi surface. The consequences for cosmology of the phase transition in which SU(2)×U(1) symmetry is broken in the Weinberg-Salam model are discussed. The qualitative arguments concerning the effect of the phase transition on the baryon-to-entropy ratio that were recently posed by Witten for the case of a Coleman-Weinberg light Higgs boson are confirmed through exact numerical computations, but some quantitative disagreement is found. The computations are extended to the case in which the light Higgs boson is not of the Coleman-Weinberg type and the nature of the phase transition is discussed. Donor-acceptor dienes known as Zincke aldehydes, which derive readily from the ring-opening reactions of pyridinium salts with secondary amines, undergo a fascinating thermal rearrangement reaction to afford Z-alpha,beta,gamma,delta-unsaturated amides with excellent stereoselectivity. Efficient, stereocontrolled access to Z-trisubstituted alkenes with two different substitution patterns is possible in three steps beginning with the appropriately substituted pyridine derivative. Preliminary studies have shown that both the amide and the monosubstituted alkene termini can be selectively functionalized. Despite advances in methods and instrumentation for analysis of phosphopeptides using mass spectrometry, it is still difficult to quantify the extent of phosphorylation of a substrate because of physiochemical differences between unphosphorylated and phosphorylated peptides. Here we report experiments to investigate those differences using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for a set of synthetic peptides by creating calibration curves of known input ratios of peptides/phosphopeptides and analyzing their resulting signal intensity ratios. These calibration curves reveal subtleties in sequence-dependent differences for relative desorption/ionization efficiencies that cannot be seen from single-point calibrations. We found that the behaviors were reproducible with a variability of 5-10% for observed phosphopeptide signal. Although these data allow us to begin addressing the issues related to modeling these properties and predicting relative signal strengths for other peptide sequences, it is clear that this behavior is highly complex and needs to be further explored. 相似文献
