The bit error rate (BER) performance of an optical soliton communication system is analyzed. Based on the jitter variance equation and the chi-square distribution for the amplified spontaneous emission noise, an analytic expression for the BER calculation is obtained. We have investigated the effects of Gordon-Haus jitter, which is due to the random phase shift of the soliton individual central wavelength induced by the amplified spontaneous emission noise of the amplifiers. Very good agreement has been obtained between our theory and the reported experimental results.  相似文献

We present a closed form expression to analyse the error performance of a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) digital modulation format in an optical soliton communication system. In the analysis we include the effect of Gordon-Haus jitter, which is mainly due to the amplified spontaneous emission noise of the amplifiers. Gordon-Haus jitter is found to be less significant when the bit period is 15 times greater than the jitter variance and becomes more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 20 dB. Due to a good bit error rate (BER) performance (BER ≈ 10−20at SNR= 21 dB), the DPSK modulation format has a potential application for a high-bit-rate and low-noise soliton communication system.  相似文献

In this paper, the performance evaluation of path-averaged soliton transmission link for various performance measures viz. OSNR, optical power, extinction ratio, bit error rate (BER) and Q factor at different levels of noise figure and values of pulse width (FWHM) has been carried out. The performance of soliton transmission link is studied, taking into account soliton interaction, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and noise figure. The model presented considers interaction in a random sequence of solitons and the effect of the ASE noise added in each amplification stage. The influence of ASE noise, noise figure and pulse width with different amplifier spacing on the BER and quality factor has been investigated. It has been shown that these play dominant roles in degrading the performance measures. We have demonstrated the capability of path-averaged (guiding-centre) soliton for a long-haul distance of 17,000 km at a bit rate of 10 Gbps without ASE effect and noise figure in each amplifier span length of 500 km. The average value of quality factor is found to be 16.6 dB and the average BER is of the order of 10−12 over the transmission distance of 17,000 km. Further, it has been investigated that a severe system penalty results on the inclusion of ASE effect and noise figure in order to achieve the same level of performance. Thus, the investigations ascertain that in order to maintain the same level of BER and Q factor, the amplifier spacing and total transmission distance reduce considerably.  相似文献

We have studied the timing jitter in dispersion-managed soliton systems with a Gaussian pulse by two methods. Firstly, the timing jitter expressions for dispersion-managed soliton are derived by use of the perturbed variational method. By analyzing and simulating the timing jitter expressions, one can find that the timing jitter is induced by the amplifier spontaneous emission noise, the frequency shift, etc. The chirp sign, the soliton self-frequency shift, and the filters action also have effects on the timing jitter. Secondly, the timing jitter is calculated and analyzed by the moment method. The results of the two methods are proved to be consistent.  相似文献

研究色散控制光孤子系统中的放大器的自发辐射噪声与交叉相位调制对孤子传输特性的影响,采用变分法分析了色散控制孤子的均方频移、定时抖动和误码特性,从降低自发辐射噪声和交叉相位调制扰动引起的均方频移出发,确定了补偿段的特性参量,给出了三种传输控制方案,分析了各方案中色散控制孤子的传输特性,其结果对色散控制孤子系统的设计具有参考价值。  相似文献

We investigate the chirp selection of externally modulated RZ soliton pulse at 10 Gb/s for fiber optical communication systems for the reduction in timing jitter. We have chosen single arm Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator with sin2 electrical shaped input-output (P-V) characteristic and its chirp range has been varied in the range of −5 to 5. The timing jitter, Q factor and bit error rate (BER) generated for the chirp range has been studied for various fiber lengths and post compensation has been demonstrated to reduce the timing jitter. The number of fixed output amplifiers after every 60 km span is varied from 2 to 10 and corresponding accumulated ASE noise has been studied to manage timing jitter and BER in permissible range, i.e. 5 ps and 10−9, respectively. It is observed that when two fiber spans are taken then the compensating fiber length for the system is less than 20 km for each case of the chirp considered. For 10 fiber spans, the compensating fiber length increases in the range 60-90 km depending upon the value of chirp taken. Finally it is shown that the chirp value of external modulator should be set to either 0 or −1 for externally modulated RZ soliton pulse in 10 Gb/s optical communication system which makes the system more insensitive to the timing jitter and the selection of dispersion compensating fiber length.  相似文献

差分相移键控(DPSK)调制方式和色散管理孤子传输方式的结合能抵制噪声和非线性损伤,在高速(40 Gbit/s以上)多信道系统中具有突出的优点。采用变分法分析了多波长信道的放大自发辐射(ASE)噪声、信号间的非线性串扰(ISI)等多种扰动因素引起差分相移键控色散管理孤子系统的均方根相位抖动,给出了扰动的作用区域以及各扰动的大小。研究发现,放大自发辐射引起的抖动与传输距离成三次方的关系,而交叉相位调制(XPM)引起的抖动与距离近似成线性关系。通过优化选择色散管理图强度范围1.5~3.5,各种扰动得到了抑制,而以放大自发辐射扰动抑制为最大,此时要远低于交叉相位调制引起的抖动,然后分别是交叉相位调制-放大自发辐射扰动和交叉相位调制,从而波分复用系统主要来自于增加信道数这一客观限制。  相似文献

The intrinsic evolution of a high-order soliton described by the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation is initiated by a self-four-wave mixing effect (or modulational instability) and recurs neatly every soliton period. We show that when there is noise such as amplified spontaneous emission, however, a high-order soliton evolves randomly and independently and is distorted because the evolution is initiated by noise. Thus the time and the frequency coherence of a soliton pulse train are both greatly degraded.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate an SOA (semiconductor optical amplifier) preamplifier structure by optimizing the carrier lifetime in order to reduce the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and crosstalk, with adequate gain increase. This proposed SOA optical preamplifier has no need of optical alignment and antireflection coating. This structure of SOA eliminates the need of optical filter, and exhibits large tolerance to the input light wavelength. The receiver sensitivity is investigated for single and multi channel transmission links. The received power of − 50.34 dBm is observed at bit error rate (BER) 10− 12 for 10 Gb/s with PIN receiver. Further, the impact of gain, amplified spontaneous emission power and gain variation for different carrier lifetime with input power for OOK system is illustrated. The proposed SOA has constant gain of 30.06 dB up to gain saturation for carrier lifetime 0.18 ns. It is predicted that low value of carrier lifetime suffers less from ASE noise.  相似文献

This paper reported an investigation of remotely pumped double pass L-band amplifier with dispersion compensation technique. The proposed design used chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) to reflect the amplified signal back into the active medium, compensate the effect of fiber dispersion and block the recycled forward amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and the residual 1480 nm pump power. The characterization of the design was done experimentally. The gain is 37.5 dB and noise figure is 4 dB with best BER of 10−52 is achieved when the EDF is placed 150 km away from the transmitter and 48 km before the receiver terminal.  相似文献

This paper presents the comparative investigation and suitability of various data formats for optical soliton transmission links at 10 Gb/s for different chirps (−0.7 to 0.7). Here the investigations focused on data formats: NRZ, RZ soliton, RZ raised cosine and RZ super Gaussian. The comparative results and suitability of data formats is based on various performance measures such as Q-factor, eye opening, BER and jitter. It has been indicated that RZ super Gaussian yields the highest value of Q (34.08 dB), good eye opening and lowest BER.  相似文献

We investigated the root mean square (RMS) timing jitter and RMS intensity noise of the wavelength tunable femtosecond soliton pulses using the technique of radio-frequency spectrum analysis. We obtained interesting results that the generated solitons have almost constant RMS timing jitter and RMS intensity noise of approximately 410 fs and 0.03% in the wavelength region of 1600-1750 nm. It is therefore believed that the magnitudes of the jitter and noise are not greatly increased in the process of wavelength tunable soliton pulse generation. The wavelength tunable soliton pulse is confirmed to be stable and useful for practical applications.  相似文献

In this paper, we have targeted our investigations to the inclusion in performance evaluation of light path on the effect of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise accumulated in nonlinear optical propagation. Quality of light-path transmission feasibility has been reported by using a global performance metrics, called Q-factor, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), BER, extinction ratio and nonlinear frequency shift, which takes into account the interaction between the parameters aforementioned and returns a unique value corresponding to the performance metrics.  相似文献

In this paper, the timing jitter in dispersion-managed soliton-like systems with the Gaussian pulse is studied by using two methods. Firstly, the derivation of the dynamic equations for the evolution of soliton-like parameters and the timing jitter expressions for the dispersion-managed soliton-like systems are carried out by the perturbed variational method. By analysing and simulating these timing jitter expressions, one can find that the timing jitter is induced by the amplified spontaneous emission noise and the frequency shift, etc. Nonlinear gain can suppress the timing jitter. The chirp sign and the filters action have also effects on the total timing jitter. Secondly, the timing jitter is calculated and analysed by using the moment method. In this article, the effect of four-wave mixing (FWM) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise on WDM optical star networks has been investigated. Analysis for the evaluation of probability of error has been carried out (a) when only FWM is present and (b) when both FWM and ASE noise are present. Numerical results are presented in the graphical and tabular forms for the practical values of parameters. Finally, optimal location of the amplifier in the network has been identified as being before the star coupler preceding the receiver.  相似文献

The variational method is employed to describe the basic properties of soliton parameters and to evaluate the timing jitter by considering multi-perturbations in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) dispersion-managed soliton (DMS) system. We investigate the phase jitter in long-haul optical transmission systems with periodic dispersion management and amplification. We compare different dispersion-managed soliton systems and a conventional soliton system having the same pulse width and path-averaged dispersion. Using the variational method, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the pulse parameters perturbed by amplifier noise and hence calculate the phase jitter. We verify the analytical results by numerically solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation using split-step Fourier algorithm. The results suggest that the reduction of nonlinear phase noise in dispersion-managed soliton systems is possible compared to a conventional soliton system. It is also revealed that the phase noise is enhanced in stronger dispersion-managed systems. We also explore the phase noise effect in dispersion-managed quasi-linear systems and find that phase jitter is mitigated in highly dispersive fibers.  相似文献
