Measurements on the inverse filtered airflow waveform (the "glottal waveform") and of estimated average transglottal pressure and glottal airflow were made from noninvasive recordings of productions of syllable sequences in soft, normal, and loud voice for 25 male and 20 female speakers. Statistical analyses showed that with change from normal to loud voice, both males and females produced loud voice with increased pressure, accompanied by increased ac flow and increased maximum airflow declination rate. With change from normal voice, soft voice was produced with decreased pressure, ac flow and maximum airflow declination rate, and increased dc and average flow. Within the loudness conditions, there was no significant male-female difference in air pressure. Several glottal waveform parameters separated males and females in normal and loud voice. The data indicate higher ac flow and higher maximum airflow declination rate for males. In soft voice, the male and female glottal waveforms were more alike, and there was no significant difference in maximum airflow declination rate. The dc flow did not differ significantly between males and females. Possible relevance to biomechanical differences and differences in voice source characteristics between males and females and across loudness conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Correlation analyses indicated that several of the airflow measurements were more directly related to voice intensity than to fundamental frequency (F0). Results suggested that pressure may have different influences in low and high pitch in this speech task. It is suggested that unexpected results of increased pressure in low pitch were related to maintaining voice quality, that is, avoiding vocal fry. In high pitch, the increased pressure may serve to maintain vocal fold vibration. The findings suggested different underlying laryngeal mechanisms and vocal adjustments for increasing and decreasing F0 from normal pitch.  相似文献

Comparison is drawn between male and female larynges on the basis of overall size, vocal fold membranous length, elastic properties of tissue, and prephonatory glottal shape. Two scale factors are proposed that are useful for explaining differences in fundamental frequency, sound power, mean airflow, and glottal efficiency. Fundamental frequency is scaled primarily according to the membranous length of the vocal folds (scale factor of 1.6), whereas mean airflow, sound power, glottal efficiency, and amplitude of vibration include another scale factor (1.2) that relates to overall larynx size. Some explanations are given for observed sex differences in glottographic waveforms. In particular, the simulated (computer-modeled) vocal fold contact area is used to infer male-female differences in the shape of the glottis. The female glottis appears to converge more linearly (from bottom to top) than the male glottis, primarily because of medial surface bulging of the male vocal folds.  相似文献

Coarticulation studies in speech of deaf individuals have so far focused on intrasyllabic patterning of various consonant-vowel sequences. In this study, both inter- and intrasyllabic patterning were examined in disyllables /symbol see text #CVC/ and the effects of phonetic context, speaking rate, and segment type were explored. Systematic observation of F2 and durational measurements in disyllables minimally contrasting in vocalic ([i], [u,][a]) and in consonant ([b], [d]) context, respectively, was made at selected locations in the disyllable, in order to relate inferences about articulatory adjustments with their temporal coordinates. Results indicated that intervocalic coarticulation across hearing and deaf speakers varied as a function of the phonetic composition of disyllables (b_b or d_d). The deaf speakers showed reduced intervocalic coarticulation for bilabial but not for alveolar disyllables compared to the hearing speakers. Furthermore, they showed less marked consonant influences on the schwa and stressed vowel of disyllables compared to the hearing controls. Rate effects were minimal and did not alter the coarticulatory patterns observed across hearing status. The above findings modify the conclusions drawn from previous studies and suggest that the speech of deaf and hearing speakers is guided by different gestural organization.  相似文献

This study investigates long-term features and utterance contours of fundamental frequency (f0) derived from the German Alcohol Language Corpus. The corpus comprises read, spontaneous, and command&control speech uttered by 148 speakers of both genders and various age groups when sober and intoxicated. f0 median, f0 range, and f0 contours are analyzed for intoxication and interactions with gender and age. Contours are compared both directly (root mean squared error, statistical correlation, or the Euclidean distance in the spectral space of the contour) and by parameterization of the contour using discrete cosine transform and the first and second moment of the lower contour spectrum. Results partly confirm earlier findings, i.e., f0 average and range are mostly raised with intoxication, and also suggest that the majority of speakers do not follow a general trend, but show idiosyncratic alterations to f0. f0 contours differ significantly with intoxication, but a more detailed analysis could not assign these changes to specific general form changes like decline or curvature. The results suggest that it is not possible to predict intoxication from f0 in a single model across different speakers. Instead a speaker-dependent model to account for the individual speaker behavior is proposed.  相似文献

Speech duration characteristics of phrase-level utterances produced by 26 severely and profoundly hearing-impaired adults were examined acoustically using relative timing measures. The measures were then compared to the same utterances produced by 13 normal-hearing adults. Although absolute speech durations of the hearing-impaired subjects were significantly longer than their normal-hearing counterparts, relative timing did not differ between groups. Findings are discussed in relation to the biological constraint hypothesis associated with speech timing, as well as the role of auditory feedback in models of speech production.  相似文献

A new numerical model of the vocal folds is presented based on the well-known two-mass models of the vocal folds. The two-mass model is coupled to a model of glottal airflow based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Glottal waves are produced using different initial glottal gaps and different subglottal pressures. Fundamental frequency, glottal peak flow, and closed phase of the glottal waves have been compared with values known from the literature. The phonation threshold pressure was determined for different initial glottal gaps. The phonation threshold pressure obtained using the flow model with Navier-Stokes equations corresponds better to values determined in normal phonation than the phonation threshold pressure obtained using the flow model based on the Bernoulli equation. Using the Navier-Stokes equations, an increase of the subglottal pressure causes the fundamental frequency and the glottal peak flow to increase, whereas the fundamental frequency in the Bernoulli-based model does not change with increasing pressure.  相似文献

This study investigates cross-speaker differences in the factors that predict voicing thresholds during abduction-adduction gestures in six normal women. Measures of baseline airflow, pulse amplitude, subglottal pressure, and fundamental frequency were made at voicing offset and onset during intervocalic /h/, produced in varying vowel environments and at different loudness levels, and subjected to relational analyses to determine which factors were most strongly related to the timing of voicing cessation or initiation. The data indicate that (a) all speakers showed differences between voicing offsets and onsets, but the degree of this effect varied across speakers; (b) loudness and vowel environment have speaker-specific effects on the likelihood of devoicing during /h/; and (c) baseline flow measures significantly predicted times of voicing offset and onset in all participants, but other variables contributing to voice timing differed across speakers. Overall, the results suggest that individual speakers have unique methods of achieving phonatory goals during running speech. These data contribute to the literature on individual differences in laryngeal function, and serve as a means of evaluating how well laryngeal models can reproduce the range of voicing behavior used by speakers during running speech tasks.  相似文献

The current study investigated the ability of subjects to perceive source characteristics (the gender of a human walker) of a naturally occurring auditory event (human walking). A number of acoustic properties were measured and subjected to statistical analyses in order to identify those properties that differentiate male and female walking footsteps. A principal component analysis on the statistical properties of the spectral energy distributions then identified two classes of information that were important in determining subject perception of the gender of a walker: (1) the spectral peak which integrates the information about the spectral central tendency of frequency and shape of the spectral peak; and (2) the contribution of high-frequency spectral components. A follow-up experiment then manipulated these spectral properties to verify their contributions in the perceptual classification of walker gender. Additionally, the effect of shoe on the gender judgement in walking sequences was assessed by having both male and female walkers wear male's shoes.  相似文献

During the breeding season, the underwater vocalizations and calling rates of adult male leopard seals are highly stereotyped. In contrast, sub-adult males have more variable acoustic behavior. Although adult males produce only five stereotyped broadcast calls as part of their long-range underwater breeding displays the sub-adults have a greater repertoire including the adult-like broadcast calls, as well as variants of these. Whether this extended repertoire has a social function is unknown due to the paucity of behavioral data for this species. The broadcast calls of the sub-adults are less stereotyped in their acoustic characteristics and they have a more variable calling rate. These age-related differences have major implications for geographic variation studies, where the acoustic behavior of different populations are compared, as well as for acoustic surveying studies, where numbers of calls are used to indicate numbers of individuals present. Sampling regimes which unknowingly include recordings from sub-adult animals will artificially exaggerate differences between populations and numbers of calling animals. The acoustic behavior of sub-adult and adult male leopard seals were significantly different and although this study does not show evidence that these differences reflect vocal learning in the male leopard seal it does suggest that contextual learning may be present.  相似文献

Overtone singing is where one person sings in two voices, the first voice represented by the fundamental and the second by an enhanced harmonic. Overtone singing is performed in chest register. Tuning of the first or second formant and a reduction of the formant bandwidth down to 20 Hz make harmonics prominent. Narrowing the pharynx, velar constriction, variation of the small mouth opening, and a tension of the walls of the mouth cavity are used. Changing prominent harmonics has the effect of creating an overtone melody with sustained tones, tone steps, and trillos.  相似文献

This paper explores the development of thin panels that can be controlled electronically so as to provide surfaces with desired reflection coefficients. Such panels can be used as either perfect reflectors or absorbers. They can also be designed to be transmission blockers that block the propagation of sound. The development of the control system is based on the use of wave separation algorithms that separate incident sound from reflected sound. In order to obtain a desired reflection coefficient, the reflected sound is controlled to appropriate levels. The incident sound is used as an acoustic reference for feedforward control and has the important property of being isolated from the action of the control system speaker. In order to use a panel as a transmission blocker, the acoustic pressure behind the panel is driven to zero. The use of the incident signal as a reference again plays a key role in successfully reducing broadband transmission of sound. The panels themselves are constructed using poster board and small rare-earth actuators. Detailed experimental results are presented showing the efficacy of the algorithms in achieving real-time control of reflection or transmission. The panels are able to effectively block transmission of broadband sound. Practical applications for these panels include enclosures for noisy machinery, noise-absorbing wallpaper, the development of sound walls, and the development of noise-blocking glass windows.  相似文献

The present study explored significant differences between male-to-female transgendered speakers perceived as male and those perceived as female in terms of speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) and its variability, vowel formants for /a/ and /i/, and intonation measures. Fifteen individuals who identified themselves as male-to-female transsexuals served as speaker subjects, in addition to 6 biological female control subjects and 3 biological male control subjects. Each subject was recorded reading the Rainbow Passage and producing the isolated vowels /a/ and /i/. Twenty undergraduate psychology students served as listeners. Results indicated that subjects perceived as female had a higher mean SFF and higher upper limit of SFF than subjects perceived as male. A significant correlation between upper limit of SFF and ratings of femininity was achieved.  相似文献

Background  

To study how event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and underlying cortical mechanisms of selective attention change from childhood to old age, we investigated lifespan age differences in ERPs during an auditory oddball task in four age groups including 24 younger children (9–10 years), 28 older children (11–12 years), 31 younger adults (18–25), and 28 older adults (63–74 years). In the Unattend condition, participants were asked to simply listen to the tones. In the Attend condition, participants were asked to count the deviant stimuli. Five primary ERP components (N1, P2, N2, P3 and N3) were extracted for deviant stimuli under Attend conditions for lifespan comparison. Furthermore, Mismatch Negativity (MMN) and Late Discriminative Negativity (LDN) were computed as difference waves between deviant and standard tones, whereas Early and Late Processing Negativity (EPN and LPN) were calculated as difference waves between tones processed under Attend and Unattend conditions. These four secondary ERP-derived measures were taken as indicators for change detection (MMN and LDN) and selective attention (EPN and LPN), respectively. To examine lifespan age differences, the derived difference-wave components for attended (MMN and LDN) and deviant (EPN and LPN) stimuli were specifically compared across the four age groups.  相似文献

The prerequisites to formation and the characteristics of a jet that occurs at the open end of a waveguide guiding an intense sound wave are studied. The velocity field is measured by a hot-wire anemometer. The previously developed method of separating the jet velocity Vjet from the amplitude of the oscillating particle velocity Vosc, which is applicable only when Vjet>Vosc, is supplemented with the method of oscillogram processing applicable for VjetVosc. Thus, a full picture of the jet evolution in space, starting from the waveguide outlet, is obtained. The experimentally determined spatial distribution of the jet velocity is found to agree well with the numerically simulated dependences reported by other authors. For the oscillating velocity amplitude at the open end of the waveguide, a threshold value, beyond which the formation of the acoustic jet takes place, is revealed. The frequency dependence of this threshold value is determined. The dependence of the maximal jet velocity on the oscillating velocity amplitude in the outlet waveguide cross section is found to be close to linear.  相似文献

In this letter,the cosmic distance-duality relation has been constrained with a model-independent method by combining the baryon acoustic oscillation(BAO)data and the type Ia supernova(SNe Ia)data.The results show that this relation is consistent with the observational data in the 68.27%error range,except for the instance of Union 2.1 plus BAO with the statistic errors only,where the relation is consistent with the observations in the 95.45%error range.To study the result of the uncertainty of the Hubble constant on the investigation of this relation,we treat the dimensionless Hubble constant h as a free parameter and get that the observational data favors the relation in the 68.27%error range.And then h has been marginalized and the results support that this relation is favored by the observations in the 68.27%error range too.  相似文献
