Abstract:General expressions describing field profile, dispersion relation and propagation power are presented for the nonlinear transverse electric (TE) waves of a periodic refractive index structure with a nonlinear cladding. The formation of the saturation state is analyzed. The dependence of the effective refractive index on the propagation power is studied. The optical bistability between the propagation power in the guide core and that in the total structure is investigated. The field profiles versus the effective refractive index are illustrated. The effects of the structural parameters on the mode optical nonlinearity and bistability as well as the mode field profiles are discussed.
