On the concept of point value in the infinite-dimensional realization theory

In this article, we study the effect of the chosen representation of a point value (and point evaluation) on the class of periodic signals realizable using a certain type of infinite-dimensional linear system. By suitably representing the point evaluation at the origin in a Hilbert space, we are able to give a complete characterization of its extensions. These extensions involve a new concept called δ-sequence, the use of which as an observation operator of an infinite-dimensional linear system is studied in this article. In particular, we consider their use in the realization of periodic signals. We also investigate how the use of δ-sequences affects the convergence properties of such realizations; we consider the rate and character of convergence and the removal of the Gibbs phenomenon. As still a further demonstration of the significance of the chosen concept of a point value, we discuss the use of distributional point values in the realization of periodic distributions. The possible applications of this work lie in regulator problems of infinite-dimensional control theory, as is indicated by the well-known internal model principle.     

A two-dimensional matrix Padé-type approximation in the inner product space

By introducing a bivariate matrix-valued linear functional on the scalar polynomial space, a general two-dimensional (2-D) matrix Padé-type approximant (BMPTA) in the inner product space is defined in this paper. The coefficients of its denominator polynomials are determined by taking the direct inner product of matrices. The remainder formula is developed and an algorithm for the numerator polynomials is presented when the generating polynomials are given in advance. By means of the Hankel-like coefficient matrix, a determinantal expression of BMPTA is presented. Moreover, to avoid the computation of the determinants, two efficient recursive algorithms are proposed. At the end the method of BMPTA is applied to partial realization problems of 2-D linear systems.     

A non-standard auxiliary integrating sphere and correction method for the realization of diffuse reflectance

To realize spectral diffuse reflectance scale in 0/d geometric condition at National Institute of Metrology in China (NIM), a facility based on a non-standard auxiliary integrating sphere method with special structure has been built up and a correction method for the influence on the thickness of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating at the port of auxiliary integrating sphere is mainly discussed. The uncertainty of spectral diffuse reflectance in NIM is approximately 0.25% (k = 2) in 380–800 nm. This facility has been used to establish China diffuse reflectance scales in the VIS–NIR part of the spectrum. This system and correction method presented in this paper can be easily implemented on most commercial spectrophotometers with a lower cost.     

State space calculations for discrete probability densities

State space methods have proved to be powerful theoretical and computational tools in a number of areas of applications, in particular filtering and control theory. In this paper we advocate the use of state space methods for the study of discrete probability densities on the set {0,1,2,…}. The fundamental approach is to consider the class of all discrete probability densities that can be represented as the impulse response/convolution kernel of a finite dimensional discrete time state space system. We show that all standard operations such as the calculation of moments, convolution, scaling, translation, product, etc. can be carried out using system representations.

On the notion of persistence of excitation for linear switched systems

The paper formulates the concept of persistence of excitation for discrete-time linear switched systems, and provides sufficient conditions for an input signal to be persistently exciting. Persistence of excitation is formulated as a property of the input signal, and it is not tied to any specific identification algorithm. The results of the paper rely on realization theory and on the notion of Markov-parameters for linear switched systems.     

A modal provability logic of explicit and implicit proofs

We establish the bi-modal forgetful projection of the Logic of Proofs and Formal Provability GLA. That is to say, we present a normal bi-modal provability logic with modalities □ and whose theorems are precisely those formulas for which the implicit provability assertions represented by the modality can be realized by explicit proof terms.     

Rigid realizations of graphs on small grids

A framework (G,p) is a straight line realization of a graph G=(V,E) in , given by a map . We prove that if (G,p) is an infinitesimally rigid framework then there is an infinitesimally rigid framework (G,q) for which the points q(v), vV(G), are distinct points of the k×k grid, where . We also show that such a framework on G can be constructed in O(|V|³) time.
