Ac behaviour and phase transition in PLZT 6/80/20 ferroelectric ceramics

The Ac behaviour of PLZT 6/80/20 ferroelectric ceramics was analyzed around and above the phase transition. Two relaxation processes are identified, showing that the so-called ‘universal relaxation law’ holds for the ceramics. A critical point in the values of the Ac conductivity, around the temperature corresponding to the maximum of the dielectric losses, is observed below the transition temperature due to the relaxor behaviour. The frequency dependence of the Ac conductivity at various temperatures and the hysteresis loops show classical relaxor behaviour with a diffuse phase transition.     

Creating, detecting and locating ultracold molecules in a surface trap

Ultracold molecules have been produced by photoassociation of Cs atoms trapped in a mirror magneto-optical trap. The molecules were detected by resonantly enhanced multi-photon ionization followed by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The time-of-flight ofatomic and molecular ions was investigated in the presence of a dc bias voltageapplied to the conducting mirror. This technique provides a new tool for determining the distance between the cold molecules and the mirror surface. Material tensor parameters of LiNbO3 relevant for electro- and elasto-optics

The complete set of self-consistent parameters of nominally undoped LiNbO₃ crystals of congruent composition that describe the electro-optic, piezoelectric, elasto-optic, elastic, and dielectric response has been determined by numerically evaluating available measurements. The parameters were determined at room temperature and consist of the low-frequency clamped dielectric constants ε^S _ij, elastic stiffness constants at constant electric field C^E _ijkl, piezoelectric stress coefficients e_ijk, elasto-optic constants at constant electric field p^E _ijkl, and clamped electro-optic coefficients r^S _ijk. It is shown that the complete set is required for calculating the effective electro-optic coefficients and dielectric constants in photorefractive applications of LiNbO₃. Sagnac Effect in the Kerr-Newman and Reissner-Nordstrom Fields

By means of a formal analogy with the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the Sagnac time delay and the corresponding Sagnac phase shift in the Kerr-Newman and Reissner-Nordstrfm spacetimes are discussed. We find that the effect depends on the properties of the source of the gravitational field. The contributions made by the electric charge of the gravitational source can be employed to weaken it in the Kerr-Newman spacetime, even if a phase shift and a time delay still appear. This is due to the properties of the rotating source of the gravitational field.     

Spectroscopy of the regenerative soot

The mechanisms and processes of the formation of the regenerative soot in a graphite hollow cathode discharge that produces and emits carbon clusters are presented. Mass spectrometry with a specially designed E×B velocity filter analyzes the entire range of the charged clusters from C ₁ to ∼C ₄₃₀₀. The state of the carbon vapour within the source is evaluated by using the characteristic line emissions from the carbonaceous discharge whose formative mechanisms depend upon the kinetic and potential sputtering of the sooted cathode. The carbonaceous discharge generates atomic and ionic C and its clusters C _m (m≥ 2), noble gas metastable atoms and ions, energetic electrons and photons in the cavity of the graphite hollow cathode. The parameters of soot formation and its recycling depend critically on the discharge parameters, the geometry of the hollow cathode and 3D profile of the cusp magnetic field contours. Electrical properties of high Curie temperature (1−x)Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-xPbTiO3 single crystals grown by the solution Bridgman technique

0.65Pb(In_1/2Nb_1/2)O₃-0.35PbTiO₃ (PINT65/35) (starting composition) single crystals were grown successfully through the solution Bridgman technique using PbO flux and PMNT67/33 seed crystals. Because of the composition variation, the final composition of achievable crystals is in a range of 0.32-0.34 with the corresponding T_c range of 265-269 °C. The (001) plates of as-grown PINT66/34 single crystals show high Curie temperature (T_c=269 °C) and rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transition temperature (T_rt=134 °C). Besides, good electrical properties with high dielectric constant (ε>3000), low dielectric loss (tan δ∼1.2%), high piezoelectric constant (d₃₃∼2000 pC/N) and large electromechanical coupling factor (k_t≈59%) at room temperature have been obtained on the (001) plates. The sound velocity, acoustic impedance and other piezoelectric parameters were also measured on the (001) plates in this study, which provide us more detailed information about PINT66/34 single crystals.     

Dependence of high electric-field-induced strain on the composition and orientation of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 crystals

Electric-field-induced strain behavior of (1−x)Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O₃-xPbTiO₃ (PMNT) crystals with different orientations and compositions was investigated for use as electromechanical actuators. Crystallographically, high strains with low hysteresis were achieved for 〈001〉 oriented rhombohedral crystals (29%≤x≤31%) near a morphotropic phase boundary, rather than 〈110〉 and 〈111〉. Domain instability could explain inferior strain levels and large hysteresis for 〈110〉 and 〈111〉 oriented crystals. Ultrahigh strain levels up to 1.8% could be achieved for 〈001〉 oriented PMNT crystals, being related to an E-field induced phase transition. −2 kV/cm negative E-field can be applied to PMNT ferroelectric material with low hysteresis. High strain with low hysteresis makes PMNT crystals promising candidates for high performance solid-state actuators.     

Dependence of excess bismuth content in precursor sols on ferroelectric and dielectric properties of Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 thin films fabricated by chemical solution deposition

Bi_3.25La_0.75Ti₃O₁₂ (BLT) thin films were fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO₂/Si(1 0 0) substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD), and the dependence of ferroelectric and dielectric properties of the as-deposited BLT thin films on excess Bi content in precursor sols was studied. It is found that the prepared BLT thin film shows the best polarization-electric field, capacitance-voltage and dielectric constant (?_r)-frequency characteristics, when the value of excess Bi content in precursor sols is 10%. In detail, its remnant polarization (2P_r) value is 40 μC/cm², the capacitance tunability is 21% measured at room temperature under conditions of an applied voltage of 8 V and measurement frequency of 10 kHz, and the ?_r is 696 at 100 kHz frequency.
