Fatigue life enhancement by irradiation of 12Cr1MoV steel with a Zr<Superscript>+</Superscript> ion beam. Mesoscale deformation and fracture

The structure and properties of 12Cr1MoV steel irradiated with a zirconium ion beam were studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and micro- and nanoindentation. It is shown that the modification covers the entire cross-section of the irradiated specimens to a depth of 1 mm. The data on irradiation-induced structural changes are used to interpret the changes in mechanical properties of the irradiated specimens under static and cyclic loading. Particular attention is given to analysis of strain estimation by the digital image correlation method.

Instability of a Collision Surface During High-Velocity Impact

The physical mechanisms of development of hydrodynamic instability during high-velocity impact are analyzed analytically and using numerical simulation. A new mechanism of development of instability based on the assumption of the existence of initial perturbations on the surfaces of the colliding plates is proposed. The progressive displacement of the maximum of the specific surface mixed mass from the shortwave to the longwave spectrum range and the self-similarity of the variation of the interface are established.     

Flow in rotating radial channels at small Rossby and Ekman numbers

The problem of flow of a viscous fluid in a rotating channel is considered in the region of very small Rossby and Ekman numbers and moderately large Reynolds numbers. Asymptotic expressions with respect to the Ekman number are found for the velocity components and the longitudinal pressure gradient by solving a system of linear differential equations using Fourier series. The stability limits of such flow are predicted. Attention is drawn to a similarity between the velocity profiles of these flows and flows of a magnetic fluid and a fluid executing longitudinal oscillations in a fixed channel.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 11–15, January–February, 1984.
