We consider diffraction by a semi-infinite crack located alonga fusion interface between two differing elastic media. Twotypes of crack, namely open and partially closed cracks, areinvestigated. An open crack is modelled by a stress-free contactboundary condition and a partially closed crack is modelledby a spring contact boundary condition. For the latter, thejump in the stress across the crack is assumed to be proportionalto the jump in the displacement across the crack. This situationarises in, for example, a K-weld where the fine grain of theparent material (for example, ferritic or forged austeniticsteel) is in stark contrast with the coarse-grained weld metal(for example, austenitic weld metal). In the metal weld thedirection of the grain axis varies through the metal. However,diffraction is a local phenomenon and so the austenitic steelis assumed to have a zonal axis so that it may be modelled bya transversely isotropic composite. The ferritic or forged austeniticsteel will be modelled as an isotropic material.  相似文献

Compliance and enforcement in fisheries are important issues from an economic point of view since management measures are useless without a certain level of enforcement. These conclusions come from the well‐established theoretical literature on compliance and enforcement problems within fisheries and a common result is that, it is efficient to set fines as high as possible and monitoring as low as possible, when fines are costless and offenders are risk neutral. However, this result is sensitive to the assumption that fishermen cannot engage in avoidance activities, e.g., activities to reduce the likelihood of being detected when noncomplying. The paper presents a model of fisheries that allows the fishermen to engage in avoidance activities. The conclusions from the model are that, under certain circumstances, fines are costly transfers to society since they not only have a direct positive effect on the level of deterrence, but also an indirect negative effect in the form of increased avoidance activities to reduce the probability of detection. The paper contributes to the literature on avoidance activities by introducing the externality from the illegal behavior as an endogenous effect on other offenders. For an externality, that has an exogenous effect on other actors, Malik shows that fines are only costly transfers for conditional deterrence (when one actor is deterred while another actor is not). For fisheries, we show that fines are also costly transfers under no deterrence (when no agents are deterred).  相似文献

Dual, independently addressable thin-film resistive heaters fabricated in a multilayer geometry on the surface of an optical fiber provide a new, flexible means for thermally tuning the properties of intracore gratings. In particular, control of the current that is applied to each of these heaters permits the chirp and the central wavelength of the grating to be adjusted independently. The designs and simple fabrication procedures for these types of device, the important physics of heat flow in them, and a tunable add-drop filter that demonstrates essential aspects of their operation are described.  相似文献

We report the structures of two new strontium germanium nitrides synthesized as crystals from the elements in sealed Nb tubes at 750 degrees C using liquid Na as a growth medium. Sr(3)Ge(2)N(2) is isostructural with the previously reported Ba analogue. It crystallizes in P2(1)/m (No. 11), with a = 9.032(2) ?, b = 3.883(1) ?, c = 9.648(2) ? and beta = 112.42(3) degrees, and has two formula units per unit cell. It contains GeN(2)(4)(-) units and additionally |Ge(2)(-) zigzag chains. Sr(2)GeN(2) crystallizes in P4(2)/mbc (No. 135) with a= b = 11.773(2) ? and c= 5.409(1) ? and has Z = 8. It also contains GeN(2)(4)(-) units which have 18 valence electrons and, consequently are bent, like the isoelectronic molecule SO(2).  相似文献

The idea that some systems could have a thermodynamically large number of accessible ground states was presaged in the work of Pauling on ice (Pauling, Cornell University Press, Ithaca, NY, 1945) [1]. With the advent of spin glasses, the methodology for describing ground states changed dramatically, and in particular it was realized that the observed slow dynamics were due to relaxation among a large number of nearly degenerate ground states. Now the accepted wisdom is that both “frustration”, as well as structural disorder, is responsible for spin glass behavior. However, well before spin-glasses were identified as a distinct class of systems, it had been appreciated that even for structurally periodic systems, bond frustration could lead to a thermodynamically large number of states. There is now a well-defined class of magnets which display effects of macroscopic ground state degeneracy. This class of geometrically frustrated magnets presents some new paradigms with which to view condensed matter systems – marginal underconstraint and downward shift of spectral weight. We discuss possible realizations of these phenomena in both in spin ice and also outside the context of local-moment magnetism.  相似文献

We measured zirconium tungstate's elastic constants C(ij). This compound shows relatively soft, nearly isotropic elastic constants with normal Poisson ratios and no approach to Born instability. ZrW2O8 shows normal ambient-temperature elastic constants C(ij), but remarkable dC(ij)/dT that show dominant low-frequency acoustic-vibration modes. From the bulk modulus, we estimated the total ambient-temperature thermodynamic Grüneisen parameter as gamma = -1.2. The dB/dT slope gives a Grüneisen parameter gamma = -7. The 300-0 K bulk-modulus increase (40%) seems unprecedented and breaks Birch's law of corresponding states.  相似文献

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) in cubic ZrW2O8 has generated much interest due to its large, isotropic, and temperature independent behavior. Here, x-ray absorption fine structure data are presented for various atom pairs, providing evidence that the low-energy modes causing NTE correspond to the correlated vibrations of a WO4 tetrahedron and its three nearest ZrO6 octahedra. This involves translations of the WO4 as a rigid unit along each of the four <111> axes. The interconnectivity of these modes prevents an anisotropic soft mode from developing, a new geometrical phenomenon that we call the "frustrated soft mode."  相似文献
