Tautomeric Equilibrium in Polyfluoroalkylated 5,6,7,8-Tetrahydrofurans by IR Spectroscopy

The tautomeric equilibrium in substituted 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinazolines was studied by IR spectroscopy. The effect of various substitutents in the pyrimidine ring and the solvent on the state of the tautomeric equilibrium was evaluated.

Formation and Decomposition of the Methylplatinum(IV) Complex in the Mechanically Activated K2PtCl4 Powder–MeI Vapor System

Mechanical treatment of the K₂PtCl₄ solid salt in a vibrating mill results in Pt–Cl bond heterolysis to form coordinatively unsaturated Pt(II) complexes. At room temperature, the freshly treated K₂PtCl₄ salt absorbs methyl bromide and evolves methyl chloride to the gas phase. The reaction mechanism involves the following sequence of steps: the oxidative addition of methyl iodide to Pt(II) with the intermediate formation of Pt(IV) methyl complexes and the decomposition of the latter due to intramolecular reductive elimination with methyl chloride formation. The first step of the reaction of MeI with the preactivated surface of the K₂PtCl₄ salt is assisted by active sites, which are regenerated in each act of the chemical transformation of MeI into MeCl involving in the chain substitution of halogen in methyl iodide. The coordinatively unsaturated surface platinum complexes can act as such active sites. Due to their effective positive charge, they can provide electrophilic assistance to nucleophilic substitution. Chain termination is probably due to the coordination of the complex with a coordination vacancy and an interstitial chloride ion to the inactive K₂PtCl₄ complex.     

Time-projection chamber for the PEN experiment

The PEN collaboration carries out a precision measurement of the ??⁺ ?? e ⁺?? decay branching ratio at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland). A special mini time-projection chamber (mTPC) has been developed for registration of particles in the pion beam. The chamber contains 14 × 10^?3 g/cm² of matter on the particle path. The chamber was successfully used during one-year-long run. Design and characteristics of the mTPC are described.     

Direct experimental limit on neutron-mirror-neutron oscillations

In case a mirror world with a copy of our ordinary particle spectrum would exist, the neutron n and its degenerate partner, the mirror neutron n', could potentially mix and undergo nn' oscillations. The interaction of an ordinary magnetic field with the ordinary neutron would lift the degeneracy between the mirror partners, diminish the n' amplitude in the n wave function and, thus, suppress its observability. We report an experimental comparison of ultracold neutron storage in a trap with and without superimposed magnetic field. No influence of the magnetic field is found and, assuming negligible mirror magnetic fields, a limit on the oscillation time taunn' > 103 s (95% C.L.) is derived.
