Many studies over the past 30 years have highlighted the important role of students’ beliefs for successful problem-solving in mathematics. Given the recent emphasis afforded to problem-solving on the reformed Irish secondary school mathematics curriculum, the main aim of this study was to identify Irish students’ (n = 975) beliefs about the field. A quantitative measure of these beliefs was attained through the use of the Indiana Mathematical Belief Scale, an existing 30-item (five-scale) self-report questionnaire. A statistical analysis of the data revealed that students who were further through their secondary education had a stronger belief that not all problems could be solved by applying routine procedures. In contrast, the same students held less positive beliefs than their younger counterparts that they could solve time-consuming problems and that conceptual understanding was important. The analysis also indicated that gender had a significant impact on three of the five belief scales.  相似文献

Covalently tethering photosensitizers to catalytically active 1T-MoS2 surfaces holds great promise for the solar-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report the preparation of two new RuII-complex-functionalized MoS2 hybrids [RuII(bpy)2(phen)]-MoS2 and [RuII(bpy)2(py)Cl]-MoS2. The influence of covalent functionalization of chemically exfoliated 1T-MoS2 with coordinating ligands and RuII complexes on the HER activity and photo-electrochemical performance of this dye-sensitized system was studied systematically. We find that the photo-electrochemical performance of this RuII-complex-sensitized MoS2 system is highly dependent on the surface extent of photosensitizers and the catalytic activity of functionalized MoS2. The latter was strongly affected by the number and the kind of functional groups. Our results underline the tunability of the photovoltage generation in this dye-sensitized MoS2 system by manipulation of the surface functionalities, which provides a practical guidance for smart design of future dye-sensitized MoS2 hydrogen production devices towards improved the photofuel conversion efficiency.  相似文献

Alkyl 2‐cyanoacrylates (CAs) are primarily used as instant adhesives, including those sold under the Loctite brand. The adhesive action can be inhibited with acid stabilizers allowing radical polymerization to be employed. The following article details the first attempted controlled/living radical polymerization of alkyl CAs: Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization mediated by a poly(methyl methacrylate) dithiobenzoate macroRAFT agent for three different CA monomers (ethyl 2‐cyanoacrylate, n‐butyl 2‐cyanoacrylate, and 2‐phenylethyl cyanoacrylate) allowed the preparation of the first block copolymers of this challenging but commercially important monomer class. A natural and synthetic layered silicate (LS) was modified with trihexyltetradecyl‐phosphonium tetrafluoroborate (an ionic liquid) via a cationic exchange reacation. The exchange reaction and loading of modifier was investigated using a combination of WAXD, inductively coupled plasma‐optical emmission spectroscopy (ICP‐OES) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal stability of the modified LS was enhanced by up to 150 °C, when compared with conventional quaternary ammonium cations, making melt mixing of such modified nanoclays possible with poly(ethylene‐terephthalate) (PET).

In this paper we formulate a model for foreign exchange exposure management and (international) cash management taking into consideration random fluctuations of exchange rates. A vector error correction model (VECM) is used to predict the random behaviour of the forward as well as spot rates connecting dollar and sterling. A two-stage stochastic programming (TWOSP) decision model is formulated using these random parameter values. This model computes currency hedging strategies, which provide rolling decisions of how much forward contracts should be bought and how much should be liquidated.The model decisions are investigated through ex post simulation and backtesting in which value at risk (VaR) for alternative decisions are computed. The investigation (a) shows that there is a considerable improvement to “spot only” strategy, (b) provides insight into how these decisions are made and (c) also validates the performance of this model.  相似文献

LP models are usually constructed using index sets and data tables which are closely related to the attributes and relations of relational database (RDB) systems. We extend the syntax of MPL, an existing LP modelling language, in order to connect it to a given RDB system. This approach reuses existing modelling and database software, provides a rich modelling environment and achieves model and data independence. This integrated software enables Mathematical Programming to be widely used as a decision support tool by unlocking the data residing in corporate databases.  相似文献

We address the problem of finding the worst possible traffic a user of a telecommunications network can send. We take worst to mean having the highest effective bandwidth, a concept that arises in the Large Deviation theory of queueing networks. The traffic is assumed to be stationary and to satisfy leaky bucket constraints, which represent the a priori knowledge the network operator has concerning the traffic. Firstly, we show that this optimization problem may be reduced to an optimization over periodic traffic sources. Then, using convexity methods, we show that the realizations of a worst case source must have the following properties: at each instant the transmission rate must be either zero, the peak rate, or the leaky bucket rate; it may only be the latter when the leaky bucket is empty or full; each burst of activity must either start with the leaky bucket empty or end with it full.  相似文献
