An analysis of managerialism and performance in English and Welsh male prisons

This paper fills a noticeable gap in the current economic and penology literature by proposing new performance-enhancing policies based on an efficiency analysis of a sample of male prisons in England and Wales over the period 2009/10. In addition, we advance the empirical literature by integrating the managerialism of four strategic functions of prisons, employment and accommodation, capacity utilization, quality of life in prison and the rehabilitation and re-offending of prisoners. We find that by estimating multiple models focussing on these different areas some prisons are more efficient than other establishments. In terms of policy, it is therefore necessary to consider not just an overall performance metric for individual prisons, as currently undertaken annually by the UK Ministry of Justice, but to look into the administration and managerialism of their main functions in both a business and public policy perspective. Indeed, it is further necessary to view prisons together and not as single entities, so as to obtain a best practice frontier for the different operations that management undertakes in English and Welsh prisons.     

Arene‐Free Ruthenium(II/IV)‐Catalyzed Bifurcated Arylation for Oxidative C−H/C−H Functionalizations

Experimental and computational studies provide detailed insight into the selectivity‐ and reactivity‐controlling factors in bifurcated ruthenium‐catalyzed direct C?H arylations and dehydrogenative C?H/C?H functionalizations. Thorough investigations revealed the importance of arene‐ligand‐free complexes for the formation of biscyclometalated intermediates within a ruthenium(II/IV/II) mechanistic manifold.     

Representations for the extreme zeros of orthogonal polynomials

We establish some representations for the smallest and largest zeros of orthogonal polynomials in terms of the parameters in the three-terms recurrence relation. As a corollary we obtain representations for the endpoints of the true interval of orthogonality. Implications of these results for the decay parameter of a birth-death process (with killing) are displayed.     

Reconfigurable Logic Devices on a Single Dopant Atom—Operation up to a Full Adder by Using Electrical Spectroscopy

A silicon field‐effect transistor is operated as a logic circuit by electrically addressing the ground and excited electronic states of an embedded single dopant atom. Experimental results—complemented by analytical and computational calculations—are presented. First, we show how a complete set of binary logic gates can be realized on the same hardware. Then, we show that these gates can be operated in parallel on the very same dopant up to the logic level of a full adder. To use the device not as a switch but as a full logic circuit, we make essential use of the excited electronic states of the dopant and of the ability to shift their energy by gating. The experimental ability to use two channels to measure the current flowing through the device and the conductance (dI/dV) allows for a robust reading of the output of the logic operations.     

Equicontinuity and convergence of measures

It is shown in this paper that each family of measures with values in an abelian topological group which is equicontinuous on a ring is equicontinuous on the generated -ring. A family of measures is equicontinuous iff the corresponding family of semivariations is equicontinuous. It is furthermore shown that a family of measures which is equicontinuous and Cauchy convergent on a ring is Cauchy convergent on the generated -ring. A family of measures which is Cauchy convergent for all countable sums of elements of a ring is Cauchy convergent on the generated -ring.     

Diels-Alder-Reaktionen von Vinylindolen mit Arin und 1,4-Benzochinonen: Neue potentielle DNA-Interkalatoren

Summary Diels-Alder reactions of 2- and 3-vinylindoles with aryne, 1,4-benzo- and 1,4-naphtho-quinone lead to new six-ring annellated carbazoles. Molecular modeling studies predict that the compounds with coplanar framework are able to intercalate with the B-DNA.
