Thermal decompositions of dialkyl peroxides studied by DSC

Studies on the thermal decompositions of diamyl peroxide (DAPO), dicumyl peroxide (DCPO), and tert-butyl cumyl peroxide (TBCP) were conducted by DSC. Heat of decomposition, exothermic onset point, and chemical kinetics were determined and compared to those data of di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), a model compound for studying thermokinetics of organic peroxide and standardization of a calorimeter. Similarities and differences of decomposition mechanisms between these organic peroxides were proposed and verified. Kinetics on decomposition of uni-molecular reaction via these similar alkoxyl radials accompanying β C–C bond scission were discussed and compared to the results from ab initio calculations. The ranking of thermal stability on dialkyl peroxides is determined to be in the following sequence: DCPO < TBCP < DAPO < DTBP. This rate-determining step in thermal decomposition of dialkyl peroxides possessed an average eigenvalue of log A at about 13.1 ± 1.2. Activation energy on the thermal decomposition of these peroxides was calculated to be 139.5 ± 14.4 kJ mol^?1.

A graph $G$ is $(k,k^{\prime })$-choosable if the following holds: For any list assignment $L$ which assigns to each vertex $v$ a set $L\left(v\right)$ of $k$ real numbers, and assigns to each edge $e$ a set $L\left(e\right)$ of $k^{\prime }$ real numbers, there is a total weighting $?:V\left(G\right)\cup E\left(G\right)\to R$ such that $?\left(z\right)\in L\left(z\right)$ for $z\in V\cup E$, and ${\sum }_{e\in E\left(u\right)}?\left(e\right)+?\left(u\right)\ne {\sum }_{e\in E\left(v\right)}?\left(e\right)+?\left(v\right)$ for every edge $uv$. This paper proves that if $G$ is a connected graph of maximum degree $\Delta \ge 2$, then $G$ is $(1,\Delta +1)$-choosable.     

Thermal instabilities of organic carbonates with discharged cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries

Thermal instability of lithiated cathode materials with organic carbonate were investigated using DSC. Lithium transition metal oxides of LiFePO₄, LiMn₂O₄, and LiCoO₂ were mixed with diethyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, ethylene carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate, and propylene carbonate then dynamically screened to about 500 °C. Curves were acquired and analyzed to determine exothermic onset temperatures and reaction enthalpies. These data for assessing the thermal hazards of lithium-ion batteries under discharged conditions were compared to those data published in the literature.

Resolution of Secondary α-Ketoalcohols Catalyzed by Lipase and Inversion of Stereochemistry

Several α-ketoalcohols of synthetic value were resolved using lipase as a catalyst. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) provided the best rate of hydrolysis and kinetic differentiation. One of these optically pure α-ketoalcohol was converted to (5)-ibuprofen in good optical purity. The stereospecific inversion of (R)-alcohol to (S)-alcohol is described.     

Novel determination of the dimerization mechanism for thermal polymerization of α-methylstyrene

This study discussed the phenomena on thermal polymerization of α-methylstyrene (AMS). A curve scanned by temperature-programmed technique was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Heat of polymerization (ΔH) and onset temperature of exothermic (T₀) behavior were determined to be 280±10 J g^-1 and about 138±1°C, respectively. A dimer formation mechanism was proposed for initiation of the propagating chain. Spectroscopic identification of dimer structure was conducted by infrared (IR) spectroscopy in the wavenumber from 650 to 1100 cm^-1associated with molecular fingerprint characteristics. The mechanism of thermal polymerization on α-methylstyrene proposed in this study was similar to that of styrene suggested by Mayo.     

Cytotoxic Constituents from the Stem Bark of Zanthoxylum Pistaciiflorum

Two new esters, methyl 4‐(prenyloxy)dihydrocinnamate and methyl 4‐(geranyloxy)dihydrocinnamate, together with fourteen known compounds have been isolated from the stem bark of Zanthoxylum pistaciiflorum. The structures of two new compounds were determined through spectral analyses. Among the isolates, four compounds exhibited effective cytotoxicities against P‐388 and HT‐29 cell lines in vitro.     

Prenylbicyclogermacrane diterpenoids from the formosan soft coral Nephthea elongata

Seven new prenylbicyclogermacrane diterpenoids, pacificins K--Q (1--7), were isolated from the methylene chloride solubles of the Formosan soft coral Nephthea elongata. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cells was measured in vitro.
