Direct Oxidation of Primary tert-Butyldimethylsilyl Ethers to Carboxylic Acids with Jones Reagent

Treatment of the tert-butyldimethylsilyl ethers 1a-f with Jones reagent gave the carboxylic acids 2a-f in excellent yield in the absence of potassium fluoride.     

Energy expenditure in cyclo-loading processes

A theoretical analysis of the energy expenditure in cyclo-loading vs. quasi-static processes is presented. The analysis refers to processes of a tool-soil interaction, such as implement penetration, cutting, crushing, shovelling etc. The analysis reaches a conclusion stating that no unilateral preference statement can be drawn, thus justifying the experimental results available. It is shown that the existence of an optimal cyclo-loading regime, challenging the quasi-static regime, strongly depends on the character of the loading-unloading curves defining the tool-soil system under consideration. A simple criterion providing an immediate answer to the question of the cyclic vs. quasi-static process preference is derived. The energy expenditure per unit displacement function is thoroughly investigated.

π1-classification of real arrangements with up to eight lines

One of the open questions in the geometry of line arrangements is to what extent does the incidence lattice of an arrangement determine its fundamental group. Line arrangements of up to 6 lines were recently classified by K.M. Fan (Michigan Math. J. 44(2) (1997) 283), and it turns out that the incidence lattice of such arrangements determines the projective fundamental group. We use actions on the set of wiring diagrams, introduced in (Garber et al. (J. Knot Theory Ramf.), to classify real arrangements of up to 8 lines. In particular, we show that the incidence lattice of such arrangements determines both the affine and the projective fundamental groups.

Crystallization of the two-domain N-terminal fragment of the archaeal ribosomal protein L10(P0) in complex with a specific fragment of 23S rRNA

Lateral L12-stalk (P1-stalk in Archaea, P1/P2-stalk in eukaryotes) is an obligatory morphological element of large ribosomal subunits in all organisms studied. This stalk is composed of the complex of ribosomal proteins L10(P0) and L12(P1) and interacts with 23S rRNA through the protein L10(P0). L12(P1)-stalk is involved in the formation of GTPase center of the ribosome and plays an important role in the ribosome interaction with translation factors. High mobility of this stalk puts obstacles in determination of its structure within the intact ribosome. Crystals of a two-domain N-terminal fragment of ribosomal protein L10(P0) from the archaeon Methanococcus jannaschii in complex with a specific fragment of rRNA from the same organism have been obtained. The crystals diffract X-rays at 3.2 Å resolution.     

On the structure of symmetry generators

In a field theoretic framework we investigate generators of symmetry transformations induced by conserved local, not necessarily translationally covariant currents. Assuming the invariance of the vacuum and a mass gap, it is shown that the generator on one-particle states in general can be any polynomial of the generators of the Poincaré group and the internal symmetries. We give an example showing that the generator, defined as an integral over a conserved current, in spite of leaving the vacuum invariant, need not be self-adjoint.Supported by a DAAD grant     

Spins of the levels and multipole mixing ratios of transitions in 125Sb determined from γ-γ directional correlation and polarization-directional correlation measurements

In order to resolve several discrepancies in spin assignments to levels in ¹²⁵Sb, directional correlations and polarization-directional correlations have been measured for several γ-γ cascades in ¹²⁵Sb populated from the decay of ¹²⁵Sn. Earlier results obtained from using NaI and Ge(Li) and NaI detectors were difficult to interpret due to the complex structure of the decay scheme. To improve the experimental situation, we have used two coaxial Ge(Li) detectors for the angular correlation measurements and a coaxial Ge(Li)-planar Ge(Li) combination for the polarization-directional correlations. Combination of the results of these measurements give unique spin assignments of $\text{11}\text{2}$^?, $\text{11}\text{2}$^?, $\text{9}\text{2}$⁺, $\text{11}\text{2}$⁺ and $\text{9}\text{2}$⁺ to the 1982 keV, 1890 keV, 1420 keV, 1089 keV and 1067 keV levels, respectively. The determined E2/M1 mixing ratios are : δ(470) = 0.010±0.027, δ(1067) = ?0.86±0.18, and δ(916) = ?0.02±0.01.
