Dynamics of water in real space and time

Owing to marked advances in instrumentation in X-ray and neutron scattering the time-dependent pair correlation function, the Van Hove function, can now be determined by inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering measurements. The local dynamics of water in real space and time is visualised by this approach. We discuss how the dynamic properties, such as viscosity and diffusion, can be elucidated through the Van Hove function of water.

Dual Catalysis with Copper and Rhenium for Trifluoromethylation of Propargylic Alcohols: Efficient Synthesis of α‐Trifluoromethylated Enones

Trifluoromethylation of propargylic alcohols to provide (Z)‐α‐trifluoromethylated enones and β‐unsubstituted α‐trifluoromethylated enones proceeded with high yield and selectivity in the presence of CuI/Re₂O₇. The Z isomer was formed under kinetic control, though it is less stable than the E isomer in terms of steric repulsion.     

Polyion complex stabilized palladium nanoparticles for Suzuki and Heck reaction in water

Palladium nanoparticles stabilized by a polyion complex composed of poly{4-chloromethylstyrene-co-(4-vinylbenzyl) tributylammonium chloride} and poly(acrylic acid) were easily recovered by filtration after pH treatment. The polyion complex stabilized palladium nanoparticles have high catalytic activity for the Suzuki and Heck reactions in water.     

Optical Storage Media with Dye-Doped Minute Spheres on Polymer Films

We have fabricated a new optical storage media using minute spheres arranged on a surface relief grating (SRG). Using minute spheres as recording bits, we can limit recordable regions by sphere size, and can realize high resolution reproduction in the plane direction. Surface relief structures were made on a polymer thin film on which we performed diffusion arrangement and adsorptive fixation of minute spheres. The stability of the arranged spheres was confirmed for heating and washing. Furthermore, we used a dipping method for a more simple arrangement of minute spheres on a large area of the substrate and made a monolayer sample of the spheres. We were able to realize a highly sensitive reconstruction of the medium using a confocal optical system as a record and readout system.     

Elastic heterogeneity in metallic glasses

When a stress is applied on a metallic glass it deforms following Hook's law. Therefore it may appear obvious that a metallic glass deforms elastically. Using x-ray diffraction and anisotropic pair-density function analysis we show that only about 3/4 in volume fraction of metallic glasses deforms elastically, whereas the rest of the volume is anelastic and in the experimental time scale deform without resistance. We suggest that this anelastic portion represents residual liquidity in the glassy state. Many theories, such as the free-volume theory, assume the density of defects in the glassy state to be of the order of 1%, but this result shows that it is as much as a quarter.
