In this paper, we intend to establish relations between the way efficiency is measured in the literature on efficiency analysis and the notion of distance in topology. To this effect, we are interested particularly in the Hölder norm concept, providing a duality result based upon the profit function. Along this line, we prove that the Luenberger shortage function and the directional distance function of Chambers, Chung, and Färe appear as special cases of some l p distance (also called Hölder distance), under the assumption that the production set is convex. Under a weaker assumption (convexity of the input correspondence), we derive a duality result based on the cost function, providing several examples in which the functional form of the production set is specified.  相似文献

This note generalizes analytical relationships among activity variables of Dataenvelopment analysis models previously derived in a previous article by theauthors of this note. We relax the assumption of constant returns to scale byshowing that the key results hold under a weaker assumption of homogeneity. Weuse the notion of α-returns to scale to extend the analysis tostrictly increasing and decreasing returns, covering now the whole range ofreturns to scale for multi-output homogenous technologies.  相似文献

This contribution compares existing and newly developed techniques for geometrically representing mean–variance–skewness portfolio frontiers based on the rather widely adapted methodology of polynomial goal programming (PGP) on the one hand and the more recent approach based on the shortage function on the other hand. Moreover, we explain the working of these different methodologies in detail and provide graphical illustrations in relation to the goal programming literature in operations research. Inspired by these illustrations, we prove two new results: a formal relation between both approaches and a generalization of the well-known one fund separation theorem from traditional mean–variance portfolio theory.  相似文献

The subject of this paper is to study the problem of the minimum distance to the complement of a convex set. Nirenberg has stated a duality theorem treating the minimum norm problem for a convex set. We state a duality result which presents some analogy with the Nirenberg theorem, and we apply this result to polyhedral convex sets. First, we assume that the polyhedral set is expressed as the intersection of some finite collection of m given half-spaces. We show that a global solution is determined by solving m convex programs. If the polyhedral set is expressed as the convex hull of a given finite set of extreme points, we show that a global minimum for a polyhedral norm is obtained by solving a finite number of linear programs.  相似文献

In a recent article, Briec, Kerstens and Vanden Eeckaut (2004) develop a series of nonparametric, deterministic non-convex technologies integrating traditional returns to scale assumptions into the non-convex FDH model. They show, among other things, how the traditional technical input efficiency measure can be analytically derived for these technology specifications. In this paper, we develop a similar approach to calculate output and graph measures of technical efficiency and indicate the general advantage of such solution strategy via enumeration. Furthermore, several analytical formulas are established and some algorithms are proposed relating the three measurement orientations to one another.  相似文献

This contribution introduces the so-called quasi-Leontief functions. In the framework and the language of tropical algebras, our quasi-Leontief functions are the additive functions defined on a semimodule with values in the semiring of scalars. This class of functions encompasses as a special case the usual Leontief utility function. We establish the existence of efficient Nash equilibria when the strategy spaces are compact and pathconnected topological semilattices.  相似文献

The concept of efficiency in groups postulates that a coalition of firms has to record a smaller distance toward the aggregate technology frontier compared with the sum of individual distances. Efficiency analysis (either allocative or technical) is defined with respect to cooperative firm game in order to provide operational distance functions, the so-called pseudo-distance functions. These pseudo-distances belong to the core interior of the allocative firm game, in other terms, any given firm coalition may always improve its allocative efficiency. We prove that such a result is impossible for technical efficiency, i.e., the technical efficiency cannot increase for all possible coalitions.  相似文献

This contribution proposes a specification of strictly increasing and decreasing returns to scale in multi-output technologies. Along this line a notion of α-returns to scale is derived from that of homogeneous multi-output technology. For a large class of technologies we establish necessary and sufficient conditions characterizing strictly increasing and strictly decreasing returns to scale to scale. Furthermore, a relationship between input, output and graph distance functions is established. These connections lead naturally to a link between the various Malmquist indexes and the Chavas–Cox productivity index. Finally, we show that these concepts can be implemented in a DEA context using a piecewise homogeneous constant elasticity substitution–transformation model due to [Färe, R., Grosskopf, S., Njinkeu, D., 1988b.
