An optical method to assess electromechanical coupling in ferroelectric ceramics

A new technique is described, which allows the assessment of elastic and inelastic regions around a macroscopic defect in ferroelectric-ferroelastic ceramics. The accuracy and robustness of the method are demonstrated on a PZT plate with a centered hole subjected to uni-axial compressive stresses. From the electrical potential distribution on the sample surface, the mechanical response of the material is obtained at different load levels.     

Partial linearization for noninvertible mappings

A Hartman-Grobman result for noninvertible mappings is proved. It is assumed that the spectrum of the linearized mapping contains zero but is disjoint from the complex unit circle. In the infinite-dimensional case, additional spectral conditions are assumed. These additional conditions are satisfied if the linearized mapping is completely continuous. The proof combines Hartman'sC ¹ linearization method for contractive mappings [10] with our previous result [1] on linearization of the expanding part.The paper was written while the second author was an Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Fellow in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Augsburg, Germany.     

Laser-assisted high-resolution loading dilatometer and applications

A new hot forging apparatus has been sucessfully developed and applied for the experimental determination of continuum mechanical sintering parameters and theoretical modeling of thin-film sintering. A precise automatic loading system and high-resolution laser measurement system enable accurate measurement of radial and axial strains of cylindrical specimens under constant or intermittent uniaxial loads of 0-5000 N during high-temperature densification. Preliminary experimental results are demonstrated and the key features of technological significance in the design introduced in detail.     

Topological simplification of nonautonomous difference equations

In this paper, we continue the study of geometric properties of nonautonomous difference equations in arbitrary Banach spaces which was begun in [2 Aulbach, B. 1998. Building on previous results on invariant fiber bundles and foliations, this paper addresses the problem of topological simplifications via continuous conjugacies and semiconjugacies. In particular, we establish a reduction principle for not necessarily invertible difference equations, as well as a generalized Hartman–Grobman theorem for systems with not necessarily invertible linear part.
