On a borderline between the NP-hard and polynomial-time solvable cases of the flow shop with job-dependent storage requirements

The paper is concerned with the two-machine flow shop, where each job requires an additional resource (referred to as storage space) from the start of its first operation till the end of its second operation. The storage requirement of a job is determined by the processing time of its first operation. At any point in time, the total consumption of this additional resource cannot exceed a given limit (referred to as the storage capacity). The goal is to minimise the makespan, i.e. to minimise the time needed for the completion of all jobs. This problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. The paper analyses how the parameter - a lower bound on the storage capacity specified in terms of the processing times, affects the computational complexity.

     

Are N-phthaloyl and O-allyl protective groups orthogonal?

Using allyl 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-phthalimido-β-d-glucopyranoside as a model substrate, it was shown that the degree of orthogonality of N-phthaloyl and O-allyl protective groups under the conditions of hydrazinolysis of the phthalimide group depends on the amount of atmospheric oxygen in the reaction mixture during the reaction and during the work-up procedure.

Influence of a cellulose diacetate matrix on the complexation kinetics of tetraphenylporphin with Zn and Cd

The dependence of the reaction rate of tetraphenylporphin zinc and cadmium complexes in a polymer matrix on a base of cellulose diacetate and low-molecular model solutions was investigated. The characteristics of the diffusive transport of aqueous solutions of zinc and cadmium acetates through the cellulose diacetate membrane were obtained. The kinetic control of the porphyrin reaction incorporated into the polymer, and the determining influence of the steric limitations of the matrix of a rigid chain polymer on macroheterocycle deformation (and thus its reactivity) are shown.     

Optical properties and orientational order of deoxyribonucleic acid molecules at interfaces

A high degree of planar orientational order of DNA molecules in thin films has been discovered by the oblique-polarized-beam method. The coefficients of surface birefringence of films with different thicknesses are measured. The thickness of optically anisotropic surface layers, which are characterized by macroscopic values higher than the diameter of DNA molecules by three orders of magnitude in terms of thickness, is determined. A difference in the main polarizabilities of the monomer unit of DNA, which is estimated for the films, is compared with the corresponding value for the solution measured by flow birefringence. The effect of temperature on the coefficient of birefringence of the films is examined. A comparison of the data on the native and denatured DNA shows that the degree of orientational order for the single-helix structure is smaller than that for the double helix.     

Flat coordinates for Saito Frobenius manifolds and string theory

We investigate the connection between the models of topological conformal theory and noncritical string theory with Saito Frobenius manifolds. For this, we propose a new direct way to calculate the flat coordinates using the integral representation for solutions of the Gauss–Manin system connected with a given Saito Frobenius manifold. We present explicit calculations in the case of a singularity of type A _n . We also discuss a possible generalization of our proposed approach to SU(N) _k /(SU(N) _k+1 × U(1)) Kazama–Suzuki theories. We prove a theorem that the potential connected with these models is an isolated singularity, which is a condition for the Frobenius manifold structure to emerge on its deformation manifold. This fact allows using the Dijkgraaf–Verlinde–Verlinde approach to solve similar Kazama–Suzuki models.
