Three-dimensional modelling and dynamic analysis of an automatic ball balancer in an optical disk drive

Dynamic behaviours and stability of an automatic ball balancer (ABB) in an optical disk drive are analyzed based on the proposed three-dimensional dynamic model. For dynamic analysis, the feeding deck with the ball balancer and a spindle motor is modelled as a rigid body with six degrees of freedom. The nonlinear equations of motion are derived using Lagrange's equation in order to describe the translational and rotational motions of the system. From the derived nonlinear equations, the linearized equations of motion in the neighbourhood of a balanced equilibrium position are obtained by the perturbation method. These equations are coupled, linear, differential equations with time-dependent periodic coefficients, from which the stability of the system is analyzed by using the Floquet theory. Finally, the time responses are computed to verify the results of the stability analysis, and to investigate the balancing performance of the ABB.     

Generalization of Drinfeld Quantum Affine Algebras

Drinfeld gave a current realization of the quantum affine algebras as a Hopf algebra with a simple comultiplication for the quantum current operators. In this Letter, we will present a generalization of such a realization of quantum Hopf algebras. As a special case, we will choose the structure functions for this algebra to be elliptic functions to derive certain elliptic quantum groups as a Hopf algebra, which degenerates into quantum affine algebras if we take certain degeneration of the structure functions.     

Crystal algebra

We define the crystal algebra, an algebra which has a base of elements of crystal bases of a quantum group. The multiplication is defined by the tensor product rule of crystal bases. A universal n-colored crystal algebra is defined. We study the relation between those algebras and the tensor algebras of the crystal algebra of U _q (sl(2)) and give a presentation by generators and relations for the case of U _q (sl(n)).     

BIVARIATE CUBIC B-SPLINES RELATIVE TO CROSS-CUT TRIANGULATIONS

In this paper we prove that there are no locally supported bivariate G~(k-1)spline functionsof degree k on cross-cut grid partitioned regions with no more than three lines meeting at acommon vertex.We also give explicit expressions of bivariate C~1 cubic B-spline with smallestlocal support on cross-cut triangular grid partitioned regions where each vertex is theintersection of three lines.Properly normalized,these B-splines are proved to be uniquelydetermined and form a partition of unity.Furthermore,the corresponding waxationdiminishing bivariate spline operators are proved to preserve all linear polynomials of twovariables.These facts enable us to give error estimates for approximation by bivariate C~1cubic splines for functions of class C,C~1 and C~2.     

Intense photoluminescence at 2.7 μm in transparent Er 3+:CaF2-fluorophosphate glass microcomposite

Er3+ doped CaF2-fluorophosphate (FP) glass microcomposites were produced by heat-treating the mixture of Er3+:CaF2 precipitate and FP glass powder above the melting temperature of the FP glass. The appearance of CaF2 crystallites in the resulting composites was confirmed by x ray diffraction. Despite the fact that the average diameter of the crystallites was around 10 μm as revealed by the micromorphology study, a transparent composite was obtained by matching the refractive index of FP glass to that of CaF2. Intense IR fluorescence at around 2.7 μm was observed in the composite, implying the composite would be a promising candidate for IR lasers and amplifiers.
