This work explores coatings with thermally switchable wetting behavior, based on block copolymers that possess both hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments. The amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized by coupling allyl-ended poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hydride-ended poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oligomers via a Pt catalyst. One near-symmetric diblock possessed an order-disorder transition temperature (TODT) of 64 °C. When cooled through TODT in ambient air, the PDMS domains wet the film's surface, producing a hydrophobic coating with a water contact angle (CA) = 90°. However, when cooled in humidified air, hydrophilic PEO domains form at the surface, yielding CA = 30–40°. The coatings can be reversibly switched between the two states by reheating above TODT, in the appropriate environment, and then cooling, rapidly generating the desired room-temperature surface wettability. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background

Peel tests are frequently used to perform measurements of adhesive strength for pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes. Current lab methodologies for 90° peel tests translate the model substrate orthogonally to the peel direction in order to maintain the peel angle, precluding testing from immovable substrates.

Objective

It was our objective to develop a peel fixture capable of testing temporary pavement marking (TPM) tapes and other PSA tapes from immovable substrates such as roadways surfaces.

Methods

We present a modular peel fixture for conducting peel experiments directly on immovable substrates. The fixture was validated through a series of peel tests on consumer tapes to reproduce the linear width dependence and viscoelastic rate dependence found in traditional peeling setups. To test the capabilities of the fixture, a series of peel tests were conducted with various tapes on controlled surfaces, and a commercial tape on various immovable substrates.

Results

We demonstrate the ability of our fixture to reproduce results reported for traditional peel tests from literature. In addition, we were able to conduct peel tests directly on immovable substrates such as the benchtop.

Conclusions

This fixture shows potential for both traditional peeling tests, and for use in in-situ peel experiments from substrates relevant to the end application of the PSA tape.

The first charge‐neutral Lewis base adducts of tin(IV) tetraazide, [Sn(N3)4(bpy)], [Sn(N3)4(phen)] and [Sn(N3)4(py)2], and the salt bis{bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium} hexa(azido)stannate [(PPN)2Sn(N3)6] (bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridine; phen = 1,10‐phenanthroline; py = pyridine; PPN = N(PPh3)2) have been prepared using covalent or ionic azide‐transfer reagents and ligand‐exchange reactions. The azides were isolated on the 0.3 to 1 g scale and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies, microanalytical and thermal methods and their molecular structures determined by single‐crystal XRD. All complexes have a distorted octahedral Sn[N]6 coordination geometry and possess greater thermal stability than their Si and Ge homologues. The nitrogen content of the adducts of up to 44 % exceed any SnIV compound known hitherto.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of tryptophan tryptophylquinone, a protein‐derived cofactor, involves a long‐range reaction mediated by a bis‐FeIV intermediate of a diheme enzyme, MauG. Recently, a unique charge‐resonance (CR) phenomenon was discovered in this intermediate, and a biological, long‐distance CR model was proposed. This model suggests that the chemical nature of the bis‐FeIV species is not as simple as it appears; rather, it is composed of a collection of resonance structures in a dynamic equilibrium. Here, we experimentally evaluated the proposed CR model by introducing small molecules to, and measuring the temperature dependence of, bis‐FeIV MauG. Spectroscopic evidence was presented to demonstrate that the selected compounds increase the decay rate of the bis‐FeIV species by disrupting the equilibrium of the resonance structures that constitutes the proposed CR model. The results support this new CR model and bring a fresh concept to the classical CR theory.  相似文献

Single‐unit‐cell Sn‐MFI, with the detectable Sn uniformly distributed and exclusively located at framework sites, is reported for the first time. The direct, single‐step, synthesis is based on repetitive branching caused by rotational intergrowths of single‐unit‐cell lamellae. The self‐pillared, meso‐ and microporous zeolite is an active and selective catalyst for sugar isomerization. High yields for the conversion of glucose into fructose and lactose to lactulose are demonstrated.  相似文献

Rheo-optics, microspectrophotometry, and optical contrast measurements were used to gain new insights into the interrelated effects of liquid crystalline phase behavior, flow alignment, and microstructural relaxation on cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films’ alignment and optical properties. Optical contrast measurements were found to be an effective and facile way of determining changes in anisotropy directly from cross-polarized microscopy images. This method was used to continuously measure microstructural relaxation after the cessation of shear as well as the anisotropy of dried CNC films. Aqueous liquid crystalline CNC dispersions showed greater alignment after shear than isotropic or biphasic dispersions. However, CNC gels exhibited lower alignment at equivalent shear rates. The combination of greater initial alignment and slower relaxation of sheared liquid crystalline dispersions resulted in the most optically anisotropic films. Depending on their thickness, the CNC films were optically transparent in the visible regime or exhibited tunable interference colors. The results of this work highlight the tunability of CNC dispersion processing for producing color filters and other optical materials with controlled properties.  相似文献

Adsorption of U(VI) and other heavy metals on millimetre sized polymer-coated polyacrylinitrile (PAN) beads was investigated. PAN was used as scaffolds for the polymer layer thus producing porous material of high surface area, improved mechanical strength and improved adsorption capabilities. Extensive U(VI) adsorption studies were undertaken and results modelled using different kinetic and equilibrium models. Parameters including thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. Sorbent capacities were assessed as 124, 16, and 33 mg g?1 for PCP, SPP and Dowex at 60 °C respectively. U(VI) adsorption mechanism for these adsorbents was postulated. Recovered uranium may be used for production of cheap electricity.  相似文献
