Application of x-ray fluorescence analysis to investigation of the composition of gunshot residues

We have used x-ray fluorescence analysis to study the elemental composition of gunshot residues from smooth-bore and rifled-bore guns. We have established that it is possible to differentiate between types of projectiles (jacketed/lead), types of primers (corrosive/noncorrosive), and types of propellant powders (black/smokeless) by analysis of the elemental composition of the gunshot residues. We have shown that the mercury content in gunshot residues on the surface of the object carrying the residues steadily decreases as storage time increases. Despite this fact, mercury can be preserved as a component of gunshot residues on the object (cotton cloth) under room conditions for more than 45 days. __________ Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Spektroskopii, Vol. 73, No. 3, pp. 320–325, May–June, 2006.

Astraphloxin Cyanine Dye as a Reagent for the Selective Extraction-Photometric Determination of Trace Mercury(II)

A procedure was developed for the extraction-photometric determination of low concentrations of mercury(II) in aqueous solutions. It is based on the reaction of the Hg Br ₃ ^? acidocomplex with the Astraphloxin cationic dye to give an ion pair extracted with toluene. The detection limit for mercury is 0.015 mg/L. Effects of a number of heavy metal cations on determining mercury(II) were studied. It was shown that these effects appear in the presence of 500-fold molar amounts of interferents. The procedure was used for determining mercury(II) in the presence of 200-fold molar amounts of some heavy metal cations. The relative standard deviation was no worse than 5%.

Effect of an electric discharge on decomposition of asymmetric dimethylhydrazine

The behavior of asymmetric dimethylhydrazine was studied in helium and air-helium media with and without passage of electric current through the discharge unit of the reactor. The products of the corresponding transformations of asymmetric dimethylhydrazine were identified by the gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry technique.     

The argon spectrum in the range of 1200–2000 cm<Superscript>–1</Superscript>

Atomic argon spectrum in the range of 1200–2000 cm^–1 has been recorded by time-resolved Fourier transform spectroscopy. The lines have been identified using the oscillator strengths calculated by the quantum-defect method. Previously unknown energies of the 6h levels of Ar I have been found from the spectrum.
