Bénard-Marangoni instability in a viscoelastic Jeffreys' fluid layer

Coupled buoyancy (Bénard) and thermocapillary (Marangoni) convection in a thin fluid layer of a viscoelastic fluid are studied. The viscoelastic fluid is modeled by Jeffreys' constitutive equation. The lower surface of the layer is in contact with a rigid heat-conducting plate while its upper surface is subject to a temperature-dependent surface tension. The critical temperature difference between both boundaries corresponding to the onset of convection is calculated. The role of the various viscometric coefficients is discussed. In the appendix it is shown that Jeffreys' constitutive relation is easily derived from thermodynamic considerations based on extended irreversible thermodynamics.

Some generalizations of the virial theorem

Generalizations of the virial theorem are derived: In atomic physics, in systems including electromagnetic radiation, in Newtonian gravitation, and in general relativity and also some types of nuclear forces. The cases discussed are limited to potentials which can be produced by the exchange of one particle, which include potentials of the form1/r. The method used is to set equal a change in energy produced by an infinitesimal similarity transformation to a change of energy obtained by a first-order perturbation.Work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under contract # W-7405-Eng-48.     

Synthesis and antibody conjugation of magnetic nanoparticles with improved specific power absorption rates for alternating magnetic field cancer therapy

Bionized nanoferrite (BNF) particles with high specific power absorption rates were synthesized in the size range of 20–100 nm by high-pressure homogenization for targeted cancer therapy with alternating magnetic fields. Several strategies were used to conjugate antibodies to the BNF particles. These strategies were compared using an immunoassay to find optimal conditions to reach a high immunoreactivity of the final antibody–particle conjugate.

Synthesis and structure of 4-phenoxy-H[1λ⁴,2,4,6]thiatriazino[4,3a]benzimidazole-2-oxide 5, 3-amino-4H[1λ⁴,2,4,6]thiatriazino[2,3-a]benzimidazole-1-oxide 6 and 3-amino-5-dimethylamino-2-tosyl-1λ⁴, 2,4,6-thiatriazine-1-oxide 7, obtained by hydrolysis of the corresponding arenesulfonyl imino compounds are discussed. The molecular and crystal structure of N-benzoyl-? tosyl-guanidine is presented.
