Cellulose whiskers were prepared from wood- and cotton-based microcrystalline cellulose and dried by two methods: freeze-drying or air-drying. The effect of drying method on the properties and structure of the whiskers were studied. Furthermore, the influence of the source of cellulose on the nanoscale structure was investigated. Drying method was observed to slightly influence the thermal stability of cellulose whiskers, whereas the char residue varied significantly depending on the drying process performed. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to examine the crystallinity and nanoscale structure of the dried whiskers. It was observed that the crystal structure and crystallinity of cellulose whiskers remained during all treatments, whereas their nanoscale structure was significantly influenced by drying method, neutralization, and source of cellulose. Relationships between thermal behavior and nanoscale structure were reported and discussed.  相似文献

Photon upconverting nanophosphors (UCNPs) have a unique capability to produce anti-Stokes emission at visible wavelengths via sequential multiphoton absorption upon infrared excitation. Since the anti-Stokes emission can be easily spectrally resolved from the Stokes' shifted autofluorescence, the upconversion luminescence (UCL) is a highly attractive reporter technology for optical biosensors and biomolecular binding assays – potentially enabling unprecedented sensitivity in separation-based solid-phase immunoassays.  相似文献

Various copper‐based catalyst systems and reaction conditions were studied in the graft copolymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAam) with a cellulose‐based macroinitiator by controlled radical polymerization. The cellulose macroinitiator with degree of substitution DS = 0.44 was synthesized from dissolving softwood pulp in a LiCl/DMAc solution. The graft copolymerizations of DMAam, using the cellulose macroinitiator and various copper‐based catalyst systems, were then carried out in DMSO solutions. The copolymerization kinetics was followed by 1H NMR. Water‐soluble cellulose‐g‐PDMAam copolymers were comprehensively characterized by ATR‐FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies and SEC analyses. DLS and steady‐shear viscosity measurements revealed that when the DPgraft of the cellulose‐g‐PDMAam copolymer is high enough, the copolymer forms a more compact structure in water. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy and dipolar dephasing technique was used to determine the extent of condensation in various technical lignins. The accuracy of dipolar dephasing method was first investigated with the aid of some lignin model compounds and two various methods to determine the degree of condensation were compared. On the basis of the model compound experiments both methods based on dipolar dephasing technique can be applied to investigate the extent of condensation in lignin. The lignin results indicate that technical softwood lignins, as well as enzymatically isolated wood lignin, are more condensed than milled wood lignin, which is generally assumed to represent native lignin. Residual lignins isolated after oxygen delignification and peroxide bleaching stages were found more condensed than residual lignin in unbleached pulps. In studies of the spent liquor lignins of flow-through kraft pulping the extent of condensation was found to increase as the cooking proceeded.  相似文献

Summary ARC/CL wheat flour and potato powder reference materials (RMs) prepared by the Central Laboratory of the Agricultural Research Centre of Finland, earlier specified for contents of essential and toxic trace elements, were characterized for contents of total dietary fiber (TDF). Recommended concentration values established were obtained on the basis of an interlaboratory comparison study conducted involving 10 reference laboratories recognized for their reliability in TDF determinations. The recommended TDF contents established were based on an enzymatic-gravimetric method employed by the participating laboratories to determine TDF or water insoluble (WIS) and water soluble (WS) DF which were then added up to obtain TDF. After exclusion of outliers the recommended concentration values were expressed as the medians ±95% confidence limits of the average values by the participating laboratories. The coefficient of variation obtained for the recommended concentration range of TDF was within 7% for both RMs.  相似文献

Solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy was used to determine the degree of cellulose crystallinity (CrI) in kraft, flow-through kraft and polysulphide–anthraquinone (PS–AQ) pulps of pine and birch containing various amounts of hemicelluloses. The applicability of acid hydrolysis and the purely spectroscopic proton spin-relaxation based spectral edition (PSRE) method to remove the interfering hemicellulose signals prior to the determination of CrI were also compared. For softwood pulps, the spectroscopic removal of hemicelluloses by PSRE was found to be more efficient than the removal of hemicelluloses by acid hydrolysis. In addition to that, the PSRE method also provides information on the associations between cellulose and hemicelluloses. On the basis of the incomplete removal of xylan from the cellulose subspectra by PSRE, the deposition of xylan on cellulose fibrils and therefore an ordered ultrastructure of xylan in birch pulps was suggested. The ordered structure of xylan in birch pulps was also supported by the observed change of xylan conformation after regeneration. Similarly, glucomannan in pine pulps may have an ordered structure. According to the 13C CPMAS measurements conducted after acid hydrolysis, the degree of cellulose crystallinity was found to be slightly lower in birch pulps than in the pine pulps. Any significant differences in cellulose crystallinity were not found between the pulps obtained by the various pulping methods. Only in pine PS–AQ pulp, the degree of cellulose crystallinity may be slightly lower than in the kraft pulps containing less hemicelluloses.  相似文献

N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO) is a known cellulose solvent used in industrial scale (LyoCel process). We have studied interactions between pretreated softwood pulp fibers and aqueous NMMO using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic methods, including solid state cross polarisation magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) 13C and 15N spectroscopies, and 1H high resolution MAS NMR spectroscopy. Changes in both cellulose morphology and in accessibility of solvents were observed after the pulp samples that were exposed to solvent species were treated at elevated temperature. Evidence about interactions between cellulose and solvent components was observed already after a heat treatment of 15 min. The crystalline structure of cellulose was seen to remain intact for the first 30 min of heat treatment, at the same time there was a re-distribution of solvent species taking place. After a 90 min heat treatment the crystalline structure of cellulose had experienced major changes, and potential signs of regeneration into cellulose II were observed.  相似文献

Heterogeneous modification of various celluloses with fatty acids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Heterogeneous modification of various types of cellulose (microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose whiskers and regenerated cellulose) was performed with long-chain fatty acids by an esterification reaction. The differences in reactivity between the celluloses were studied as well as the influences of the chain length and double bond content of the fatty acids. The success of the modification reaction and the structure of modified samples were studied with diverse characterization methods. Surface modification changed the thermal stability of cellulose by decreasing the degradation temperature but also made the pyrolysis curve two-stepped due to the double bonds in the fatty acid chain. It was observed that the nature of the fatty acid affected the degree of substitution (DS). The longer the fatty acid chain was, the lower was the DS. Fatty acids with increased double bond content gave decreased DS. Regenerated cellulose seemed to have the highest surface reactivity due to the distinct morphological structure, which also led to a much lower quantity of fatty acids attached to the structure than for other modified cellulose particles. The mixture of tall oil fatty acids behaved in the same manner as the commercial fatty acids, proving to be an excellent “green” choice for this kind of application.  相似文献

Water-soluble cellulose-graft-PDMAam copolymers were prepared by single-electron-transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). Cellulose based macroinitiator for SET-LRP with a degree of substitution DS  2 was synthesized from softwood dissolving pulp in a homogeneous LiCl/DMAc solution. The macroinitiator was then grafted using N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAam) in DMSO. Formation of cellulose-g-DMAam copolymers were confirmed by ATR–FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and SEC analyses. Light scattering and steady–shear viscosity measurements revealed that the studied chain length of grafts (DPgraft) had only minor effects on the solution properties of cellulose-g-PDMAam copolymers. SLS studies suggested a loose, solvent-draining architecture of the cellulose-g-PDMAam copolymer particles in H2O.  相似文献

The syntheses and rheological behavior of ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (EHEC)‐based graft‐copolymers were studied. Copolymers were prepared by grafting EHEC with acrylamide (Aam) via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Hydroxyl groups of EHEC were esterified with a carboxylic acid functional chain transfer agent (CTA) to prepare EHEC‐macroCTAs with different degrees of substitution. EHEC‐macroCTAs were characterized by ATR‐FTIR, 13C NMR, and SEC, and elemental analysis was used to quantify the degree of CTA substitution. EHEC‐macroCTAs with different degrees of substitution were copolymerized with acrylamide by “grafting from” technique. Formation of new cellulose‐based copolymers was comprehensively confirmed by 1H NMR, ATR‐FTIR, and SEC measurements. Further, the associations of EHEC‐g‐PAam copolymers in water were studied at various concentrations and temperatures by means of UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and rheological measurements. The results indicate that copolymers have both intra and intermolecular association in water depending on the amount of grafts. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
