The alicyclic ring contraction of perfluoro-1-phenyltetralin in reaction with antimony pentafluoride

Perfluoro-1-phenyltetralin (1) heated with antimony pentafluoride at 130 °C, then treated with water, gave a mixture of perfluorinated 3-methyl-2-phenylindenone (3), 3-methyl-2-phenylindene (4), 3-hydroxy-1-methyl-3-phenylindan (5), 1-methyl-3-phenylindan (6), 9-methyl-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroanthracene (7), and 1,9-dimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-β-naphthindan (8). When heated with SbF₅ in the presence of HF, then treated with water, compound 1 is transformed to a mixture of products 3-6. The reaction at 170 and 200 °C forms compounds 3-6 together with perfluoro-2-(cyclohexen-1-yl)-3-methylindene (10).     

Heteromolecular insertion of EtNCX (X = O, S) and RCN (R = CH3, C6H5) into tungsten hexachloride

The interactions of tungsten hexachloride with EtNCX (X = O, S) and RCN (R = CH₃, C₆H₅) were studied. In the case of E = CH₃, heterocumulenes are inserted at the W-Cl bond, while in the case of R = C₆H₅, they were inserted at a multiple tungsten-nitrogen bond of an intermediate imido complex [WCl₄(NCPh)(CNCl₂Ph)]. The IR, MALDI TOFF mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis data confirmed that these interactions yielded the products of heteromolecular insertion, namely, [WCl₄{(EtNCO)₂(MeCN)Cl}], [WCl₄(EtNCS)₂(MeCN)Cl], [WCl₄N(CCl₂Ph)C(=NEt)O}], and WCl₄N(CCl₂Ph)C(=NEt)S}], whose compositions and structures were determined by the nature of the organic nitrile radical.

X-ray diffraction investigation of perfluoro-4-methylenecyclohexa-2,5-dienones

Perfluorinated 8-phenyl-7,8-diethylbicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,4,6-trien-3-one (3), 2-(4-oxocyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene)-1,1-diethylbenzocyclobutene (4) and 2-(4-oxocyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene)-5-(2-phenyl-cis-1,2-diethylbenzocyclobuten-1-yloxy)-1,1-diethylbenzocyclobutene (5), including the 4-methylencyclohexa-2,5-dienone fragment, were prepared by the reaction of perfluoro-1,1-(1) and-1,2-diethylbenzocyclobutene (2) with pentafluorobenzene in SbF₅. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study of compounds 3–5 revealed that the oxygen atom of the C=O group participated in the formation of supramolecular architectures in all three compounds, and C=O…π bonding may be considered as the corresponding synthon (with increased separation in the case of compound 5). C-F…π bonding acts as a second synthon. F…F interactions in crystals 3–5 were classified as stabilizing or enforced.
