On Classification of Modular Tensor Categories

We classify all unitary modular tensor categories (UMTCs) of rank ≤ 4. There are a total of 35 UMTCs of rank ≤ 4 up to ribbon tensor equivalence. Since the distinction between the modular S-matrix S and −S has both topological and physical significance, so in our convention there are a total of 70 UMTCs of rank ≤ 4. In particular, there are two trivial UMTCs with S = (±1). Each such UMTC can be obtained from 10 non-trivial prime UMTCs by direct product, and some symmetry operations. Explicit data of the 10 non-trivial prime UMTCs are given in Sect. 5. Relevance of UMTCs to topological quantum computation and various conjectures are given in Sect. 6.

Superconductive tunneling into niobium-tin thin films

Oxide-layer tunnel junctions exhibiting both quasi-particle and Josephson tunneling were produced by overlaying lead on niobium-tin thin films. The superconducting transition temperature and average energy gap of the Nb-Sn both increased as the tin concentration was increased toward Nb₃Sn and reached maximum values of 17.2 K and 3.2 meV, respectively, or 2Δ = 4.3 kT_c.     

Infrared spectroscopy of self-assembled monolayer films on silicon

Infrared vibrational spectroscopy in an attenuated total reflection (ATR) geometry has been employed to investigate the presence of organic thin layers on Si-wafer surfaces. The phenomena have been simulated to show there can be a field enhancement with the presented single-reflection ATR (SR-ATR) approach which is substantially larger than for conventional ATR or specular reflection. In SR-ATR, a discontinuity of the field normal to the film contributes a field enhancement in the lower index thin film causing a two order of magnitude increase in sensitivity. SR-ATR was employed to characterize a single monolayer of undecylenic acid self-assembled on Si(1 1 1) and to investigate a two monolayer system obtained by adding a monolayer of bovine serum albumin protein.     

Adsorption of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate to Colloidal Titanium Dioxide: An Electrophoretic Fingerprinting Investigation

The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate to colloidal titanium dioxide was investigated using the electrophoretic fingerprinting approach. An electrophoretic fingerprint is a contour diagram of the observed electrophoretic mobility as a function of the bulk solution pH and plambda, the log of the bulk solution conductivity. Surfactant adsorption was observed to be strong under acidic conditions, as illustrated in the dramatic changes in the electrophoretic fingerprints. Electrokinetic data were compared with adsorption isotherm data obtained by a depletion method and good qualitative agreement was found. The observed pH changes associated with surfactant adsorption suggested ligand exchange as a possible mechanism of adsorption. Electrophoretic fingerprinting was shown to be a powerful means of examining surfactant adsorption to colloidal particles. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.
