Intra- and Inter-molecular Sulf- hydryl Hydrogen Bonding: Facilitating Proton Transfer Events for Determination of pH in Sea Water

This work presents the electrochemical response of a 2-(methylthio)phenol glassy carbon based electrode for a promising voltammetric pH sensor in both buffered and low-buffered solutions. Electropolymerization of the redox species was performed with the resulting polymer presenting a Nernstian response in buffered media, with a sensitivity of 51 mV/pH unit. The effectiveness of the sulfhydryl bond to facilitate proton transfer from the bulk solution to the phenol molecules has been confirmed, providing an accurate pH measurement of 8.28 in sea water media, compared to that measured with a calibrated glass pH probe of 8.30.

We consider the onset of convection in a porous medium heated from below and subjected to a horizontal mean flow. The effect of porous inertia is studied, and the transverse aspect ratio a of the medium is taken into accout. We find that the dominant modes are longitudinal rolls (L.R) if a is an integer or transverse traveling rolls (T.R) if a is below a_c with a_c<1. When a is not an integer with a>a_c, the setting on patterns are oscillatory three-dimensional structures (3D) for a>1 or T.R for a_c<a<1 provided that the Reynolds number remains below a critical value Re_K^*. On Parabolicity and Area Growth of Minimal Surfaces

We establish parabolicity and quadratic area growth for minimal surfaces-with-boundary contained in regions of ?³ which are within a sub-logarithmic factor of the exterior of a cone. Unlike previous work showing that these two properties hold for minimal surfaces-with-boundary contained between two catenoids, we do not make use of universal superharmonic functions. Instead, we use stochastic methods, which have the additional feature of giving a type of parabolicity in a more general context than Brownian motion on a minimal surface.     

2-aminothiophenes by the gewald reaction

The review presents the most elegant and promising set of synthetic routes for the synthesis of 2-aminothiophenes by the Gewald reaction. Applications of this facile methodology to pharmaceuticals and dyestuffs have been demonstrated.     

Open‐Pore Two‐Dimensional MFI Zeolite Nanosheets for the Fabrication of Hydrocarbon‐Isomer‐Selective Membranes on Porous Polymer Supports

Two‐dimensional zeolite nanosheets that do not contain any organic structure‐directing agents were prepared from a multilamellar MFI (ML‐MFI) zeolite. ML‐MFI was first exfoliated by melt compounding and then detemplated by treatment with a mixture of H₂SO₄ and H₂O₂ (piranha solution). The obtained OSDA‐free MFI nanosheets disperse well in water and can be used for coating applications. Deposits made on porous polybenzimidazole (PBI) supports by simple filtration of these suspensions exhibit an n‐butane/isobutane selectivity of 5.4, with an n‐butane permeance of 3.5×10^?7 mol m^?2 s^?1 Pa^?1 (ca. 1000 GPU).     

Optical switching between bistable soliton states: a theoretical review

In this paper we summarize what is currently known about optical switching between bright bistable soliton states in one and higher dimensions. A guideline to selecting media with appropriate intensity-dependent refractive indices to support bistable solitary waves is presented. The stability criterion for robustness of the solitary waves is discussed. Finally, some methods and numerical examples of optical switching are presented.
