Two efficient syntheses of methyl 4-mercaptobenzoate are described, one utilizing the dianion of 4-bromothiophenol, the other a S_NAr reaction starting with 4-fluorobenzonitrile.     

Synthesis of triazole analogues of the nanaomycin antibiotics using ‘click chemistry’

A series of triazole analogues of the nanaomycin family of antibiotics have been prepared using a ‘click’ dipolar cycloaddition of a naphthalene azide to various alkynes, followed by oxidation to the desired pyranonaphthoquinones.     

Overview of sample introduction techniques prior to GC for the analysis of volatiles in solid materials

Sample preparation and introduction techniques are very critical steps in gas chromatography analysis and particularly in the analysis of volatiles in solid samples. In these cases, they can be divided into two main categories: direct and indirect approaches, based on how the solid sample is treated, i.e. with and without dissolution (or extraction) of analytes from the solid sample. To enable routine application, coupling with sample preparation techniques (especially solid or solvent‐based microextractions) is needed to achieve automation. Here, an overview of the most common sample introduction techniques for gas chromatography with their advantages and drawbacks is presented and discussed, including references to relevant examples. So, this review can serve as guidance for new users.     

Role of light-induced scattering in the optical limitation of laser radiation on the basis of fullerene-containing media

A theoretical and experimental study of the contribution of light-induced scattering to nonlinear optical limitation is made. It is shown that light-induced scattering makes a considerable contribution to the optical limitation of radiation by fullerene-containing solutions. Radiation is scattered by small-scale (1–10 μm) inhomogeneities of density, and the corresponding increments are rather large. Because of this, scattering can be initiated by small-scale inhomogeneities of the input beam. Numerical simulation of nonlinear scattering is made, and the angular distribution and limitation of radiation in optical limiters are calculated. The calculation results are compared with the experiment.     

Luminescent lanthanide complexes with liquid crystalline properties

Lewis-base adducts of tris( β-diketonato)lanthanide(III) complexes were prepared, where the β-diketone is para -alkoxy-substituted 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione. These compounds are the first examples of liquid crystalline lanthanide complexes in which the mesomorphism is introduced via a β-diketonate ligand. Depending on the type of the Lewis base, the metallomesogens exhibit a monotropic smectic A or a monotropic highly ordered smectic phase. Intense photoluminescence was observed for the europium(III) complexes at room temperature.
