Coordination properties of 6-deoxy-6-[1-(2-amino) ethylamino]-β-cyclodextrin and the ability of its copper(II) complex to recognize and separate amino acid enantiomeric pairs

The functionalized cyclodextrin 6-deoxy-6-[1-(2-amino)ethylamino]--cyclodextrin was synthesized, and an NMR, EPR, pH-metric, and calorimetric investigation was carried out in aqueous solution in order to ascertain its behaviour towards protonation and copper(II) complex formation. The thermodynamic parameters of the ternary complex formation with alanine, phenylalanine and tryptophan enantiomeric pairs were also determined (25° C andI=0.1 mol dm^–3). No thermodynamic enantioselectivity was observed in these systems, while a chiral, though poor, discrimination was observed in LEC: c.d. spectra also show enantiomeric stereoselectivity. The results of the present investigation, compared with previously reported results, suggest the occurence of acis-complex trans-complex equilibrium in such systems.     

Electron impact mass spectrometric investigation of pyrrole mono-, di- and tri-carboxylic acids

The electron impact-induced fragmentation processes of pyrrole-2-, -3-, -2,3-, -3,4-, -2,5- and -2,3,4-carboxylic acids were investigated with the aid of metastable ion, collisional and deuterium labelling experiments. The general behaviour of these compounds is discussed in detail, together with the reasonable structures of the more relevant fragment ions.     

Studies on structure characterization of tryptophan melanin: Comparison between filament and curie-point pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Structural studies of a synthetic melanin, obtained by means of performic acid oxidation of tryptophan, were carried out by pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). To identify the best pyrolysis conditions, both Curie-point pyrolysis and filament pyrolysis were employed and the effects of pyrolysis temperatures and times were studied. Using the first approach, various compounds were identified: toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene, indole, methylindole, ethylindole, phenol, cresol and ethylphenol. Using filament pyrolysis some interesting differences could be observed. Whereas toluene, ethylbenzene, phenol, cresol and methylindole were found, neither indole nor ethylindole was detected. Instead, new pyrolysis products were evident, such as methylpyrrole and indolin-2-one. Hence filament pyrolysis seems to activate different thermal decomposition pathways of the melanin under study. It is suggested that tryptophan melanin is a polymer containing indole and hydroxyindole derivatives as subunits.     

Indium(III) chloride catalyzed one step synthesis of some new dibenzo(d,f)(1,3)dioxepines and 12H-dibenzo(d,g)(1,3)dioxocin derivatives

In the presence of catalytic amount of indium(III) chloride (10 mol %), 2,2′-dihydroxybiphenyl and bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)methane react quickly, without using any solvent, with ketones or β-keto esters possessing at least one hydrogen atom in α to the ketone-carbonyl group, to afford some new dibenzo(d,f)(1,3)dioxepines and some 12H-dibenzo(d,g)(1,3)dioxocin derivatives, respectively.     

Demonstrating Linear Regression and Error Using an Experiment with a Microwave Oven

To provide an application for the method of linear least squares to data collected in a laboratory, a beaker with water is heated in a microwave oven, and the water temperature is measured as a function of heating variables (time and oven setting). This procedure enables a student to obtain a regression line for each oven setting, and to evaluate the intercept and slope of this line and compare them with the initial temperature of the water and the heating versus oven setting relationship described in the microwaves manufacturers manual. They also are asked to identify any sources of errors observed in this experiment.     

Complex formation equilibria between Ag(I) and thioureas in n-propanol

Complex formation equilibria between Ag(I) and thiourea or N-alkyl-substituted thioureas have been investigated in n-propanol by potentiometry at 10 °C intervals from 5 to 50 °C. Stepwise formation of tris-coordinated AgL_n (n = 1-3) complexes has been found for the majority of the ligands. ΔH and ΔS values for the complex formation reactions have been evaluated from the dependence of ln β_n on temperature. The alkyl-substituents affect the ligand affinities in different ways in relation with the coordination level n.The reactions are exothermic with few exceptions. Enthalpy favoured complex formation with negative dependence of ΔG on temperature (ΔS > 0) have been found.The enthalpy and entropy changes for the stepwise complex formation equilibria are correlated by two linear compensative relationships with the same isoequilibrium temperature 50-51 °C.     

Structure–electrochemical properties correlations of some phenol derivatives investigated by electrochemical techniques

A series of 25 phenol derivative compounds having potential antioxidant capacity were studied by cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammetry, in order to estimate the electrochemical parameters of the redox process occurring at the graphite electrode. A correlation between the structure of phenol derivatives, the peak potential, the HOMO–LUMO gap and their antioxidant activity lead to a qualitative classification of the studied compounds as a function of the increase of their antioxidant capacity.     

Exploring Charged Polymeric Cyclodextrins for Biomedical Applications

Over the years, cyclodextrin uses have been widely reviewed and their proprieties provide a very attractive approach in different biomedical applications. Cyclodextrins, due to their characteristics, are used to transport drugs and have also been studied as molecular chaperones with potential application in protein misfolding diseases. In this study, we designed cyclodextrin polymers containing different contents of β- or γ-cyclodextrin, and a different number of guanidinium positive charges. This allowed exploration of the influence of the charge in delivering a drug and the effect in the protein anti-aggregant ability. The polymers inhibit Amiloid β peptide aggregation; such an ability is modulated by both the type of CyD cavity and the number of charges. We also explored the effect of the new polymers as drug carriers. We tested the Doxorubicin toxicity in different cell lines, A2780, A549, MDA-MB-231 in the presence of the polymers. Data show that the polymers based on γ-cyclodextrin modified the cytotoxicity of doxorubicin in the A2780 cell line.
