Phenoxy herbicidal ammonium ionic liquids

Ammonium ionic liquids with the 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetate anion were synthesized and characterized. Physicochemical properties, such as thermal stability, phase transition temperatures, viscosity, density, refractive index, as well as surface activity and herbicidal activity were determined. Improved physicochemical properties suggest a reduced environmental impact of newly formed group of herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs). HILs with a longer substituent can be characterized with better herbicidal activity in comparison with commercial products.     

The Matsumoto–Yor Property and Its Converse on Symmetric Cones

The Matsumoto–Yor (MY) property of the generalized inverse Gaussian and gamma distributions has many generalizations. As was observed in Letac and Weso?owski (Ann Probab 28:1371–1383, 2000), the natural framework for the multivariate MY property is symmetric cones; however, they prove their results for the cone of symmetric positive definite real matrices only. In this paper, we prove the converse to the symmetric cone-variate MY property, which extends some earlier results. The smoothness assumption for the densities of respective variables is reduced to continuity only. This enhancement was possible due to the new solution of a related functional equation for real functions defined on symmetric cones.     

Limit theorems for random walks

We consider a random walk $S_{\tau }$ which is obtained from the simple random walk $S$ by a discrete time version of Bochner’s subordination. We prove that under certain conditions on the subordinator $\tau$ appropriately scaled random walk $S_{\tau }$ converges in the Skorohod space to the symmetric $\alpha$-stable process $B^{\alpha }$. We also prove asymptotic formula for the transition function of $S_{\tau }$ similar to the Pólya’s asymptotic formula for $B^{\alpha }$.     

The Potential Effects of Phytoestrogens: The Role in Neuroprotection

Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring non-steroidal phenolic plant compounds. Their structure is similar to 17-β-estradiol, the main female sex hormone. This review offers a concise summary of the current literature on several potential health benefits of phytoestrogens, mainly their neuroprotective effect. Phytoestrogens lower the risk of menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis, as well as cardiovascular disease. They also reduce the risk of brain disease. The effects of phytoestrogens and their derivatives on cancer are mainly due to the inhibition of estrogen synthesis and metabolism, leading to antiangiogenic, antimetastatic, and epigenetic effects. The brain controls the secretion of estrogen (hypothalamus-pituitary-gonads axis). However, it has not been unequivocally established whether estrogen therapy has a neuroprotective effect on brain function. The neuroprotective effects of phytoestrogens seem to be related to both their antioxidant properties and interaction with the estrogen receptor. The possible effects of phytoestrogens on the thyroid cause some concern; nevertheless, generally, no serious side effects have been reported, and these compounds can be recommended as health-promoting food components or supplements.     

Phenanthriporphyrin: An Antiaromatic Aceneporphyrinoid as a Ligand for a Hypervalent Organophosphorus(V) Moiety

The incorporation of a phenanthrene moiety into a porphyrin framework results in the formation of a hybrid macrocycle—phenanthriporphyrin—merging the structural features of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and porphyrins. An antiaromatic aceneporphyrinoid, adopting the trianionic {CCNN} core, is suitable for the incorporation of a phosphorus(V) center to form a hypervalent organophosphorus(V) derivative.     

Calorimetry in testing waste materials from the brown coal combustion

The calorimetric measurements were applied in testing the wastes collected from different furnaces in electric power plants as materials to be used in civil engineering. The fly ash materials were collected from two power stations based on different brown coal deposits and working with conventional and fluidized bed installation. The reactivity of high calcium fly ash from sub-bituminous coal combustion has been proved in calorimetric, conductometric, chemical shrinkage, and rheological measurements before their practical implementation on larger scale. Highly soluble components of fly ash contribute to the hydration products and structure formation, followed by setting and hardening of fly ash–cement mixture. These results have been the base of research project aimed in the innovative solutions dealing with the management of deposits of wastes generated as a result of coal combustion. The standardization and potential use on larger scale of these materials, necessary from the environmental point of view, seems to be the question of nearest future.     

Green synthesis and antibacterial effects of aqueous colloidal solutions of silver nanoparticles using clove eugenol

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using clove extract (CE). Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed the morphology of the metallic Ag nanoparticles obtained via the clove extract synthesis (Ag NPs‐CE), which had a uniform distribution and average sizes varying from 10 nm to 100 nm. Fourier transform infra‐red (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that clove eugenol acts as a capping and reducing agent being adsorbed on the surface of Ag NPs‐CE, enabling their reduction from Ag⁺ and preventing their agglomeration. Formation of the Ag⁰ structure is also confirmed in the FTIR spectrum by the presence in the Ag NPs‐CE sample of the –C=O and –C=C vibrations at wavenumbers 1600 and 2915 cm^‐1, respectively. Antibacterial and antifungal tests using three strains of bacteria and one fungi strain showed that the Ag NPs‐CE performed better compared to pure clove extract (CE) sample.
