Phase rotation scheme of laser-produced ions for reduction of the energy spread

In order to widely spread out particle beams utilized in cancer therapy, laser-produced ions are developed as the injection beam for an ion synchrotron dedicated for cancer therapy. Such a laser ion source is expected to contribute largely to the realization of compactness of the size and low cost of the cancer therapy accelerator. The energy spectrum of the laser-produced ions, however, has no peak, but their intensities decrease exponentially according to the increase of the energy. For the purpose of modifying such a situation, we have proposed a scheme to rotate the beam in the longitudinal phase space with the use of the RF electric field, which is phase-adjusted with the pulse laser. We aim for a reduction of the energy spread of ± 5% selected by an energy analyzer and slits to ±1% by such phase rotation. For this purpose, a quarter wavelength resonator with two gaps with the same resonant frequency as the source laser has already been fabricated, together with its RF power source. The above phase rotation system and its recent experimental realization are presented.     

Reaction of 4-nitro-1,2-phenylenedl4mine with 1-(4-R-phenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)propenones

By the reaction of 4-nitro-1,2 phenylenediamine with 1-(p-R-phenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)propenones, Michael adducts with a 1:2 composition have been obtained. A stagewise scheme is proposed for the formation of these compounds. The structure of one of the products has been established by means of x-ray structure analysis.Deceased     

Preparation of polymethyl methacrylate with well-controlled stereoregularity by anionic polymerization in an ionic liquid solvent

This study investigates the effect of ionic liquids (ILs) on the anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), an isotactic polymer, is prepared by anionic polymerization at a high reaction temperature with an IL that acts as both solvent and additive. The most plausible reaction mechanism is determined using ¹H NMR and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrostatic interaction between MMA and the IL increases the apparent steric hindrance in MMA, resulting in the isotactic PMMA.     

Characterization of preformed plasmas with an interferometer for ultra-short high-intensity laser-plasma interactions

The evolution of an Al preformed plasma produced by a prepulse was observed before and after the arrival of the main pulse by an interferometer using a femtosecond probe pulse. A central density depression due to the ponderomotive force of the main laser pulse in the preformed plasma with a 100 m scale length was clearly visible after the main pulse irradiation at an intensity of 5×10¹⁶ W/cm². The temporal profiles of the prepulse, characterized by a cross-correlation in conjunction with a precise density profile measurement by an interferometer, contribute to the better understanding of femtosecond laser-matter interactions. Development of a two-color interferometer for observing wide range electron density profiles with a femtosecond time resolution

A two-color interferometer for preformed plasma characterization is developed. We observe the electron density distribution of preformed plasmas on a 5 μm-thick copper target irradiated with a high-intensity Ti:sapphire laser. The two-color interferometer extended the observable electron density region using a fundamental (800 nm) probe beam to cover the lower density region and a second harmonic (400 nm) probe beam to cover the higher density region, simultaneously. This characterization of the electron density distribution of preformed plasmas with femtosecond time resolution significantly contributes to the understanding of high-intensity laser–thin-foil interactions during high-energy electron, ion, and X-ray generation. Continuous hydrogenation reactions in a tube reactor packed with Pd/C

Continuous flow of the substrate solution and hydrogen gas through a tube reactor packed with Pd/C catalyst brings about a highly reactive and efficient hydrogenation system, which converts 4-cyanobenzaldehyde to the benzyl alcohol derivatives at 25 degrees C, and at 90 degrees C, the cyano group becomes reduced to give the corresponding amine and toluene derivatives within 2 min.     

Proton acceleration to 40 MeV using a high intensity, high contrast optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification/Ti:sapphire hybrid laser system

Using a high-contrast (10(10):1) and high-intensity (10(21) W/cm(2)) laser pulse with the duration of 40 fs from an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification/Ti:sapphire laser, a 40 MeV proton bunch is obtained, which is a record for laser pulse with energy less than 10 J. The efficiency for generation of protons with kinetic energy above 15 MeV is 0.1%.     

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of a Stereogenic Curved Paraphenylene Anchoring a Chiral Binaphthyl in Solution and Solid State

A curved stereogenic [6]paraphenylene ([6]PP), anchoring a chiral binaphthyl scaffold at 7,7’-positions, was prepared and investigated for its properties as a solid-state circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) dye. X-ray analysis revealed a helically twisted structure of PP units induced by axial chirality of binaphthyl framework. The curved [6]PP exhibits fluorescence in powder and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film as well as solution. A significant increase in quantum yield was observed for a non-fluid PMMA film owing the suppression of the molecular motion. The g_CPL values of the dye in solution and as PMMA film were almost the same (4.3–4.4×10⁻³) and lager than that in powder. TD-DFT calculations in the excited state suggest that the exciton can be delocalized into a twisted PP unit to produce a larger magnetic transition dipole moment.
