The r-mean curvature and rigidity of compact hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space

Diborylated Magnesium Anthracene as Precursor for B2H5−‐Bridged 9,10‐Dihydroanthracene

9,10‐(Bpin)₂‐anthracene ( 3 , HBpin=pinacolborane) was synthesized from 9,10‐dibromoanthracene in a stepwise lithiation/borylation sequence. The reaction of 3 with highly activated magnesium furnished the diborylated magnesium anthracene 4 , which was quenched in situ with ethereal HCl to yield cis‐9,10‐(Bpin)₂‐DHA (cis‐ 5 , DHA=9,10‐dihydroanthracene). Compound cis‐ 5 , in turn, can be reduced with Li[AlH₄] in THF to give its diborate Li₂[cis‐9,10‐(BH₃)₂‐DHA] (Li₂[cis‐ 6 ]). In the crystal lattice, the THF solvate Li₂[cis‐ 6 ] ? 3 THF establishes a dimeric structure with Li‐(μ‐H)‐B coordination modes. Hydride abstraction from Li₂[cis‐ 6 ] with Me₃SiCl yields the B?H?B‐bridged DHA Li[ 7 ]. This product can also be viewed as a unique cyclic B₂H₇^? derivative with a hydrocarbon backbone. Treatment of Li₂[cis‐ 6 ] with the stronger hydride abstracting agent Me₃SiOTf (HOTf=trifluoromethanesulfonic acid) in THF affords the THF diadduct of cis‐9,10‐(BH(OTf))₂‐DHA.     

1,2,4,5-Tetrakis(tetramethylguanidino)-3,6-diethynyl-benzenes: Fluorescent Probes,Redox-Active Ligands and Strong Organic Electron Donors

In this work, the change of reactivity induced by the introduction of two para-ethynyl substituents (CCSi(iPr)₃ or CCH) to the organic electron-donor 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(tetramethylguanidino)-benzene is evaluated. The redox-properties and redox-state dependent fluorescence are evaluated, and dinuclear Cu^I and Cu^II complexes synthesized. The Lewis-acidic B(C₆F₅)₃ substitutes the proton of the ethynyl −CCH groups to give new anionic −CCB(C₆F₅)₃⁻ substituents, leading eventually to a novel dianionic strong electron donor in its diprotonated form. Its two-electron oxidation with dioxygen in the presence of a copper catalyst yields the first redox-active guanidine that is neutral (instead of cationic) in its oxidized form.     

Hyperpolarization of Amino Acids in Water Utilizing Parahydrogen on a Rhodium Nanocatalyst

NMR offers many possibilities in chemical analysis, structural investigations, and medical diagnostics. Although it is broadly used, one of NMR spectroscopies main drawbacks is low sensitivity. Hyperpolarization techniques enhance NMR signals by more than four orders of magnitude allowing the design of new contrast agents. Parahydrogen induced polarization that utilizes the para-hydrogen's singlet state to create enhanced signals is of particular interest since it allows to produce molecular imaging agents within seconds. Herein, we present a strategy for signal enhancement of the carbonyl ¹³C in amino acids by using parahydrogen, as demonstrated for glycine and alanine. Importantly, the hyperpolarization step is carried out in water and chemically unmodified canonical amino acids are obtained. Our approach thus offers a high degree of biocompatibility, which is crucial for further application. The rapid sample hyperpolarization (within seconds) may enable the continuous production of biologically useful probes, such as metabolic contrast agents or probes for structural biology.
