Synthesis of monodisperse polymer suspensions with a narrow particle size distribution in the presence of water-insoluble triple block copolymers of polypropylene oxide and polyethylene oxide (pluronics)

The colloidal chemical properties of triple block copolymers of polypropylene oxide and polyethylene oxide (pluronics of various structures) were studied in comparison. All of them are shown to be surfactants but differ in interfacial tension, surface activity, surface area occupied in the adsorption layer, and adsorption layer thickness. The kinetic regularities of polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate were studied. The particle diameters and their size distribution were determined. Distinctions in the kinetic regularities of polymerization are shown: the shape of the conversion—time curves (for the duration of the initial and stationary stages of polymerization) and the dependences of the diameter on the surfactant concentration and monomer to water volume ratio. In the presence of the water-insoluble pluronics, the mechanism of formation of polymer—monomer particles and interfacial layer on the surface differs from that when using water-soluble surfactants, which makes it possible to distinguish these processes into an independent type of heterophase polymerization.

Exploring the performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises through the credit crunch

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are major contributors to most western economies. They are often supported by government policies, and in the UK the government encourages banks to lend to them. It is generally believed that the credit crunch has had an impact on the performance of SMEs. This study looks at the impact of the crunch using large samples from 2007 through to 2010. It looks at performance by region, age and industrial sector (SIC code). It then proceeds to explore the modelling of default over the years, with a focus on young businesses. It was found that there is a degree of stability within the models, though the level of default varies across years. Young businesses, as has been found before, are shown to be more vulnerable.     

Fourier transform IR spectroscopic study of substituent effect in aromatic amino acids on the zwitterion–neutral molecule tautomeric equilibrium

Four aromatic amino acids (p-aminobenzoic, 4,6-diaminoisophthalic, o-aminobenzoic, and methylene-bis-anthranilic) were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. The first two molecules were found to exist in the solid phase exclusively in neutral form and the latter two in coexisting neutral and ionic forms. The shift of the tautomeric equilibrium from neutral molecule to zwitterion is determined by the character of substitution, molecular conformation, and the possibility of noncovalent bonds formed between the functional groups. The separation of charges becomes possible only if the conformers of the molecule include a structure with an OH….N intramolecular hydrogen bond. The proton is completely transferred from the acid group to the amino group when the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds can stabilize the formed zwitterion. Otherwise, uncharged complexes with different degrees of proton transfer to the amino group are formed.
