Memory effects and glassy behavior have been repeatedly observed in disordered nematic liquid crystals but the connection between these effects and the system topology remained unrevealed. We present an analysis of the local and global topology of the nematic ordering in the presence of quenched disorder and we show that nematics with quenched disorder can be mapped into a system of pinned defect lines and that the memory of the system stems from the pinning of these strings.  相似文献

Surface-supported arrays of Fe(4)-type Single-Molecule Magnets retain a memory effect and are of current interest in the frame of molecule-based information storage and spintronics. To reveal the spin structure of [Fe(4)(L)(2)(dpm)(6)] (1) on Au, an isomorphous compound [Fe(3)Cr(L)(2)(dpm)(6)] was synthesized and structurally and magnetically characterized (H(3)L is tripodal ligand 11-(acetylthio)-2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)undecan-1-ol and Hdpm is dipivaloylmethane). The new complex contains a central Cr(3+) ion and has a S = 6 ground state as opposed to S = 5 in 1. Low-temperature X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism studies at Fe- and Cr-L(2,3) edges revealed that the antiparallel alignment between Fe and Cr spins is preserved on surfaces. Moreover, the different Fe-L(2,3) spectral features found in the homo- and heterometallic species disclose the opposing contribution of the central Fe(3+) ion in the former compound, proving that its ferrimagnetic spin structure is retained on surfaces.  相似文献

Summary A procedure for the simultaneous quantitation of Al(III) and Cr(III) ions by reversed-phase HPLC, after pre-column complexation with 8-hydroxyquinoline, is described. The deconvolution of the partially overlapped peaks was by the Kalman filter method which yielded accurate and precise results. Background removal from the chromatograms was by a new approach employing cubic splines as interpolators between the peak valleys. Finally, it is shown that the Kalman filter deconvolution, after subtraction of the background by cubic spline interpolation, allowed quantitation of Al(III) and Cr(III) down to 25 ppb for each metal. These concentrations were not detectable by conventional integration methods due to a very low signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

A new application is described of the on-line high-performance liquid chromatography/positive and negative ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI(+/–)-MS) to the identification of tetrapyrrolic compounds in sediment samples containing complex mixtures of natural pigments and their diagenetic products. The method relies on the production of radical anions in order to determine the molecular masses of the molecules which yield abundant fragment ions when analyzed in the positive mode. This approach allows to verify the occurrence of coeluting components by examining their negative ion spectra and to complete their identification on the basis of their fragment ions produced in the positive ion spectra. The properties of mixtures of two polysaccharides, arabinogalactan (AG) and hyaluronic acid (HA), were investigated in solution by the measurement of diffusion coefficients D of water protons by DOSY (Diffusion Ordered SpectroscopY), by the determination of viscosity and by the investigation of the affinity of a small molecule molecular probe versus AG/HA mixtures in the presence of bovine submaxillary mucin (BSM) by 1HNMR spectroscopy. Enhanced mucoadhesive properties, decreased mobility of water and decreased viscosity were observed at the increase of AG/HA ratio and of total concentration of AG. This unusual combination of properties can lead to more effective and long-lasting hydration of certain tissues (inflamed skin, dry eye corneal surface, etc.) and can be useful in the preparation of new formulations of cosmetics and of drug release systems, with the advantage of reducing the viscosity of the solutions.  相似文献
