Dynamic interaction of plasma flow with the hot boundary layer of a geomagnetic trap

The study of the interaction between collisionless plasma flow and stagnant plasma revealed the presence of an outer boundary layer at the border of a geomagnetic trap, where the super-Alfvén subsonic laminar flow changes over to the dynamic regime characterized by the formation of accelerated magnetosonic jets and decelerated Alfvén flows with characteristic relaxation times of 10–20 min. The nonlinear interaction of fluctuations in the initial flow with the waves reflected from an obstacle explains the observed flow chaotization. The Cherenkov resonance of the magnetosonic jet with the fluctuation beats between the boundary layer and the incoming flow is the possible mechanism of its formation. In the flow reference system, the incoming particles are accelerated by the electric fields at the border of boundary layer that arise self-consistently as a result of the preceding wave-particle interactions; the inertial drift of the incoming ions in a transverse electric field increasing toward the border explains quantitatively the observed ion acceleration. The magnetosonic jets may carry away downstream up to a half of the unperturbed flow momentum, and their dynamic pressure is an order of magnitude higher than the magnetic pressure at the obstacle border. The appearance of nonequilibrium jets and the boundary-layer fluctuations are synchronized by the magnetosonic oscillations of the incoming flow at frequencies of 1–2 mHz.     

Formation of highly substituted chiral cyclohexanone derivatives using a tandem conjugate addition/cyclisation

A tandem conjugate addition/cyclisation approach, that allows the synthesis of chiral highly substituted cyclohexanones and cyclohexenones, which is applicable to natural product syntheses has been developed.     

THE PHOTOTOXICITY OF 2,5-DIPHENYLOXAZOLE (POP) AND 1,4-BIS(5-PHENYLOXAZOL-2-YL)BENZENE (POPOP)

Abstract 2,5-Diphenyloxazole (POP) is widely used for the determination of radioactivity by scintillation counting. It has been found to be phototoxic to the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida utilis , to the first instar larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti , to the crustaceans Daphnia magna and Artemia salida , as well as to the eggs of Drosophila melanogaster . The related molecule 1,4-bis(5-phenyloxazol-2-yl)benzene (POPOP) is also phototoxic, but to a lesser degree. Both POP and POPOP can sensitize the formation of singlet oxygen.     

Synthesis of μ-hydrido-μ-phosphido heterotrimetal alkylidyne clusters: X-ray crystal structure of [Co2W(μ-H)(μ3-CMe)(μ-PPh2)(CO)6(η-C5H5]

Treatment of the μ-alkylidyne clusters [Fe₂W(μ₃-CC₆H₄Me-4)(μ-CO)- (CO)₈(η-C₅H₅)] and [Co₂W(μ₃-CMe)(CO)₈(η-C₅H₅)] with PPh₂H affords a series of new μ-phosphido-μ-hydrido alkylidyne complexes which undergo protonation with HBF₄·Et₂O to give cationic derivatives. The X-ray structure of [Co₂W(μ-H)(μ₃-CMe)(μ-PPh₂)(CO)₆(η-C₅H₅)] has been determined.     

BV estimates fail for most quasilinear hyperbolic systems in dimensions greater than one

We show that for most non-scalar systems of conservation laws in dimension greater than one, one does not have BV estimates of the form $$\begin{gathered} \parallel \overline V u(\overline t )\parallel _{T.V.} \leqq F(\parallel \overline V u(0)\parallel _{T.V.} ), \hfill \\ F \in C(\mathbb{R}),F(0) = 0,F Lipshitzean at 0, \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ even for smooth solutions close to constants. Analogous estimates forL ^p norms $$\parallel u(\overline t ) - \overline u \parallel _{L^p } \leqq F(\parallel u(0) - \overline u \parallel _{L^p } ),p \ne 2$$ withF as above are also false. In one dimension such estimates are the backbone of the existing theory.
