Structure Determination of a New Spirobicyclic Triterpenoid from Iris foetidissima

The novel iridal 10 has been isolated from rhizome extracts of Iris foetidissima. Its structure was established by spectroscopic methods and oxidative degradation. Final proof of the spirobicyclic nature of the compound – a new feature in the triterpenoid field – was afforded by the correlations observed in the 2D-HMBC- (¹H-detected multiple-bond heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence) spectrum. The possible biogenesis of this unusual compound is discussed.     

Study of Molecular Interactions in Binary Mixtures of Aniline with Carboxylic Acids at 293.15 K, 303.15 K and 313.15 K

Ultrasonic velocity, density, refractive index and viscosity of binary mixtures of aniline with acetic acid (AA) and propionic acid (PA) have been measured at 293.15, 303.15 and 313.15 K over the entire composition range. Further, the specific heat ratio, heat capacity, effective Debye temperature and pseudo-Gruensisen parameter and non-linearity parameter have been evaluated using ultrasonic absorption data. The deviation in isentropic compressibility, excess molar volume, excess intermolecular free length, deviation in molar refraction, deviation in viscosity, relaxation time, enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy of activation have been calculated from the experimental data and fitted with the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. A comparative study has also been made between experimental and theoretically calculated values of densities using the HBT and Rackett density models. Mixing rules for the prediction of refractive index, e.g. Lorentz-Lorenz (L-L), Eykmen (Eyk), Weiner (W), Heller (H), Gladstone-Dale (G-D), Arago-Biot (A-B) and Newton (N) have been applied to these binary mixtures.     

Destabilizing the interplay between miR-1275 and IGF2BPs by Tamarix articulata and quercetin in hepatocellular carcinoma

Insulin-like growth factor-2 binding proteins (IGF2BPs) are oncogenic RNA-binding proteins, highly up-regulated in HCC, and were recently validated as direct targets of the tumour suppressor miR-1275. It is worth noting that around 47% of FDA approved anticancer drugs are derived from plants. Modulation by miRNAs and their cellular signalling cascades could constitute new pathways by which these phytochemicals exert their effects. This study aimed to investigate the potential use of Tamarix articulata, quercetin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in HCC and how these phytochemicals could epigenetically modulate the IGF axis using their impact on miR-1275. T. articulata ethyl acetate fraction significantly reduced the viability of Huh-7 cells compared to control cells. Treatment with T. articulata ethyl acetate fraction, quercetin and EGCG significantly enhanced miR-1275, while suppressed IGF2BP1 and IGF2BP3 mRNA expression levels. In summary, T. articulata, quercetin and EGCG have important implications for HCC molecular-targeted therapy through destabilizing the interplay between miR-1275 and the IGF axis.     

Role of anti-inflammatory interventions in high-fat-diet-induced obesity

Lipotoxicity is defined as deposition of excess fat associated with an inflammatory response. Metabolomic analysis of fatty acids (FAs) can be a marker of silent inflammation. ω3-Enriched diet, celecoxib, and safranal may have a protective anti-inflammatory role. In this work, total FAs extracted from red blood cells and arachidonic acid-to-eicosapentaenoic acid (AA-to-EPA) ratios were assessed using GC–MS assay in single-ion monitoring mode. The study was conducted on 64 male rats divided into eight groups: I, controls; II, rats received high-fat diet (HFD), III, rats received ω-6-enriched HFD; IV, rats received ω-3-enriched HFD; V, rats received celecoxib with HFD; VI, rats received safranal with HFD; VII and VIII, rats received celecoxib and safranal with ω-3 HFD, respectively. GC–MS Gas chromatography Mass spectrometry was performed for analysis of fatty acid methyl ester. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to analyze serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) concentrations. A statistically significant decrease of AA-to-EPA ratio was observed in group VII when compared with the groups receiving HFDs. This group also showed the lowest serum IL-6 level and highest TGF-β1 level. In conclusion, ω3-enriched diet along with drugs (e.g. celecoxib) and herbal medications (e.g. safranal) may have an anti-inflammatory effect in lipotoxicity. GC–MS with single-ion monitoring is valid for the analysis of FAs.     

Vortex fluidic promoted Diels–Alder reactions in an aqueous medium

‘Soft energy’ provided within a thin film microfluidic platform, namely a vortex fluidic device (VFD), is effective in accelerating and promoting Diels–Alder reactions in the absence of any catalyst. Diels–Alder cycloadducts generated from different 9-substituted anthracenes and N-maleimides are formed in high yield in an aqueous medium using the confined mode of operation of the VFD.     

In Vitro and In Silico Screening and Characterization of Antimicrobial Napin Bioactive Protein in Brassica juncea and Moringa oleifera

The study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of Mustard (Brassica juncea) and Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extracts and coagulant protein for their potential application in water treatment. Bacterial cell aggregation and growth kinetics studies were employed for thirteen bacterial strains with different concentrations of leaf extracts and coagulant protein. Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MOS) and coagulant protein showed cell aggregation against ten bacterial strains, whereas leaf extract alone showed growth inhibition of five bacterial strains for up to 6 h and five bacterial strains for up to 3 h. Brassica juncea leaf extract (BJS) showed growth inhibition for up to 6 h, and three bacterial strains showed inhibition for up to 3 h. The highest inhibition concentration with 2.5 mg/mL was 19 mm, and furthermore, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) (0.5 mg/mL) and MBC (1.5 mg/mL) were determined to have a higher antibacterial effect for <3 KDa peptides. Based on LCMS analysis, napin was identified in both MOS and BJS; furthermore, the mode of action of napin peptide was determined on lipoprotein X complex (LpxC) and four-chained structured binding protein of bacterial type II topoisomerase (4PLB). The docking analysis has exhibited moderate to potent inhibition with a range of dock score −912.9 Kcal/mol. Thus, it possesses antibacterial-coagulant potential bioactive peptides present in the Moringa oleifera purified protein (MOP) and Brassica juncea purified protein (BJP) that could act as an effective antimicrobial agent to replace currently available antibiotics. The result implies that MOP and Brassica juncea purified coagulant (BJP) proteins may perform a wide degree of antibacterial functions against different pathogens.     

New sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of clomipramine-HCl in pure form and pharmaceutical preparations

A simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the assay of clomipramine-HCl is described. It has been found that clomipramine-HCl reacts with ammonium molybdate in acetic medium to give blue color product exhibiting maximum absorbance at 712 nm. The reaction is selective for clomipramine-HCl with 1 μg/mL as visual limit of detection. It provides a basis for a sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of clomipramine-HCl. The method obeys Beer’s Law from 0.001 to 0.250 mg/mL. The standard deviation does not exceed 0.005 mg/mL. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of clomipramine-HCl in pure form and pharmaceutical preparations. The quantitative assessment of tolerable amounts of possible interferants was also studied. The results are reproduced within ±1% and are in good agreement with those obtained by the standard procedure.     

Metal-free and base-free decarboxylation of substituted cinnamic acids in a deep eutectic solvent

Abstract

A metal-free and base-free strategy was developed in DES to synthesize styrenes for the first time by decarboxylation of cinnamic acid derivatives, which provided a renewable and cost efficiently protocol to access various styrenes including those with functional groups such as 4-vinylphenol and 1-chloro-4-vinylbenzene.     

Hermite-based Appell polynomials: Properties and applications

By employing certain operational methods, the authors introduce Hermite-based Appell polynomials. Some properties of Hermite-Appell polynomials are considered, which proved to be useful for the derivation of identities involving these polynomials. The possibility of extending this technique to introduce Hermite-based Sheffer polynomials (for example, Hermite-Laguerre and Hermite-Sister Celine's polynomials) is also investigated.     

Septic spline solutions of sixth-order boundary value problems

Septic spline is used for the numerical solution of the sixth-order linear, special case boundary value problem. End conditions for the definition of septic spline are derived, consistent with the sixth-order boundary value problem. The algorithm developed approximates the solution and their higher-order derivatives. The method has also been proved to be second-order convergent. Three examples are considered for the numerical illustrations of the method developed. The method developed in this paper is also compared with that developed in [M. El-Gamel, J.R. Cannon, J. Latour, A.I. Zayed, Sinc-Galerkin method for solving linear sixth order boundary-value problems, Mathematics of Computation 73, 247 (2003) 1325–1343], as well and is observed to be better.
