Constructing a new optical sensor for monitoring ammonia in water samples using bis(acetylacetoneethylendiamine)-tributylphosphin cobalt(III) tetraphenylborate complex-coated triacetylcellulose.

A new ammonia optical sensor was designed using bis(acetylacetoneethylendiamine)tributylphosphin cobalt(III) tetraphenylborate complex, coated on transparent triacetylcellulose film as membrane. The change in the absorbance of the optode at the maximum wavelength of 408 nm was related to ammonia concentration in aqueous samples. A buffer solution with a pH of 9 (sodium borate-HCl) was used. The optode was fully regenerated in pH 2. The linear dynamic range for determination of ammonia was 3.3 x 10(-4) to 6.9 x 10(-3) mol l(-1) with a detection limit of 5.0 x 10(-5) mol l(-1) and a response time range of 4 - 6 min. This membrane was successfully applied for determination of ammonia in drinking water.     

Volatile constituents of flowers and leaves of Anthemis hyalina

The chemical composition of the essential oils of the flowers and leaves of Anthemis hyalina were analyzed by GC and GC-MS for the first time. The oils were found to contain seventy-two components. cis-Chrysanthenyl acetate (14.9% and 17.8%), camphor (11.6% and 1.7%), terpinen-4-ol (8.3% and 1.2%), germacrene-D (5.1% and 2.1%), β-caryophyllene (4.1% and 5.4%), myrcene (3.6% and 16.9%), bicyclogermacrene (3.5% and 0.9%), α-pinene (2.3% and 4.1%), cis-β-ocimene (2.1% and 4.3%) and isospathulenol (0.4% and 4.3%) were found to be the major constituents of the oils of flowers and leaves respectively. Grignard-Addition an Pyridin-N-oxid

Addition of phenyl-, alkyl-, alkenyl- and alkinyl-Grignard reagents to pyridine-N-oxide in THF leads to 5-substituted (2Z, 4E)-pentadien-aldoximes 6 having (E) (syn)-configuration of the C, N-double bond. The unsaturated oximes are shown to arise through an electrocyclic ring opening reaction from the primary Grignard adducts 5 . These can be trapped by protonation at low temperature.     

Donor ligand, basal ligand and solvent effects on the equilibrium constants of triphenylphosphinecobalt(III) Schiff base complexes with phosphite ligands

The equilibrium constants and the thermodynamic parameters were spectrophotometrically measured for the 1:1 adduct formation of [Co(Salen)(PPh₃)]ClO₄.H₂O, and [Co(7,7′-Me₂Salen)(PPh₃)]ClO₄.H₂O as acceptors, with P(OR)₃ (R = methyl, ethyl, and i-propyl) as donors, in acetonitrile (CH₃CN) and dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvents at constant ionic strength (I = 0.1 M NaClO₄), and various temperatures (t = 10–50 °C). Our results revealed the following trends: stability of the cobalt(III) Schiff base complexes toward a given phosphite donor, [Co(7,7′-Me₂Salen)(PPh₃)]⁺ < [Co(Salen)(PPh₃)]⁺; binding of the donors (phosphites) toward a given cobalt(III) Schiff base complex, P(OEt)₃ > P(OMe)₃ > P(O-ⁱPr)₃; influence of solvent on the stability of a given cobalt(III) Schiff base complex toward a given phosphite donor, CH₃CN < DMF.     

A mild conversion of arylboronic acids and their pinacolyl boronate esters into phenols using hydroxylamine

Hydroxylamine was found to be a mild reagent for conversion of arylboronic acids and their pinacolyl boronate esters into phenols. This procedure works on most arylboronic acids at room temperature, yielding phenols in moderate to good yields, and efficiently on arylboronates also yielding phenols in good yields.     

Chemical Constituents of the Essential Oil of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Nepeta oxyodonta</Emphasis>

Water-distilled essential oil from the aerial parts of Nepeta oxyodonta Boiss. was analyzed by GC/MS for the first time. Fifty-eight components were identified. The major components were (E)-caryophyllene (12.6%), spathulenol (8.5%), β-bourbonene (8.1%), germacrene-D (7.4%), α-cadinol (7.3%), germacrene-D-4-ol (6.8%), T-cadinol (5.6%), and caryophyllene oxide (5.3%).__________Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 2, pp. 141–142, March–April, 2005.     

A selective modified carbon paste electrode for determination of cyanide using tetra-3,4-pyridinoporphyrazinatocobalt(II)

A chemically modified carbon paste electrode with 3,4-tetra pyridinoporphirazinatocobalt(II) (Co(3,4 tppa) was applied to the determination of free cyanide ion. The electrode has a linear range between 1.5 × 10⁻⁵ M and 1.0 × 10⁻² M with a Nernstian slope of 60 ± 1.5 mV/decade and its detection limit is 9 × 10⁻⁶ M. The response time of electrode is 5 min. The proposed electrode was applied successfully for the determination of cyanide in commercially available spring water. Some anions, such as SCN⁻, I⁻, Cl⁻, Br⁻ and oxalate that are usually serious interfering species for most of cyanide selective electrodes, did not have any interfering effect for this proposed electrode.     

Ru-catalyzed synthesis of substituted phthalides through C–H bond activation and functionalization

Synthesis of substituted phthalides through a ruthenium-catalyzed reaction of phthalic anhydrides with acrylates is described. The reaction proceeds via CH bond activation and leads to the formation of vinylated phthalides through a successive double vinylation accompanied by decarboxylation and annulation reactions.
