Determination of the optimal initial function and the parameters for nonlinear time-delay systems

This paper deals with dynamic systems described by nonlinear differential-difference equations of retarded type. The problem considered is to determine the initial function and certain system parameters which minimize a given cost functional. A computational method is presented and some convergence results are given. Numerical examples of linear and nonlinear systems are also included.     

Use of a bismuth ion-selective electrode for investigation of bismuth complexes of citric and malic acids

A bismuth ion-selective electrode has been used to determine the nature and stability of the complexes formed by bismuth with citric acid and malic acid, by measurement of the response of the electrode to different total bismuth concentrations at various combinations of pH and total ligand concentration. The values found were beta(2) = 3 x 10(13) for Bi(Cit)(2)(3-) and beta(3) = 8 x 10(9) for Bi(Mal)(2)(3-).     

Liquid-state mercury(II) ion-selective electrode based on N-(O,O-diisopropylthiophosphoryl)thiobenzamide

A liquid ion-exchange electrode containing a complex of mercury(II) with N-(O,O-diisopropylthiophosphoryl)thiobenzamide in carbon tetrachloride is described. The electrode shows excellent sensitivity and good selectivity. The slope of the calibration graph is 29.0 mV/pHg²⁺ in the pHg²⁺ in the pHg²⁺ range 2–15.2 in mercury(II) ion buffers. The electrode can be used for determination of 5 × 10^?5–10^?2 M Hg(II) in the presence of 10^?2 M Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Mn(II), Fe(III), Cr(III), Bi(III) or Al(III) ions and in the presence of 10^?3 M Ag(I) ions. It can bealso used for end-point detection in titrations with EDTA of 10^?3–10^?4 M mercury(II) at pH 2.     

On translations of subsets of the real line

In this paper we discuss various questions connected with translations of subsets of the real line. Most of these questions originate from W. Sierpinski. We discuss the number of translations a single subset of the reals may have. Later we discuss almost invariant subsets of Abelian groups.

     

Crystal-field levels in UBr3 determined by neutron spectroscopy

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed in UBr₃ in order to determine the crystal-field levels. Four transitions between the ground state and all excited states have been observed, thus the crystal-field level scheme could be unambigously assigned. The Russell-Saunders coupling scheme has been used to derive the crystal-field parameters which cannot be accounted for by a simple point charge calculation.     

Aerosol-assisted self-assembly of hybrid Layered Double Hydroxide particles into spherical architectures

Over the last decade, the use of nanocellulose in advanced technological applications has been promoted both due the excellent properties of this material in combination with its renewability. In this study, multilayered thin films composed of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), polyvinyl amine (PVAm) and silica nanoparticles were fabricated on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a layer-by-layer adsorption technique. The multilayer build-up was followed in situ by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, which indicated that the PVAm-SiO(2)-PVAm-NFC system adsorbs twice as much wet mass material compared to the PVAm-NFC system for the same number of bilayers. This is accompanied with a higher viscoelasticity for the PVAm-SiO(2)-PVAm-NFC system. Ellipsometry indicated a dry-state thickness of 2.2 and 3.4 nm per bilayer for the PVAm-NFC system and the PVAm-SiO(2)-PVAm-NFC system, respectively. Atomic force microscopy height images indicate that in both systems, a porous network structure is achieved. Young's modulus of these thin films was determined by the Strain-Induced Elastic Buckling Instability for Mechanical Measurements (SIEBIMM) technique. The Young's modulus of the PVAm/NFC films was doubled, from 1 to 2 GPa, upon incorporation of silica nanoparticles in the films. The introduction of the silica nanoparticles lowered the refractive index of the films, most probably due to an increased porosity of the films.     

Infrared and Raman Spectra of Solid Guanine Derivatives. 7-METHYLGUANINE, 9-METHYLGUANINE, 9-ETHYLGUANINE, 1,7-DIMETHYLGUANINE,and 1,9-DIMETHYLGUANINE.

The infrared and Raman spectra of 7-methylguanine, 9-methylguanine, 9-ethylguanine, 1,7-dimethylguanine, and 1,9-dimethylguanine in the solid state have been reported and discussed. Hydrogen bonds in these solid guanine derivatives bring about strong perturbations which are discussed in terms of structural data given by X-ray diffraction methods. The spectra of guanine and 9-methylguanine are compared with the spectra of the monomers isolated in low-temperature matrices.
