Determination of uranium and thorium isotopes in soil samples by coprecipitation

Summary The paper presents a procedure to prepare soil samples for U and Th isotope measurement by alpha-spectrometry after coprecipitation with LaF₃. In this procedure the reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) was performed by Zn metal in 4M HCl solution. The recoveries of chemical separation equal to e_U-chemistry = 78±4% for uranium and e_Th-chemistry = 82±4% for thorium. Canberra alpha-spectrometer was used with PIPS detectors of A-1200-37-AM Model of 1200 mm² active area. The counting efficiency of the measuring system equals to e_counting = 18% and the total efficiencies were e_U = e_counting ^.e_U-chemistry = 14.0±0.7% for uranium and e_Th = e_counting ^.e_Th-chemistry = 14.7±0.7% for thorium. The recoveries of chemical separation were rather high (about 80%), that leads to the use of a small weight of soil sample (about 0.5 g). The efficiencies were also stable, that allows analyzing the soil sample without using radiotracers. They are advantages of the sample preparation procedure of this work.     

Chemical isolation of element 106 from aqueous solutions according to model experiments with short-lived tungsten isotopes

The short-lived isotopes of W and their descendants have been isolated from the products of the bombardment of¹⁴⁴Sm with²⁴Mg by a fast continuous ion-exchange method, using HF solution media. The feasibility of this method for isolation of element 106 is discussed.     

Synthesis and orientation study of a magnetically aligned liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite

A high magnetic field of 5 T was used to fabricate a magnetically aligned, optically anisotropic, liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite. The aligned mesophase was fixed by photoinitiated free‐radical polymerization. From an examination of polarized optical micrographs and an X‐ray diffraction study, a high degree of orientation of 0.70 was observed for the composite with a higher liquid‐crystalline chitin concentration (10.70 wt %); the orientation was reduced with a decreased chitin concentration at a given acrylic acid concentration. The X‐ray data for the developed composite showed a uniplanar orientation for the chitin crystallites, with its molecular long axes perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fast and continuous chemical isolation of short-lived isotopes of Hf,Ta and W as homologs of elements 104, 105 and 106

Some short-lived isotopes of Hf, Ta and W, synthesized at the U-400 cyclotron of JINR-Dubna, have been isolated using a previously elaborated fast continuous method of chemical isolation of element 104 from nuclear reaction products. The products were transported by a NaCl aerosol jet, from the irradiated targets to a separation device in which Hf, Ta and W were isolated by using three coupled ion-exchange columns.     

Force field and 13C-NMR investigations of substituted cyclopentanes. A concept for the adaption of 13C NMR shifts to varying torsional arrangements in flexible conformers

MM2 Exploration of the conformational space for methylcyclopentane, in contrast to cyclopentanone yields more and flatter minima than known previously. Calculations of cyclopentanes with substituents X = F, Cl, CHMe₂, and CMe₃ with two stable conformations indicate <2° torsional angle changes with the different substituents. Cyclopentanes bearing not more than 2 substituents can accommodate all groups in pseudoequatorial positions without changing the basic envelope and twist chair geometries significantly. A model for ¹³C-shift calculation is proposed in which shift increments for the different torsional arrangements are obtained by linear interpolation between corresponding cyclohexane values. After correction for the nonequivalent carbon shifts in the hydrocarbon itself, again using the linear interpolation, a significant improvement of the shift correlations is observed. For disubstituted cyclopentanes these predict the shifts within ± 1.7 ppm with Me, CHMe₂, CMe₃, Cl, Br and OH as substituents. Configurational assignments are difficult with 1,3-di-substituted cyclopentanes, but straightforward with 1,2-di- and trisubstituted compounds. Thus, due to the presence of smaller torsional angles between, e.g. diequatorial vicinal substituents in the 1,2- cis series as compared to the trans compounds, the latter show deshielding, particularly at C2, by 1–4 ppm. Several epimers are stereo-selectively prepared by suitable ketone reduction and displacement methods.     

Neosappanone A, a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory dimeric methanodibenzoxocinone with a new carbon skeleton from Caesalpinia sappan

A novel dimeric methanodibenzoxocinone, named neosappanone A (1), possessing a unique unprecedented novel carbon framework, has been isolated from the heartwood of Caesalpinia sappan L. of Vietnam, and its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Neosappanone A (1) competitively inhibited xanthine oxidase in a concentration-dependent manner (IC₅₀, 29.7 μM; K_i, 16.3 μM).     

Synthesis of novel tryptamine and β-carboline derivatives via palladium-catalyzed reaction of bromotryptamine with organic boronic acids

New tryptamine 5, 7 and β-carboline derivatives 3 were preparated by palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction of 5-bromotryptamine 1 with aryl boronic acids. Dedicated to Professor András Lipták on his 70^th birthday.     

Domino "[3+3]-cyclization-homo-Michael" reactions of 1,3-bissilyl enol ethers with 1,1-diacylcyclopropanes

The Lewis acid mediated domino "[3+3]-cyclization-homo-Michael" reaction of 1,3-bissilyl enol ethers with 1,1-diacylcyclopropanes allows an efficient one-pot synthesis of functionalized salicylates containing a halogenated side chain. A great variety of substitution patterns could be realized by variation of the starting materials and of the Lewis acid. The mechanism of the domino process was studied.
