Intercepted-Knoevenagel condensation for the synthesis of unsymmetrical fused-tricyclic 4H-pyrans

4H-Pyrans (4H-Pys) and 1,4-dihydropyridines (1,4-DHPs) are important classes of heterocyclic scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. Herein, an indium(III)-catalyzed one-pot domino reaction for the synthesis of highly functionalized 4H-Pys, and a model of 1,4-DHP is reported. This alternative approach to the challenging Hantzsch 4-component reaction enables the synthesis of fused-tricyclic heterocycles, and the mechanistic studies underline the importance of an intercepted-Knoevenagel adduct to achieve higher chemoselectivity towards these types of unsymmetrical heterocycles.     

Full-wave modeling of piezoelectric transducers for SAW acousto-optical interactions

In this paper we present an accurate and efficient numerical method for a rigorous full-wave analysis of interdigital transducers (IDT) for the excitation of surface acoustic waves on the piezoelectric substrate of acousto-optical devices. The problem is formulated in terms of an integral equation that is solved by the method of moments. The transducer input admittance and the power coupling factors to both surface and bulk waves are computed. Numerical results for some configurations of X-Y LiNbO₃ IDT for acousto-optic applications are in very good agreement with measured data. It is pointed out that bulk wave excitation may be a serious limitation in the design of efficient, wide band transducers for acousto-optical devices.     

Thermal degradation of elastomeric vulcanized poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVM): Chemical and kinetic investigations

The thermal degradation of vulcanized elastomeric poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVM) in inert and oxidative conditions was investigated. Based on the characterization of both condensed and gas phases during the thermal degradation it was possible to propose a reaction scheme of the EVM degradation. In addition, the determination of the kinetic parameters completed the chemical investigations. The thermo-oxidation of vulcanized EVM occurs in five steps, including the cleavage of some cross-linking bonds, the catalytic deacetylation forming polyenes and a charring step, followed by the decomposition and oxidation of the char. It appeared that the curing, and thus the cross-linking nodes, enhances the thermal stability of EVM by favouring the charring. On the other hand the pyrolysis of the polymer is quite not influenced by the vulcanization.     

Front progression in the East model

The East model is a one-dimensional, non-attractive interacting particle system with Glauber dynamics, in which a flip is prohibited at a site x$x$ if the right neighbour x+1$x+1$ is occupied. Starting from a configuration entirely occupied on the left half-line, we prove a law of large numbers for the position of the left-most zero (the front), as well as ergodicity of the process seen from the front. For want of attractiveness, the one-dimensional shape theorem is not derived by the usual coupling arguments, but instead by quantifying the local relaxation to the non-equilibrium invariant measure for the process seen from the front. This is the first proof of a shape theorem for a kinetically constrained spin model.     

Anisotropic surface relief diffraction gratings under arbitrary plane wave incidence

A modal method is used for the analysis under oblique incidence of a diffraction grating made of anisotropic material. The problem is studied viewing the structure as the cascade of junctions between periodic arrays of anisotropic slab waveguides with the same period and different heights. This diffraction problem is formulated in terms of an integral equation that enforces the continuity of the transverse magnetic field at the junction. The unknown is the transverse electric field at the junction. It is possible to use also another formulation, where the role of the two fields is exchanged. The kernels of these equations are the relevant Green's functions, which are expressed in terms of eigenfunction expansions. The determination of the modes of the various regions composed of arrays of anisotropic dielectric slabs has been carried out by the method of spectral elements, whereby the field components are represented in a polynomial basis and the original differential eigenvalue problem is converted into an algebraic one. The integral equation is solved numerically by the method of moments and each junction is characterized by its generalized scattering matrix (GSM). Finally, the diffraction efficiencies of the grating are obtained by combining the various GSM's.     

Analysis of piezoelectric strip waveguides based on the effective index and pseudospectral element methods

Integrated acousto-optical circuits in LiNbO3 are attractive devices for applications especially in advanced WDM systems. In order to increase the scale of integration and to reduce the RF driving power of these devices, one promising approach is to use acoustical waveguides with smaller lateral dimensions. In this paper the combination of a pseudospectral elements method (PSEM) and an effective index method (EIM) for the analysis of film-loaded surface acoustic waveguides (SAWG's) is presented. Numerical results demonstrate the exponential rate of convergence of the PSEM and agree with the computations performed via the transverse resonance technique. Due to the exponential rate of convergence of the PSEM and to a mapping transformation in the substrate, the piezoelectric problem in the depth direction of the structures is evaluated by a low number of Legendre polynomials. The method is applied to the analysis of several layered SAWG's of practical interest for AO devices, such as metal/SiO2/X - YLiNbO3, in which the metal is either Au, Al, In, or Ti.     

Use,analysis, and regulation of pesticides in natural extracts,essential oils,concretes, and absolutes

Natural extracts used by the fragrance and cosmetics industries, namely essential oils, concretes, resinoids, and absolutes, are produced from natural raw materials. These are often cultivated by use of monoculture techniques that involve the use of different classes of xenobiotica, including pesticides. Because of these pesticides’ potential effect on public health and the environment, laws regarding permitted residual levels of pesticides used in cultivation of raw materials for fragrance and cosmetic products are expected to become stricter. The purpose of this review is to present and classify pesticides commonly used in the cultivation of these natural raw materials. We will summarize the most recent regulations, and discuss publications on detection of pesticides via chemical analysis of raw natural extracts. Advances in analytical chemistry for identification and quantification of pesticides will be presented, including both sample preparation and modern separation and detection techniques, and examples of the identification and quantification of individual pesticides present in natural extracts, for example essential oils, will be provided.

Spontaneous emission evaluation in a photonic bandgap microcavity

This work is concerned with an electromagnetic model of a microresonator built in a dielectric periodical structure, with the purpose to achieve the control of spontaneous emission. The aim is to enhance the spontaneous emission into the lasing mode and to reduce it into the continuous spectrum of the nonlasing modes. An example of design of the microcavity structure is presented, together with the evaluation of the β-factor for various operating conditions.
