Reaction of C3 and C4 ketoses with alkenals and alkenones in water

Treatment of 1,3-dihydroxyacetone and acrolein with aqueous KOH gave a tetrahydrofuran derivative, 1,4-dihydroxy-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane, in 80% yield. Similarly, 6-alkyl substituted 1,4-dihydroxy-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanes were obtained by reaction of 1,3-dihydroxyacetone with various α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. In the cases of long chain alkenals, the reaction was effectively accelerated in the presence of organic co-solvent. On the other hand, the corresponding tricyclic products were synthesized by reaction of 1,3-dihydroxyacetone with cyclic enones, such as 2-cyclopentenone and 2-cyclohexenone. This method was successfully applied to the reaction of a tetrulose in the absence of any protecting groups.     

Synthesis and structure-activity relationships of N-substituted 2-[(2-imidazolylsulfinyl)methyl]anilines as a new class of gastric H+/K(+)-ATPase inhibitors.

A series of N-substituted 2-[(2-imidazolylsulfinyl)methyl]anilines (3) was synthesized and evaluated for its biological activity against gastric H+/K(+)-ATPase prepared from rabbit stomach and gastric acid secretions in Heidenhain pouch dogs. Monoalkyl substituents on the nitrogen atom of the aniline moiety markedly inhibited the enzyme activity to the same degree as omeprazole, a representative H+/K(+)-ATPase inhibitor. Most of these compounds, administered at 3 mg/kg i.v. inhibited histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion. The inhibitory activity of these derivatives on the enzymes at pH 6.0 was more potent than that at pH 7.4, and was distinctly correlated to stability in aqueous solution at pH 5.0.     

Photo-induced evolution of copper sheets from cluster molecules and its application to photolithographic copper patterning

UV photoexcitation of (t-butylethynyl copper)₂₄ cluster films induces segregation of the crystals into metallic and organic phases and leads to evolve the metallic sheets sandwiched by organic polymers. The growth of the metallic crystals in the plane of the photo-electromagnetic field is attributed due to plasmon-plasmon interaction among nanoparticles embedded in dielectric polymer matrices. The surface enhanced photochemical reaction of residual cluster molecules on the photon incident direction is expected to take an important role for joining the metal particles to produce a metallic sheet. We can apply this phenomenon for photolithographic copper pattern generation on a flexible base plate.     

Thermoanalytical characterization of carbon/carbon hybrid material, Apple Woodceramics

Woodceramics, a carbon/carbon composite of plant-originated carbon reinforced by glassy carbon from phenolic resin, was prepared from apple pomace at carbonizing temperatures of 1073 K (AWC800) and 1473 K (AWC1200), and characterized by thermoanalytical methods and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric (TG) showed complicated overlapping reactions similar to those of coal. The initial temperature of pyrolysis was obtained by fitting logistic functions to observed TG data. The results suggested that AWC1200 contained more volatile matter than AWC800. In an inert atmosphere, complicated devolatilization takes place. In an oxidizing atmosphere, thermal change occurs roughly in four steps: desorption of physically adsorbed matter; pyrolysis into aliphatic and aromatic fragments; ignition; combustion of char. The oxidation resistance of AWC1200 was superior to AWC800.     

Bis(5‐hydroxy‐2‐hydroxy­methyl‐4‐pyrone‐κ2O4,O5)bis(2‐hydroxy­methyl‐5‐oxido‐4‐pyrone‐κ2O4,O5)­calcium(II) tetrahydrate

In the title compound, [Ca(C₆H₅O₄)₂(C₆H₆O₄)₂]·4H₂O, which is a kojic acid–Ca²⁺ complex, the Ca atom is on a twofold axis and is octacoordinated by O atoms from four pyrone ligand mol­ecules. The hydroxyl and ketone O atoms of each ligand form a five‐membered chelate ring with the Ca atom. The crystal structure is stabilized by partial stacking and O—H?O hydrogen bonds.     

Percutaneous absorption of ketoprofen from acrylic gel patches containing d-limonene and ethanol as absorption enhancers.

The percutaneous absorption of ketoprofen (KPF) from gel patches containing d-limonene and ethanol was investigated in rats. Plasma levels of KPF varied with the kind of polymers which constitute the gel patch, and the highest level was observed when the copolymer of ethylacrylate (EA) and diethyleneglycolmethacrylate (DEGMA) was used as a vehicle. The amount of KPF permeating through the rat skin from the gel patch was well correlated with that of ethanol. Permeations were enhanced with increase in the amount of d-limonene distributed from the vehicle to the skin tissue. The amount of d-limonene accumulated in the skin varied greatly with the kind of polymers; the highest accumulation was observed with the EA-DEGMA copolymer, and decreased with increasing affinity of d-limonene to the polymers. The reason EA-DEGMA copolymer showed the highest percutaneous absorption of KPF from gel patches containing d-limonene may be the hydrophilic nature of this polymer which showed the lowest affinity to d-limonene.     

A novel synthesis of 2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐thieno[3,4‐b]pyrroles via ring transformation of cyclic sulfonium ylides by titanium(IV) chloride‐triethylamine system

A series of cyclic sulfonium ylides 4a‐h reacted with titanium( IV ) chloride in the presence of triethyl‐amine to give the corresponding fused 2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐thieno[3,4‐b]pyrroles 5a‐h , via a ring opening and recyclization. In contrast, treatment of compounds 4a, 4b, 4e and 4f with titanium(IV) chloride, triethy‐lamine and dimethylamine hydrochloride gave the corresponding thiophenes 6a, 6b, 6e and 6f . Furthermore, compounds 6a and 6b easily underwent cyclization with sodium hydride to afford the corresponding 5a and 5b .     

Synthesis and anti-HIV activity of 3-alkylamido-3-deoxy-betulinic acid derivatives

3-Alkylamido-3-deoxy-betulinic acids were synthesized and evaluated for anti-HIV activity as part of the structure-activity relationship study of the potent anti-HIV agent 3-O-(3',3'-dimethyl)-succinyl-betulinic acid (DSB) (2). 3Alpha-diglycorylamide-3-deoxy-betulinic acid demonstrated relatively potent anti-HIV activity (EC50 0.24 microm, TI 728). However, replacing the ester group at C-3 in 2 and its analogues with an amido group yielded inactive or much less potent compounds against HIV replication, indicating that the ester group at C-3 in 2-4 is essential for potent anti-HIV activity.
