TGF-β1 induction of the adenine nucleotide translocator 1 in astrocytes occurs through Smads and Sp1 transcription factors

Background  

The adenine nucleotide translocator 1 (Ant1) is an inner mitochondrial membrane protein involved with energy mobilization during oxidative phosphorylation. We recently showed that rodent Ant1 is upregulated by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) in reactive astrocytes following CNS injury. In the present study, we describe the molecular mechanisms by which TGF-β1 regulates Ant1 gene expression in cultured primary rodent astrocytes.     

Capillary electrophoresis of Cr(VI) reducer Arthrobacter oxydans

Rapid and effective separation of bacteria Arthrobacter oxydans was performed using capillary electrophoresis. For optimal separation of bacteria the influence of buffer concentration, pH and applied voltage were studied. It was found that the most appropriate conditions for electrophoretic mobility measurements are as follows: applied voltage 6-14 kV; buffer concentration 5-10 mM pH 6-8. At the stationary phase of growth there are always two main heterogeneous peaks. They are connected with the morphology of bacteria as well as with cell aggregation. The heterogeneity of samples may be explained by surface modifications of bacterial cells.     

Multiple nitrene insertions into metal-sulfur bonds of dithiocarbamate complexes: synthesis of sulfido-amido and zwitterionic tetraamido complexes

The iodine(III) reagent, PhI[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs, acts as a source of the nitrene fragment NTs, which undergoes facile insertion into the metal-sulfur bonds of a range of dithiocarbamate complexes. Addition of two equivalents of PhI=NTs to [M(S(2)CNR2)2] affords sulfido-amido complexes [M{SC(NR2)SNTs}2](M=Ni, Cu), which insert two further nitrene fragments to afford zwitterionic tetraamido complexes [M{TsNSC(NR2)SNTs}2](M=Co, Ni, Cu). Crystallographic studies have been carried out on both types of complex allowing possible resonance hydrids of the new ligand types to be assessed.     

Sequential Injection Photometric Determination of Molybdenum Using Organic Wetting Film Extraction

Wetting film extraction was combined with colorimetry to determine nanogram amounts of molybdenum(VI). The simple extraction procedure enhanced sensitivity and selectivity while maintaining a high sample throughput. Extraction and back extraction steps were exploited to exclude interference from the 31 metal species and 11 anions tested. In the first step, molybdenum(VI) was extracted into a toluene film as an ion paired complex. Molybdenum(VI) reacted with thiocyanate to form anionic molybdenum(V) and/or molybdenum(VI) thiocyanate complexes. The complexes were extracted into a toluene film containing tetraheptylammonium bromide as ion pairing reagent. The thiocyanate ligands were displaced by 1,5-diphenylcarbazone (DPC) to form a more intensely colored complex (λ_max= 540 nm). DPC was introduced in the back extraction solvent, methanol. The relative standard deviation was 2.5% for 50 ng ml⁻¹of molybdenum(VI) (n= 10) at a rate of 25 samples h⁻¹. The detection limit (3 × baseline noise) was 2.5 × 10⁻⁸M.     

Synthesis and properties of the double perovskites La2NiVO6, La2CoVO6, and La2CoTiO6

The double perovskites La₂CoVO₆, La₂CoTiO₆, and La₂NiVO₆, are described. Rietveld fitting of neutron and powder X-ray diffraction data show La₂NiVO₆ and La₂CoVO₆ to have a disordered arrangement of B-cations whereas La₂CoTiO₆ shows ordering of the B-cations (with ∼5% Co/Ti inversion). Curie-Weiss fits to the linear region of the 1/χ plots reveal Weiss temperatures of −107, −34.8, and 16.3 K for La₂CoVO₆, La₂CoTiO₆, and La₂NiVO₆, respectively, and magnetic transitions are observed. La₂CoTiO₆ prepared by our method differs from material prepared by lower-temperature routes. A simple antiferromagnetic spin model is consistent with the data for La₂CoTiO₆. These compounds are semiconductors with bandgaps of 0.41 (La₂CoVO₆), 1.02 (La₂CoTiO₆) and 0.45 eV (La₂NiVO₆).     

Thermal and mass spectrometric fragmentation of esters of deuterated long chain carboxylic acids

A method combining thermal fragmentation and mass spectrometry for the determination of the position of double bonds in an unsaturated ester is presented. The thermal fragmentation of methyl esters of deuterated long chain carboxylic acids yields a homologous series of olefins plus a homologous series of unsaturated esters. The positions of the deuterium atoms in the original ester are revealed by the deuterium content of its fragments as determined by mass spectrometry. Therefore, the positions of double bonds of a polyunsaturated acid can be determined by pyrolysis after saturation by deuterium. The structures of the unsaturated fragments are ascertained by mass spectrometric method, and the formation of the ion [M – 32] in the mass spectrometric fragmentation of unsaturated methyl esters is studied by means of deuterium labeling.     

Microporosity of a Guanidinium Organodisulfonate Hydrogen‐Bonded Framework

Guanidinium organosulfonates (GSs) are a large and well‐explored archetypal family of hydrogen‐bonded organic host frameworks that have, over the past 25 years, been regarded as nonporous. Reported here is the only example to date of a conventionally microporous GS host phase, namely guanidinium 1,4‐benzenedisulfonate ( p ‐G₂BDS ). p ‐G₂BDS is obtained from its acetone solvate, AcMe@ G₂BDS , by single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal (SC‐SC) desolvation, and exhibits a Type I low‐temperature/pressure N₂ sorption isotherm (SA_BET=408.7(2) m² g^?1, 77 K). SC‐SC sorption of N₂, CO₂, Xe, and AcMe by p ‐G₂BDS is explored under various conditions and X‐ray diffraction provides a measurement of the high‐pressure, room temperature Xe and CO₂ sorption isotherms. Though p ‐G₂BDS is formally metastable relative to the “collapsed”, nonporous polymorph, np ‐G₂BDS , a sample of p ‐G₂BDS survived for almost two decades under ambient conditions. np ‐G₂BDS reverts to zCO₂@ p ‐G₂BDS or yXe@ p ‐G₂BDS (y,z=variable) when pressure of CO₂ or Xe, respectively, is applied.
