Drinking waters generally contain variable amounts of radioactivity. Many radionuclides, like 40K and those belonging to the natural decay series of 238U, 235U and 232Th, are transferred to the water from the aquifer rocks by erosion and dissolution mechanisms.In recent years, a great interest arose towards the natural radioactivity in drinking water. The European Council Directive 98/83/EC, subsequently enforced in Italian law, pushed public authorities to organize tap water surveys. Parameter values for radioactivity levels in water are given, according to World Health Organization recommendations. Maximum concentration values for radon are separately proposed in a European Commission Recommendation.For this reason, during the latest years, the Regional Environment Protection Agency (ARPA) has been performing an extensive monitoring of tap waters in the Lombardia district of Italy. Natural radioactivity content was measured to check the compliance with recent European and Italian rules.Analyses were performed by an ultra-low level scintillation counter equipped with an alpha-beta discrimination device. Specifically arranged procedures, requiring quick and easy pre-treatments, allowed to measure gross alpha and beta activity, 222Rn, 226Ra, and uranium isotopes concentrations in a relatively short time. Subsequently, more complex procedures, involving radiochemical separation of radionuclides, are currently being studied for 210Pb, 210Po and 228Ra. Method performances were carefully tested by both internal validation procedures and international intercomparison exercises.These procedures have been employed for a wide range screening in the Lombardia district in Italy. Obtained results showed that in most cases gross alpha activity was lower than the parameter value given by the cited regulations. When these values were exceeded, a more detailed survey was planned: at present three of them, in the western and south-western part of Lombardia and in the city of Milan have been carried out. 相似文献

Coordination of 4'-(C6H4-p-X)-2,2':6',2'-terpyridines [X = NO2, NBu2, (E)-CH=CH-C6H4-p-NBu2, (E,E)-(CH=CH)2-C6H4-p-NMe2] to Zn(II), Ru(III), and Ir(III) metal centers induces a significant enhancement of the absolute value of the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response of the terpyridine, measured by means of both electric field induced second harmonic generation and solvatochromic methods. By varying the nature of the metal center, the enhanced second-order NLO response shifts from positive to negative. Such a shift is controlled by electronic charge-transfer transitions, such as metal-to-ligand or ligand-to-metal transitions, in addition to the intraligand charge transfer. The enhancement generated by coordination is also controlled by the chelation effect and by fine-tuning of the ancillary ligands. 相似文献

beta-Elimination of the phosphate group on phosphoserine and phosphothreonine residues and addition of an alkyldithiol is a useful tool for analysis of the phosphorylation states of proteins and peptides. We have explored the influence of several conditions on the efficiency of this PO(4)(3-) elimination reaction upon addition of propanedithiol. In addition to the described influence of different bases, the solvent composition was also found to have a major effect on the yield of the reaction. In particular, an increase in the percentage of DMSO enhances the conversion rate, whereas a higher amount of protic polar solvents, such as water or isopropanol, induces the opposite effect. We have also developed a protocol for enrichment of the modified peptides, which is based on solid-phase covalent capture/release with a dithiopyridino-resin. The procedure for beta-elimination and isolation of phosphorylated peptides by solid-phase capture/release was developed with commercially available alpha-casein. Enriched peptide fragments were characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometric analysis before and after alkylation with iodoacetamide, which allowed rapid confirmation of the purposely introduced thiol moiety. Sensitivity studies, carried out in order to determine the detection limit, demonstrated that samples could be detected even in the low picomolar range by mass spectrometry. The developed solid-phase enrichment procedure based on reversible covalent binding of the modified peptides is more effective and significantly simpler than methods based on the interaction between biotin and avidin, which require additional steps such as tagging the modified peptides and work-up of the samples prior to the affinity capture step. 相似文献

Pyrolysis products with mass of up to 850 Da were detected by direct pyrolysis mass spectrometric (DPMS) analysis of a series of copoly(arylene ether sulfone)s (PES-PPO) synthesized by nucleophilic condensation of either 4,4′-dichlorodiphenylsulfone (CDPS) or 4,4′-bis-(4-chlorophenyl sulfonyl) biphenyl (long chain dichloride, LCDC) with different molar ratios of hydroquinone (HQ) or dihydroxydiphenylsulfone (HDPS). Pyrolysis products retaining the repeating units of the initial copolymers were formed at temperatures ranging from 420 °C to 470 °C (near the initial decomposition temperature). At temperatures higher than 450 °C were observed products containing biphenyl units, formed by the elimination process of SO2 from diphenyl sulfone bridges. Products having biphenyl and dibenzofuran moieties were detected in the mass spectra recorded at temperatures above 550 °C. These units were formed by loss of hydrogen atom from diphenyl ether bridges. Although the EI (18 eV) mass spectra of the pyrolysis products of the samples investigated were very similar, it was found that the relative intensity of some ions reflects the molar composition of the copolymers analysed. Cyclic and linear oligomers with very low molecular mass, present in the crude copolymers, were also detected by DPMS. Thermogravimetric analysis also showed their excellent thermal stability below 400 °C. It indicates that the copolymers yield a char residue of 40-45% at 800 °C, which increases with the PPO mole fraction in the samples. 相似文献

Phenyl acetic acid, a metabolite of 2-phenyl ethylamine, acts as a neuromodulator in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway stimulating the release of dopamine. The evaluation of phenyl acetic acid concentration in the biological fluid reflects phenyl ethylamine levels thus allowing the assessment of the modulatory role of this endogenous substance. Changes in biological fluids levels of 2-phenylethylamine and/or in its metabolite have been reported in affective disorders, such as depression and schizophrenia. Recently, the occurrence of the "attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome" has been frequently reported in childhood population and involvement of dopaminergic dysfunction in this disease has been suspected. A fast, reliable and reproducible method for the determination of phenyl acetic acid in human blood, is therefore needed in order to have a screening tool for monitoring both healthy childhood population and suspected "attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome" patients. The gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric method here described makes use of a deuterated internal standard in order to overcome problems related to the lack of reproducibility often encountered when a derivatization step is performed. 相似文献
