An explosion point space without the fixed point property

In 1988 A. Gutek proved that there exist one-point connectifications of hereditarily disconnected spaces that do not have the fixed point property. We improve on this result by constructing a one-point connectification of a totally disconnected space without the fixed point property.     

Joint production of ϕ mesons andπ ±,π 0,p,\bar p,K s 0 andK ± in hadronic interactions

The joint production of ? mesons andπ ^±,π ⁰,p, \(\bar p\) ,K _s ⁰ andK ^± is investigated using a sample of 600,000 inclusive ? meson events obtained in hadron Be interactions with incidentπ ^±,p, \(\bar p\) andK ^± beams. Evidence is presented for the joint production of ? mesons and strange particles produced with non-strange incident beams. With incidentK ^± beam the number of additional strange particles is suppressed. The results are found to be in agreement with the qualitative predictions of a parton fusion model. The comparison with the Lund model for lowp _T processes is fair.     

The structures and formation of [C4H6N]+ ions 2—ion structures derived from 2-methylpropanenitrile

The loss of a hydrogen atom from ionized 2-methylpropanenitrile is preceded by a drastic rearrangement of the molecular ion. The result of this fragmentation is the generation of two stable structurally different [C₄H₆N]⁺ ions, formed via different pathways. Their structures can be established by a careful comparison of the metastable ion spectra, collision activation spectra, and charge stripping spectra from the compound and its three deuterium labeled analogues and from [C₄H₆N]⁺ ions generated from reference compounds via electron impact ionization or in selected ion/molecule reactions.     

Calculation of the information content of retrieval procedures applied to mass spectral data bases

A procedure has been developed for estimating the information content of retrieval systems with binary-coded mass spectra, as well as mass spectra coded by other methods, from the statistical properties of a reference file. For a reference file, binary-coded with a threshold of 1% of the intensity of the base peak, this results typically in an estimated information content of about 50 bits for 200 selected $\text{m}\text{z}$ values. It is shown that, because of errors occurring in the binary-coded spectra, the actual information content is only about 12 bits. This explains the poor performance observed for retrieval systems with binary-coded mass spectra.     

InclusiveK *0(890) and\bar K*^0 (890) production on beryllium byK − and π− at 175 GeV

The reactions \(K^ - Be \to {}^(\bar K^) *^0 (890)X,\pi ^ - Be \to {}^(\bar K^) *^0 (890)X\) , have been studied in a 175 GeV unseparated hadron beam in the kinematic range 0<x _F <1.0 andp _T ² <5 GeV². Integrated cross-sections and the dependence of the cross-sections on the longitudinal and transverse momentum are presented, together with quark counting rules predictions. The nuclear dependence ofK ^? fragmentation intoK ^*0(890) with respect to Feynmanx is investigated from hydrogen to beryllium.     

Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Di- and Trinuclear Palladium Complexes with PCP-Pincer Ligands

Linear and branched conjugated pincer ligands having Ph₂P groups were synthesized: 3,3',5,5'- tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)diphenylacetylene, 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)diphenyldi- acetylene, 1,3,5-tris[3,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylethynyl]benzene, and hexakis[3,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylethynyl]benzene. Palladation of these ligands by heating with Pd(BF₄)₂(MeCN)₄ in boiling acetonitrile gave the corresponding di- and trinuclear ionic pincer palladium complexes. No individual complex was obtained from hexakis[3,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylethynyl]benzene. The ionic com- plexes were converted into the corresponding chloride complexes by treatment with sodium chloride in a mixture of water with methylene chloride. The structure of the ionic palladium complex with 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)diphenylacetylene was established by X-ray analysis. The obtained palladium complexes exhibited a considerable catalytic activity in the Heck reaction of iodobenzene with ethyl acrylate and in the Michael addition of ethyl cyanoacetate with methyl vinyl ketone. The catalytic activity per palladium atom decreases as the number of palladium atoms in the complex increases.     

X-ray small angle scattering of bulk polyethylene

Summary A computor method for slit-height correction is described, in which the experimental X-ray small angle scattering curve is represented by aFourier series. It is particulary applicable to curves showing broad maxima or shoulders, like those of solid polymers.

On-line high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometric characterization of native oligosaccharides from glycoproteins

An on-line high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) method is described for the rapid characterization of any type of oligosaccharide released from glycoproteins. The procedure can be applied without further manipulation to fractions collected from a high-performance anion-exchange chromatography-pulse amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) system commonly used for glycosylation mapping of glycoproteins, or to a pool of oligosaccharides directly released from glycoproteins. The system consists of a porous graphitized high-performance chromatography column (Hypercarb) coupled to a quadrupole time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. Oligosaccharides are eluted from the column with a gradient of ammonium acetate/acetonitrile and directly identified following in-source fragmentation. Some applications of the method are presented, as well as information about the spectra and fragmentation behavior observed for N- and O-linked oligosaccharides released from some recombinant glycoproteins. Low femtomole limits of detection are achieved using proper miniaturization.
