Trees in tournaments

Letf(n) be the smallest integer such that every tournament of orderf(n) contains every oriented tree of ordern. Sumner has just conjectures thatf(n)=2n–2, and F. K. Chung has shown thatf(n)(1+o(1))nlog₂ n. Here we show thatf(n)12n andf(n)(4+o(1))n.     

Some identities for products and degree raising of splines

In this paper it is shown how the algebraic product of two spline functions, each represented in terms of B-splines, can again be represented as a linear combination of suitable B-splines. As a corollary to this result we obtain an explicit representation of a given B-spline function in terms of B-splines of some arbitrary higher degree. This generalizes some known results for raising the degree by one. Recurrence relations for both products and degree raising are established that may be useful for computation.Communicated by Larry L. Schumaker.     

An Ω(n 4/3) lower bound on the randomized complexity of graph properties

We improve King's (n ^5/4) lower bound on the randomized decision tree complexity of monotone graph properties to (n ^4/3). The proof follows Yao's approach and improves it in a different direction from King's. At the heart of the proof are a duality argument combined with a new packing lemma for bipartite graphs.The paper was written while the author was a graduate student at the University of Chicago and was completed at M.I.T. Generalized reinhardt domains

In this paper we investigate a class of Lie group actions on , the so-calledpolar actions, that naturally generalize the standard actions. For a domain invariant under such an action (i.e., a generalized Reinhardt domain) we characterize the invariant plurisubharmonic functions and determine the envelope of holomorphy in geometric terms. For a generalized Reinhardt domain containing the origin of we also compute its automorphism group. Supported in part by NSF Grant 8602020     

Harmonic maps from compact Kähler manifolds to exceptional hyperbolic spaces

It has been conjectured that a lattice in a noncompact group of real rank one, other than SU(1,n), cannot be isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Kähler manifold; moreover, it is known to be true for SO(1,n). In this note it is shown that this conjecture also holds for the case of uniform lattices in F_4(?20), the group of isometries of the Cayley hyperbolic plane. The result is a consequence of a classification theorem for harmonic maps between Kähler and Cayley hyperbolic manifolds.     

Differential calculus on quantized simple lie groups

Differential calculi, generalizations of Woronowicz's four-dimensional calculus on SU _q (2), are introduced for quantized classical simple Lie groups in a constructive way. For this purpose, the approach of Faddeev and his collaborators to quantum groups was used. An equivalence of Woronowicz's enveloping algebra generated by the dual space to the left-invariant differential forms and the corresponding quantized universal enveloping algebra, is obtained for our differential calculi. Real forms for q are also discussed.     

DeWitt-Schwinger expansion for projective and Grassmann spaces

We propose a method of calculating the heat kernel expansion of coset spaces. The five first coefficients of this expansion on symmetric spaces of dimension d8 are obtained.     

Quantum Berezinian and the classical capelli identity

We study a superanalogue of the Yangian of the Lie algebra gl _m . We apply our constructions to invariant theory.     

Linear operators in Clifford algebras

We consider the real vector space structure of the algebra of linear endomorphisms of a finite-dimensional real Clifford algebra (2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). A basis of that space is constructed in terms of the operators M _{eI, eJ} defined by xe _I · x · e _J , where the e _I are the generators of the Clifford algebra and I is a multi-index (3, 7).In particular, it is shown that the family (M _{eI, eJ} ) is exactly a basis in the even case.
