Quasiclassical Trajectory Study of the Reaction of CD4 with O(1D)

Extensive quasiclassical trajectory calculations for the O(¹D)+CD₄ multichannel reaction were carried out on a new global potential energy surface fit by permutationally invariant polynomials. The product branching ratios, translational energy distributions, and angular distributions of OD+CD₃, D+CD₂OD/CD₃O, and D₂+DCOD/D₂CO product channels were calculated and compared with the available experimental results. Good agreement between theory and experiment has been achieved, indicating small isotope effects for the title reaction. The O(¹D)+CD₄ reaction mainly proceeds through the CD₃OD intermediate via the trapped abstraction mechanism, with initial abstraction of the D atom rather than the direct insertion, followed by decomposition of CD₃OD into various products.     

Mesons of the f0 family in processes ππ↦ππ, K¯K up to 2 GeV and the chiral-symmetry breaking

In a combined analysis of the experimental data on the coupled processes ππ↦ππ, KˉK in the channel with I ^G J ^PC = 0⁺0^{+ +}, the various scenarios of these reactions (with different numbers of resonances) are considered. In a model-independent approach, based only on analyticity and unitarity, a resonance is represented by a pole cluster (poles on the Riemann surface) of the definite type that is defined by the state nature. The best scenario contains the resonances f ₀(665) (with properties of the σ-meson), f ₀(980) (with a dominant sˉs component), f ₀(1500) (with a dominant flavour-singlet, e.g., glueball component) and the f ₀(1710) (with a considerable sˉs component). If the f ₀(1370) exists, it has a dominant sˉs component. The coupling constants of the observed states with the considered channels and the ππ and KˉK scattering lengths are obtained. The conclusion on the linear realization of chiral symmetry is drawn. Practical assessment of the suitability of IQC control materials in haemocytometry based on biologic goals

We have assessed short and long-term imprecision goals based on biological variation in haemocytometry through internal quality control (IQC) for the following parameters: white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC) and platelet (Plt) counts, concentration of haemoglobin (Hb) and mean cell volume (MCV). The attainment of short-term imprecision goals in the IQC system with our own and commercial control blood (between-day control) presents problem for MCV, where minimum performance is achievable, the analytical coefficient of variation (CV) being less than three-quarter of the average within-subject variation (CV _I), i.e. CV<0.75 CV _I. For the other four parameters desirable performance (CV<0.50 CV _I) and even optimum performance—CV<0.25 CV _I (for WBC and Hb) is achievable. The long-term desirable imprecision goals (CV _L) based on within- and between-subject variation (CV _G) seem to be too loose. However optimum performance is attainable for all five basic haemocytometry parameters. In the IQC system with retained patient specimens (within-day control), short-term imprecision goals for optimum performance are surpassed for WBC and Hb and desirable performance is achieved for RBC, MCV and Plt.     

Chiral separations on multichannel microfluidic chips

Chiral separations of FITC-labeled basic drugs on multichannel microfluidic chips with LIF detector were investigated. A preliminary screening procedure for seven neutral CDs was performed under optimized conditions for chiral separations of three FITC-labeled drugs (baclofen, norfenefrine, and tocainide) on a mono-channel microfluidic chip. According to the results of screening, FITC-baclofen and FITC-norfenefrine as well as two chiral selectors including gamma-CD and dimethyl-beta-CD (DM-beta-CD) were selected as models to perform chiral separations on a two-channel chip. FITC-baclofen enantiomers were separated completely by gamma-CD in one channel, while resolution of FITC-norfenefrine enantiomers was achieved by DM-beta-CD in the other channel in the same run. Furthermore, the feasibility of using one chiral selector to separate multiple chiral samples was studied on a four-channel chip. These results show that multichannel chip has a potential for chiral high-throughput screening.     

SBS Suppression Using a Multichannel Tunable Laser with Data-Encoding Capability

We demonstrate stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) using a new laser transmitter. The device uses an integrated FM modulator for both SBS suppression and channel tuning, and an integrated AM modulator for data encoding. We measure thresholds of 25 dBm on four separate wavelength division multiplexing channels. The required modulation signal is very small, 95 mVpp, and the residual AM is only 1 %.     

Investigating the coffee flavour in South African Pinotage wine using novel offline olfactometry and comprehensive gas chromatography with time of flight mass spectrometry

Pinotage wine from several South African wine cellars has been produced with a novel coffee flavour. We have investigated this innovative coffee effect using in house developed solventless sampling and fractionating olfactometric techniques, which are unique in their ability to study synergistic aroma effects as opposed to traditional gas chromatography olfactometry (GC-O) which is designed to, ideally, evaluate single eluting compounds in a chromatographic sequence. Sections of the chromatogram, multiple or single peaks, were recaptured on multichannel open tubular silicone rubber (polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)) traps at the end of a GC column. The recaptured fractions were released in a controlled manner for offline olfactory evaluation, and for qualitative analysis using comprehensive gas chromatography coupled to time of flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC–TOFMS) for compound separation and identification, thus permitting correlation of odour with specific compounds. A combination of furfural and 2-furanmethanol was responsible for a roast coffee bean-like odour in coffee style Pinotage wines. This coffee perception is the result of a synergistic effect in which no individual compound was responsible for the characteristic aroma.     

φ-meson photoproduction from nuclei

We study coherent and incoherent φ-meson photoproduction from nuclei. The available data are analyzed in terms of single- and coupled-channel photoproduction. It is found that the data on coherent photoproduction can be well reproduced within a single-channel optical model and show only little room for ω-φ mixing. These data indicate a normal distortion of the φ-meson in nuclei, which is compatible with the results obtained through the vector meson dominance model. The data on incoherent φ-meson photoproduction show an anomalous A-dependence resulting in a very strong φ-meson distortion. These data can be explained by a coupled-channel effect through the dominant contribution from the ω↦φ or the π↦φ transition or, more speculative, through the excitation of a cryptoexotic B _φ-baryon.     

Real-time detection of cofactor availability in genetically modified living Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells — Simultaneous probing of different geno- and phenotypes

This work describes a mediated amperometric method for simultaneous real-time probing of the NAD(P)H availability in two different phenotypes, fermentative and respiratory, of the phosphoglucose isomerase deletion mutant strain of S. cerevisiae, EBY44 [ENY.WA-1A pgi1-1D::URA3], and its parental strain, ENY.WA-1A. The developed method is based on multichannel detection using microelectrode arrays. Its versatility was demonstrated by using four microelectrode arrays for simultaneously monitoring the NAD(P)H availability of both geno- and phenotypes under the influence of two different carbon sources, glucose and fructose, as well as the cytosolic and mitochondrial inhibitor and uncoupler, dicoumarol. The obtained results indicate that the method is capable of accurately and reproducibly (overall relative standard error of mean 3.2%) mapping the real-time responses of the cells with different genotype–phenotype combinations. The ENY.WA cells showed the same response to glucose and fructose when dicoumarol was used; fermentative cells indicated the presence of cytosolic inhibition and respiratory cells a net effect of mitochondrial uncoupling. EBY44 cells showed cytosolic inhibition with the exception of respiratory cells when fructose was used as carbon source.     

Roper resonances in chiral quark models

We derive a method to calculate the multi-channel K -matrix applicable to a broad class of models in which mesons linearly couple to the quark core. The method is used to calculate pion scattering amplitudes in the energy region of low-lying P11 and P33 resonances. A good agreement with experimental data is achieved if in addition to the elastic channel we include the and N ( channels where the -meson models the correlated two-pion decay. We solve the integral equation for the K -matrix in the approximation of separable kernels; it yields a sizable increase of the widths of the (1232) and the N(1440) resonances compared to the bare quark values.
