Novel 4-phenoxy-2-(1-piperazinyl)quinazolines as potent anticonvulsive and antihypoxic agents

A series of 4-phenoxy-2-(1-piperazinyl)quinazolines was synthesized and examined for anticonvulsive and antihypoxic activities. Many of the compounds exhibited potent anticonvulsive activity comparable to that of carbamazepine or phenytoin. Among them, 4-phenoxy-2-(4-propyl-1-piperazinyl)quinazoline (5w) was selected as the most promising candidate antiepileptic drug with few side effects. It seemed that potent anticonvulsive activity was a prerequisite for potent antihypoxic activity.     

Surface plasmon contribution to the image charge in the metal-vacuum interface

In the RPA it is shown that the classical image charge is induced entirely by the surface plasmon and that the volume plasmon contributes nothing when the static test charge is outside the medium.     

The van der Waals interaction energy between a void and a metal surface

The plasmon part of the van der Waals interaction energy between a void and a metal surface is calculated. In the limit of large z₀ (distance between the void and the surface), the interaction energy is shown to be proportional to z^-3₀ and 2 to 5 times larger than the elastic energy for copper.     

Thermo-elastic property of Ca(OH)2 portlandite

An equation of state (EoS) for Ca(OH)₂ portlandite has been obtained through measurements of pressure and temperature dependence of volume by means of in-situ X-ray observation. The bulk modulus and its pressure derivative at zero pressure calculated using third-order Birch-Murnaghan's equation of state is 33.1 GPa and 4.2 at 300 K, respectively. The unit cell parameters and the volumes have been also determined at 573 K and 673 K. Temperature derivatives of the bulk modulus and its pressure derivative have been calculated to be ?0.022 GPa/K and 0.0072 K^?1, respectively. Thermal expansion coefficient of portlandite has been calculated from the EoS. The pressure dependence of entropy has been obtained from the present thermo-elastic parameters.     

Bound states of a photon and optical reflectivity in a monolayer of dielectric spheres

In a monolayer of arrayed macroscopic spheres of dielectric, it is shown that the localized states of photons appear as sharp peaks in the line shape of reflectivity of light. They are confirmed as such by calculating the integrated density of states of photons and the dependence of the reflectivity on the radius of spheres. The condition for their existence and the possibility of their detection are also discussed.     

ESR study of a new electron center in synthetic stishovite, a high-pressure polymorph of silica

A new unidentified electron center in γ-ray-irradiated synthetic stishovite, a high-pressure polymorph of SiO₂, was detected by X-band electron spin resonance. It has an anisotropicg-factor of orthorhombic symmetry,g ₁ = 1.9764,g ₂ = 1.9527 andg ₃ = 1.9370. The signal intensity was saturated at a microwave power of 2 mW. Annealing experiments show that the center was annealed out around 280 K and unstable at room temperature. The center may be ascribed to a titanium electron center on the basis of a relatively largeg-shift and a comparison with the paramagnetic centers in quartz.

Lone pair of heteroatom located at the beta-cis position in alpha,beta-unsaturated acyl and aroyl group 10 metal complexes dramatically facilitated the stoichiometric and catalytic decarbonylation reactions.
