In order to study stress–strain tensors, we consider their representations as pairs of symmetric 3 × 3‐matrices and the space of such pairs of matrices partitioned into equivalence classes corresponding to change of bases. We see that these equivalence classes are differentiable submanifolds; in fact, orbits under the action of a Lie group. We compute their dimension and obtain miniversal deformations. Deformations of nematic layers caused by magnetic field allow determination of the elastic constants of liquid crystal. In
this paper, we simulated numerically the deformations of planar and homeotropic nematic layers. The flexoelectric properties
of the nematic and presence of ions were taken into account. Our aim was to show the influence of flexoelectricity on the
results of the real measurement of the elastic constants k33 and k11. In these simulations, we calculated the optical phase difference ΔΦ between the ordinary and extraordinary rays of light
passing through the layer placed between crossed polarizers as a function of the magnetic field induction B. One of the elastic
constants can be calculated from the magnetic field threshold for deformation. The ratio k33/k11 can be found by means of fitting theoretical ΔΦ(B) dependence to the experimental results. The calculations reveal that the
flexoelectric properties influence the deformations induced by the external magnetic field. In the case of highly pure samples,
this may lead to false results of measurement of the elastic constants ratio k33/k11. This influence can be reduced if the nematic material contains ions of sufficiently high concentration. These results show
that the flexoelectric properties may play an important role, especially in well purified samples. 相似文献

A new method for the specification of initial conditions in the tsunami problem is suggested. The initial elevation of a water
surface is determined from the solution of the three-dimensional problem in the framework of potential theory with account
for both the horizontal and vertical components of the bottom deformations and the distributions of depths in the vicinity
of the source. The tsunamigenic Central Kuril Islands earthquakes in 2006 and 2007 are taken as examples to demonstrate the
efficiency of the new method.

Experimental evidence for length scale effects in plasticity has been provided, e.g., by Fleck et al. (Acta Metall. Mater.
42:475–487, 1994). Results from torsional loadings on copper wires, when appropriately displayed, indicated that, for the
same shear at the outer radius, the normalized torque increased with decreasing specimen radius. Modeling of the constitutive
behavior in the framework of micropolar plasticity is a possibility to account for length scale effects. The present paper
is concerned with this possibility and deals with the theory developed by Grammenoudis and Tsakmakis (Contin. Mech. Thermodyn.
13:325–363, 2001; Int. J. Numer. Methods Eng. 62:1691–1720, 2005; Proc. R. Soc. 461:189–205, 2005). Both isotropic and kinematic
hardening are present in that theory, with isotropic hardening being captured in a unified manner. Here, we discuss isotropic

A method is proposed for constructing a system of constitutive equations of an incompressible medium with nonlinear dissipative
properties with finite deformations. A scheme of the mechanical behavior of a material is used, in which the points are connected
by horizontally aligned elastic, viscous, plastic, and transmission elements. The properties of each element of the scheme
are described with the use of known equations of the nonlinear elasticity theory, the theory of nonlinear viscous fluids,
and the theory of plastic flow of the material under conditions of finite deformations of the medium. The system of constitutive
equations is closed by equations that express the relation between the deformation rate tensor of the material and the deformation
rate tensor of the plastic element. Transmission elements are used to take into account a significant difference between macroscopic
deformations of the material and deformations of elements of the medium at the structural level.
