The Kernel of the Average Sylow Multiplicity Character and the Solvable Radical

Let G be a finite group, and let p ₁,…, p _m be the distinct prime divisors of |G|. Given a sequence 𝒫 =P ₁,…, P _m , where P _i is a Sylow p _i -subgroup of G, and g ∈ G, denote by m _𝒫(g) the number of factorizations g = g ₁…g _m such that g _i  ∈ P _i . Previously, it was shown that the properly normalized average of m _𝒫 over all 𝒫 is a complex character over G termed the Average Sylow Multiplicity Character. The present article identifies the kernel of this character as the subgroup of G consisting of all g ∈ G such that m _𝒫(gx) = m _𝒫(x) for all 𝒫 and all x ∈ G. This result implies a close connection between the kernel and the solvable radical of G.

Given a sequence 𝒫 =P₁,…, P_m, of Sylow p_i-subgroups of G, and g ∈ G, denote by m_𝒫(g) the number of factorizations g = g₁…g_m such that g_i ∈ P_i. The properly normalized average of m_𝒫 over all 𝒫 is a complex character over G whose kernel contains the solvable radical of G [7 Levy , D. ( 2010 ). The present paper characterizes the solvable residual of G in terms of this character.     

Catenarian Numbers

An integer n is called catenarian if, whenever L/K is an n-dimensional field extension, all maximal chains of fields going from K to L have the same length. Catenarian field extensions and catenarian groups are defined analogously. If n is an even positive integer, 6n is non-catenarian. If n ≥ 3 is odd, there exist infinitely many odd primes p such that p ² n is non-catenarian. A finite-dimensional field extension is catenarian iff its maximal separable subextension is. If q < p are odd primes where q divides p ? 1 (resp., q divides p + 1), every (resp., not every) group of order p ² q is catenarian.     

Sylow Products and the Solvable Residual

We study the connection between products of Sylow subgroups of a finite group G and the solvable residual of G. Let Π(𝒫) be a product of Sylow subgroups of G such that each prime divisor of |G| is represented exactly once in Π(𝒫). We prove that there exists a unique normal subgroup N of G which is minimal subject to the requirement Π(𝒫) N = G. Furthermore, N is perfect, and the product of all of these subgroups is the solvable residual of G. We also prove that the solvable residual of G is generated by all elements which arise from non-trivial factorizations of 1 _G in such products of Sylow subgroups.     

Finite groups in which Sylow normalizers have nilpotent Hall supplements

The normalizer of each Sylow subgroup of a finite group G has a nilpotent Hall supplement in G if and only if G is soluble and every tri-primary Hall subgroup H (if exists) of G satisfies either of the following two statements: (i) H has a nilpotent bi-primary Hall subgroup; (ii) Let π(H) = {p, q, r}. Then there exist Sylow p-, q-, r-subgroups H _p , H _q , and H _r of H such that H _q ? N _H (H _p ), H _r ? N _H (H _q ), and H _p ? N _H (H _r ).     

A condition for the solvability of finite groups

A subgroup H is called ?-supplemented in a finite group G, if there exists a subgroup B of G such that G = HB and H ₁ B is a proper subgroup of G for every maximal subgroup H ₁ of H. We investigate the influence of ?-supplementation of Sylow subgroups and obtain a condition for solvability and p-supersolvability of finite groups.
