Rye, triticale, and barley were evaluated as starch feedstock to replace wheat for ethanol production. Preprocessing of grain by abrasion on a Satake mill reduced fiber and increased starch concentrations in feedstock for fermentations. Higher concentrations of starch in flours from preprocessed cereal grains would increase plant throughput by 8–23% since more starch is processed in the same weight of feedstock. Increased concentrations of starch for fermentation resulted in higher concentrations of ethanol in beer. Energy requirements to produce one L of ethanol from preprocessed grains were reduced, the natural gas by 3.5–11.4%, whereas power consumption was reduced by 5.2–15.6%.  相似文献

The possible lattice formation of grains of chosen material in a magnetized current carrying n-type piezoelectric semiconductor plasma has been examined. In addition to the repulsive Coulomb potential, there appears a non-Coulombic oscillatory potential among the highly charged grains due to the strong resonant collective interaction of the grains and the electron-acoustic mode of the host semiconductor giving rise to the possibility of the lattice formation of grains of new materials.  相似文献

A numerical method is described that may be used to determine the propagation characteristics of weakly non‐hydrostatic non‐linear free surface waves over a general, bottom topography. In shallow water of constant undisturbed depth, such waves are equivalent to the familiar cnoidal waves characterized by sharp crests and relatively flat troughs. For a certain range of parameters, these propagate without change of form by virtue of the weakly non‐hydrostatic balance in the vertical momentum equation. Effectively, this counters the tendency for the non‐linearity in a purely hydrostatic theory to lead to a continuously deforming surface wave profile. The realistic representation furnished by cnoidal wave theory of free surface waves in the shallow near‐shore zone has led to its utilization in evaluating their propagation characteristics. Nonetheless, the classic analytical theory is inapplicable to the case of wave propagation over a sloping beach or off‐shore sand bar topography. Under these conditions, a local change in form of the surface wave profile is anticipated before the waves break and knowing this is required in order to evaluate fully the propagation process. The efficacy of the numerical method is first demonstrated by comparing the solution for water of constant depth with the evaluation of the analytical solution expressed in terms of the Jacobian elliptic function cn. The general method described in the paper is then illustrated by experiments to determine the change in profile of weakly non‐hydrostatic non‐linear surface waves propagating over bed forms representative of those found in shallow coastal seas. We review recent experimental and theoretical work on superconductivity in ultrasmall metallic grains, i.e. grains sufficiently small that the conduction electron energy spectrum becomes discrete. The discrete excitation spectrum of an individual grain can be measured by the technique of single‐electron tunneling spectroscopy, and reveals parity effects indicative of pairing correlations in the grain. After introducing the discrete BCS model that has been used to model such grains, we review a phenomenological, grand‐canonical, variational BCS theory describing the paramagnetic breakdown of these pairing correlations with increasing magnetic field. We also review recent canonical theories that have been developed to describe how pairing correlations change during the crossover, with decreasing grain size, from the bulk limit to the limit of few electrons, and compare their results to those obtained using Richardson's exact solution of the discrete BCS model.  相似文献

A photopolymerization process that simultaneously deposits electronically conducting polymer films and incorporates nanophase silver grains within the films, the silver grains having been formed in situ on irradiating cast, photopolymerizable formulations containing silver salts, was developed. Polymer films produced from formulations containing large organic anions were very flexible and strongly adherent to substrates. Polypyrrole films containing silver grains were characterized electronically on measuring their electronic conductivities and electrochemically on recording their cyclic voltammetric profiles. Conductivities were affected by the chemical identity and concentration of components added to photopolymerizable formulations. The best photopolymerized films had a conductivity of the order of 1 S cm−1. Electronically conducting films derived from formulations consisting of a monomer, an electron acceptor/“dopant,” and a photoinitiator were electrochemically active. They possessed long-term stability under extended electrode potential cycling conditions, acceptable charge storage capacity, and the ability to oxidize or reduce redox couples in solution.
